      But Hogwarts teaches both Astronomy and Divination as magical. If any class is teaching whether Scorpios get along with Leos, it’s Divination. I got the impression that Astronomy=physics, Potions=chemistry, and Arithmancy=a combination of geometry and statistics.

      That's how I've always seen it as well. Divination is disrespected by most, especially Hermoine, but Trelawney's predictions are right. Astrology is disrespected by most, but the more you learn about it, the more specific it becomes and the talking points brought up by astrology's detractors fade away.

      I highly doubt anything would really change at least from voldemort. The only change would be Snape would likely not turn against Voldemort assuming he didn't heard it in place of Voldemort. Snape heard the prophecy, told voldemort who then interpreted it to him which caused his change of loyalty. This could have major changes but voldemort goals, motives would have been the same.

    • @rittersportfan
      @rittersportfan 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      @@thomasrovnak312 Actually I never understood why it was so important that Voldemort didn't get the prophecy in the fifth book. I mean - the "damage" was already done and knowing the prophecy wouldn't helped Voldemort finding a way to kill Harry in the end.
      Perhaps Dumbledore just tried to distract Voldemort. If Voldemort focussed on getting the prophecy, he hadn't so much time to persue his other goals.
      But that's not the point in this discussion here. If Voldemort knew the whole prophecy from the beginning, perhaps he would've concluded that attacking Harry (or Neville) - having a power the Dark Lord doesn't know - was always a risk and he would've tried another way to get rid of this threat. Perhaps he would've just kidnapped him to try and find out more about that unknown power?

    I like you explanation of why they teach Astronomy. But I think it is also relevant to note that for thousands of years of human history, students learned their mathematics by studying and calculating the paths and locations of the stars. Arithmatic, geometry, and post Newton, the alchemist that he was, Calculus can all be learned by studying the heavens with Muggle grade telescopes. Wizard Telescopes would likely offer even better views and measurements.

    • @kiriraganna
      @kiriraganna 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      I like this comment! They don't teach math in Hogwarts as a separate subject, but calculating the positions of every celestial being in the sky at any given moment DOES teach you a lot of mathematical rules, plus of course stuff about physics. It isn't like that isn't useful for wizards too, even if they spend most of their time breaking the laws of... well, physics. As a kid I always found it interesting that wizards are just allowed to go around with zero math education, unless you're a Muggleborn, and even then you would stop at fourth grade levels. And sure, Hermione is studying numerology, but it seems to me that that subject doesn't cover geometry or vectors or stuff like that, plus it was an elective course. But astronomy being the equivalent of math would explain a lot. Now we only need a proper substitute for English language lessons lol (or you know, a native tongue lessons in whatever language you speak the best). I guess the study of Magical History comes closest to that.

    The part about Harry and Ron being able to predict the tasks for the tournament is the reason I find it hilarious when people believe in predictions in general!
    They described 3 extremely vague and common events. If Harry had say burned his tongue on some food, first one "proven". If he had lost ANY possession, second one "proven". And a teenager in school is gonna get stabbed in the back by someone they "trust" fairly often.

    How does Firenze know about the Philosopher's Stone? Easy. He is on friendly terms with HAGRID! And being smarter than humans, it takes a lot less time than the golden trio for the centaurs to get clues out of him and to figure it out.
    Why do they need Astronomy? I always presumed it was because certain potions have to be brewed at certain times of the celestial year, some spells/curses only work/ manifest at X time of the month, *werewolves * for example. And so on...

    Perhaps he doesn´t know? Perhaps he only knows about a mighty artifact, which could lead Voldemort to be alive again and extend his life expatation? And since he´s not dumb he only concludes that it must be the stone?

    Astronomy is defined (by Muggles) as : the study of objects and matter outside the earth's atmosphere and of their physical and chemical properties. Astrology is defined as
    : the divination of the supposed influences of the stars and planets on human affairs and terrestrial events by their positions and aspects. I would argue that what we are seeing in the Wizarding World is a weird combination of both, but would define it as Astrology, rather than Astronomy. Any Astrophysicist that wishes to advance their career will never mention how any planet/stars/etc. make you moody, or unlucky.

My reasoning is that a snakes lower jaw is split in the middle, which allows the mouth to stretch, while the basilisk had a fused lower jawbone, the teeth are different than a venomous snake who has two fangs on top and bottom and even a constrictor has two sets of teeth the basilisk had one set of teeth and is venomous, the basilisk had ear holes while a snakes ears are covered under it's scaly skin, a legless lizard's scales are uniform all around the body as does the basilisk not a snake who has wider scales on its belly allowing it to climb, swim and most importantly slither around without injuring itself, a snake eats large prey whole but the basilisk would need to eat a small giant every other week and most certainly did not have access to that kind of food ever, hagrid would notice animals that big going missing, and a snake doesn't blink or have eyelids instead having a clear scale called a spectacle or eye cap, but the basilisk did have eyelids. It also could be a Wyrm, a legless wingless dragon, but I don't have enough info on wyrms in the Harry Potter universe.

