  • In this video, Brian Flechsig at Mad River Outfitters breaks down three common fly fishing questions he always sees, 1) how do I calculate the size of my leader, 2) how do I properly practice fly casting with a leader and 3) how do I match my fly to my rod.

Brian, you are so good! Ive been casting flyrods for 64 year. The men that got me started simply said do this or do that an I learned by makng mistakes. Seems newbies today want ti be told how to do everything. Your patience is wonderful. I practiced on the water. I tried diffent size leaders and tippets with differt size flies. I read books like Ray Beegman's Trout and others. Your advise is always well thought out. Just sayin

Good words about practicing fly casting. Last year, in preparation for a trip to Canada going after Northern Pike, I tied up a large hook with lots of maribou for air resistance, weighted it with lead to simulate the streamers I was going to use, and then cut the hook end off, leaving just the weighted shank. I tied that on to my leader and practiced with it out in the front yard. Of course, I live in the country, so I wasn't worried about looking like a dern fool.

Out of the 40k plus emails I’ve got in my inbox, Brian replying to me last July when my son cut the line in the ceiling fan is the best one. I love watching these videos and YES Brian himself responds! I re read that email in his voice from time to time. 😂😂😂

And that last portion of the vid. Fiberglass or graphite. Slow action verses fast action rods. Side cast or over the head cast. I have a 7 foot fenwick fiber glass streamer fly rod, and through practice and experimentation I have learned not to cast overhead. Had to get hooked in the back a few times on that experiment 😂😂

Thanks for the first portion of the video. That's pretty much what I do. And I make my own leaders as well. Saves money and room.😁😁

Great content as always Brian. I can attest to the fact that every e-mail gets answered. I have never sent an e-mail, and not gotten response, and I've sent plenty of them. So if y'all have a question, e-mail MRO, and you will get an informative answer. 4 thumbs up to MRO and all of their staff.

I swear there is someone lightly snoring in the background through the middle of this video... At first I thought it was someone's cell phone buzzing... HAHAHAHAHAHA

thank you for the video I watched it mostly for the fly size to rod size part but I did watch the whole video> even thou you did try to answering the fly size to rod size question I am left in the same place but it does make more sense mostly because I got this one old spey style fly 1/0 and well I cast it on my 4wt 8wt single hander and my spey rod and then I got this other fly intruder style 2 station 45mm shank 2/0 stinger and XL lead eyes and well I dont think ill ever try to cast that with a single handed rod even my 8wt spey rod 475 skagit head its unruly for me. Small dry flys the 4wt is my choose

I’ve been fishing for 14 years, I’m of the opinion that once you learn the basics and have a few years of experience you’re allowed to break the rules to suit your needs 🥸
