As much as I like to support local guys, I owe y’all a purchase from all the info you’ve blessed us with. Can’t wait to call you dudes when I’m ready to buy a new rod.
Well done. Keep putting these out in this level of detail. This is important stuff to know to take flyfishing beyond the beginner level. Good decision to keep Euro leaders out of this discussion. I think that is a whole different conversation. I'll have to go back through your videos and find some good formulas for dry and nymph leaders.
It seems like what’s most important, in terms of gear, for fly fishing depends on what your goals are. If your goal is to catch fish, Brian’s points ring very true. If your goal is to show off your expensive stuff on Instagram, well... It’s different.
Leaders and knots are my special interest point in fly fishing. Thanks for doing these videos, I have learned so much from your channel. MRO is the only place from which I get my fly fishing gear.
Brilliant videos. It's all about the detail when you're starting or returning to fly fishing. Thank you Mr Flechsig, your staff and the expert friends like Flip and Kelly for all your advice.
That is perfect! That IS the critical information required! You split it up perfectly by type of fishing and explained the leader action required very clearly . Instantly this pulled together several areas that I had partial understanding of and closed the gaps in understanding up so that I now know what to do, how to do it, and why I am doing it. It really is very simple .THANK YOU!!!!!
I'm glad you get into the technical aspects of fly fishing. It's not all rocket science, but there are many factors, depending on so many things. I have spent many years and a lot of money doing things wrong, dealing with frustrations, and almost gave up Fly Fishing a few times because of bad information. You hit the nail on the head with this video, and until everyone learns how to get to your target, and present to your target properly, unfortunately you will probably be frustrated. I change my leader and set up, sometimes a few different ways within 100 feet on the same river. It's all about conditions, and how I need to get to my target. Figure out easy systems on the river to help change out quick, but also saying that, don't get frustrated. River therapy is part of the experience. When changing things up, take it all in. Don't forget to look up. It's an amazing hobby/sport. Thanks for all you do Brian, we need more like you in the business.
Thanks, I got it ! Now it is clear thanks to the metaphors and drawings. I'm going to start working on the nail knots and get some contact leaders, some 4x leaders. I've been catching fish with my cross water 5 wt 9 ' rod and 5x tapered leader, but I need the knows, since I am a beginner. I thank my lucky stars, that I became very good at spin casting and bait casting, before attempting to learn this. I kept wondering about the tippet and I still wonder how the old timers did it. I caught the video on ditch the welded loop and it made a lot of sense to me too. I appreciate this lesson and hope to do some shopping with you all in the future.
I was trying to explain this to a fishing buddy the other day but couldn't do it as eloquently as you did in this video. Thanks for posting this! I definitely will share it with him.
I started tying my own leaders and it took out another spot where I felt like I didn’t really know what I was doing. Sure there’s lots of great options out there to just buy a leader and call it a day, but I’ve been into fly fishing just about a year now and I can’t really feel comfortable with something unless I’ve dug in and learned as much as possible. Tying leaders added one more piece to the puzzle for me.
Thanks for watching! Feel free to contact Brian directly if any questions whatsoever. He's always happy to help and of course.....LOVES to talk leaders!
The was the most well thought out leader video out there. Thanks man! Really helped me understand this and the reasons behind my streamer casting issues, still new to flyfishing with a lot to learn but your videos have been a huge help. 🤙🏽
In my view, leaders are the actual part of the fly line system that delivers the fly at the end of the cast. Yet, of the components (rod, reel, fly line, leader) of the casting process it seems leaders are the least understood. Your videos have been my go to for information regarding the use of the leader and has greatly improved my casting and fish catching abilities. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
YOU are my leader. No, I'm joking, and I haven't yet had time to start fly fishing, even though I cheat and use fly and bobber. BUT I learn so much from you and really enjoy watching your videos. An autumnal thank you from Norway!
This is the video I have been searching for! Thank you for clarifying leaders. I have been making some huge mistakes on the water going from dries, to nymphs, to streamers and never changing or adjusting my leaders. Game changing information. Thank you!!!
Me too, and now I understand why I struggled so badly tossing streamers. I did mostly high stick nymphing in the Red River, Cimmaron, or Pecos, then occasionally tossed streamers into the Rio Grande. Somehow, I had a lot of success, but I just couldn't sort out how to get the streamer to lay down right. Thanks for the videos!

Again invaluable tutorial Brian 🙏🤝 What I would add more, in fly fishing with a double handed rod for salmon, leader in most cases is more important than the fly. And in any spey casting with either SH or DH rod, leader is the most critical piece of the rig, period.

Thanks for watching. Please note that he did not at all suggest a taper isn't necessary. It most certainly is. Leader = Butt (taper) + Tippet. Feel free to e-mail him or call him if any questions.
@@Madriveroutfitters I thought I figured it out lmao, I guess I'm still over thinking it. When it comes to dry flys and small jig streamers I understand but throwing heavy flys and big streamers I'm slightly lost. I think where I'm going wrong is trying to use pre tapered leaders with the tippet being too thin. I measured some 20 pound mono and it sits around .016" I guess I should float it down from 20lb, 15lb, then 10lb for the taper. I'm probably best just to email him huh 🤣

Really appreciate your discussion, it makes great sense. I'm curious about building wire leaders for saltwater barracuda or fresh water northerns or muskies. On less toothy fish, what is a shock tippet and how is incorporated in the leader? Apologies if I missed this discussion in another video.
I agree mostly with the "double tippet " thing. If you understand the taper of the tapered leader you can continue the taper from a 2x to a 3x or 4x or whatever. Its a good idea to know how to do this if you find yourself in a situation where you dont have the right leader and you want a longer lower diameter leader for spooky fish. Or maybe you find yourself nymphing unexpectedly. There are a number of different situations where you might want manipulate a ready made tapered leader actually. It would be nice to have a ready made for every situation, but it doesn't always work out that way. Which after watching the whole video you covered perfectly in the last few minutes haha

I really appreciate all the time and knowledge you share with the fly fishing community. For those of us "novice anglers" every bit of info you share I eye opening. After watching this video, I referenced one of the videos you shared about the basics of leaders hoping to answer a question that came to mind. When you discussed 3 different types of leaders (contact, non-contact nymph and non-contact dry), you mention where you want the leader to flex to allow the proper presentation of the fly. My question is how do you build leaders, for dry flies more specifically, that allow that "limpness" immediately from the transition from the fly line to the butt of the leader? Is it simply "building" your own tapered leader using multiple sections of material? I greatly appreciate any insight on this. Thanks in advance! (I'm also looking forward to your book coming out!)
Tks Brian. U explained leaders excellently. I made alot of leader mistakes due 2 misinformation. I know better and I didn't but high $ rod n reel! Lol. Keep up the good videos.
What do you do to change over quickly from nymph to dry leaders when you're using a nail knot to enhance the energy turn over when casting instead of the standard molded leader loops?

When you discussed 3 different types of leaders (contact, non-contact nymph and non-contact dry), you mention where you want the leader to flex to allow the proper presentation of the fly.
My question is how do you build leaders, for dry flies more specifically, that allow that "limpness" immediately from the transition from the fly line to the butt of the leader? Is it simply "building" your own tapered leader using multiple sections of material?
I greatly appreciate any insight on this. Thanks in advance! (I'm also looking forward to your book coming out!)

Another great one!
Thanks for being here.
What do you do to change over quickly from nymph to dry leaders when you're using a nail knot to enhance the energy turn over when casting instead of the standard molded leader loops?
Feel free to contact Brian directly with your questions but here are two videos that should help: th-cam.com/video/8QKCXstJw30/w-d-xo.html