    Man, I've been theorizing about the Harry Potter stuff for over a decade now, have read all the books multiple times, etc... Most of the times SCB upload a new video with a new theory I kinda already know where they're going with it, but this one takes the cake. I never linked the stuff that went on in the forest in book one with what ended up happening in book seven. Hats off, well done guys, I'm impressed.

    Fun fact: Wizardry originally referred specifically to the practice of astrological magic. Wizards would pick astrologically auspicious times for the casting of certain spells, or making talismans to "store" magic at good times to cast spells during bad times. Unlike witchcraft, wizardry was usually legal and considered a part of medicine. Paracelsus and St. Albert the Great were both wizards. "Astrological days" even spread to folk magic to this day: Love spells on fridays, money spells on thursdays, healing on wednesdays, curses on saturdays, etc.

    I was under the impression that astronomy would be mandatory for potions as well-like how the Polyjuice potion must be brewed for a month, and like one of the ingredients needs to be picked at night during a full moon or something. And I would hazard a guess that certain spells might be affected by the planets or space too. Can you imagine if there was a day when something like Accio or Point Me spell would be extra effective? Or at certain hours of the day? I imagine that’s what arithomancy is for too, learning how to augment magic based on the math of magic.
    But besides this…I would like to see a “what-if” theory video about if Firenze did not save Harry(or basically, if Voldemort had successfully killed Harry), thus removing Harry as a Horcrux first.

    Are we not even gonna mention the Unicorn in the forest as part of the first innocents to be killed? Or even that it would have been in the stars as well if this part of the theory is correct...

    • @user-xm5ry2ld1j
      @user-xm5ry2ld1j 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I’m not going to stop thinking about how the whole ‘mistake’ the centaurs make in their timing is because they assumed the innocent life of a unicorn was just as important as the innocent life of a human insofar as it would be written in the stars….and of course they would, being half-horses themselves.

    Regarding the list of innocents who were killed in the lead-up to the second wizarding war, I would have to say it’s a bit of a stretch to call Barty Crouch Senior innocent, considering that he willingly, albeit probably unknowingly, sent Sirius Black to prison for a crime he didn’t actually commit thereby making Sirius a bit more innocent than Crouch, in comparison.

    • @jessicabaum9370
      @jessicabaum9370 28 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I would argue Barty Crouch Senior is partially responsible for Voldemort's return. Voldemort relied very heavily on Barty Crouch Junior who would not have joined up with the death-eaters had he had a better relationship with his own father. His intense loyalty to Voldemort stems from seeing him as a father figure who would give him the attention and affirmation that he was desperate for. While I am sure Voldemort would have returned at some point without the help of Barty Crouch Junior, the timing and circumstances would probably have been different.

    What you neglect to point out is the importance of knowing the alignment big the planets. Why? Apparition.😮
    Apparition is the magical ability to instantaneous move from one point to another in time & space. A person is literally moving into a different dimension then returning at a chosen destination; sometimes miles/kms away. And if not done exactly right, on could return with pieces of the body missing or not at all.

    The stone was definitely moved from Gringotts to Hogwarts, but whether it was done "secretly" is debatable. It was Hagrid who was tasked with its transportation. The same Hagrid who was tricked into telling a total stranger how to get past Fluffy and later revealed the same "secret" to 3 first-year students. The centaurs (and Firenze in particular) are neither strangers to him, nor young students. They certainly could have gotten that piece of information from their stargazing, but there is a much more down-to-earth explanation: Hagrid simply spilled the beans.
    Astronomy also seeps into other disciplines in the books. Granted, it's mostly the lunar cycle we read the most about, but it's not a big stretch to apply it on other planetary movements. The notorious connection between full moon and lycanthropy, preparation of certain potions, best time to harvest certain herbs etc. Understanding of astronomy seems to be needed in a lot of other subjects, even if it has limited practical application on its own.

    The idea that the future is written in the stars also interestingly makes the Cursed Child and Pottermore articles about time-changing Time-Turners much more problematic than they already were. If the future is written in the stars and your Time-Turner isn't changing the stars, it shouldn't be able to contradict what the stars are foretelling. (Unless it's a self-correcting universe sort of model where a change to time will ultimately be "erased" by various actions that will set the universe back on its initial path even if it takes some time to get there.)
