They're called 'Perfect Handle' screwdrivers - Stanley also made them.

This is not one of the 'perfect screwdrivers', but is instead a WWII Jeep repair kit screwdriver. You can tell by the diamond cross section of the stem. It was the most stolen thing from Jeeps by GI's in WWII it was so handy and sturdy.

In America we call those gunsmith screw drivers, but you are probably not allowed to do that without getting demonetized.
This is an Irwin Auger Bit Company product. Manufactured by many companies after its 1903 patent by W.S. Ward. Irwin supplied them to the army as well as the puplic and if my research is right this model was issued to armored vehicle mechanics and included in armored vehicle toolkits.
Produced for about 80 years, an expert might know how old this one is.
Should be good for another 100 years or so. Well done it's always worth sticking with it.

We all have those moments Paul, I was putting the last section of headliner in the van and as it pushed into the trim the vinyl covering peeled back and it was ruined! It was the end of a long hot day and I saw red and started attacking it with what ever tool was nearest to me. When I had calmed down it looked like the door scene from that film "The Shining". Good news is you carried on and it now looks the business 👍🏼😃

You could have used brass pins, should have been soft enough to mushroom over without splitting wood.
That's not what they used? I think they should have countersunk the holes so the pins had someplace to mushroom into.

We used rivets that were peened over then sanded smooth.

That's really great. With a screwdriver like that you must be hoping to come across a well painted in slotted screw so you can give it a good bang and not worry.
Your small sander (like a little clothes iron) looks much like my B&Q Sand Critter. I was told some years ago that you couldn't get replacement papers for them so I have tended not to use it. Funnily enough I unearthed it this morning, found a packet with about four 120 grit papers in it - and gave it to my wife who has a couple of doors to sand. Where do you get new sandpaper from?
Thanks Stephen as for the small sanding discs I get mine from screwfix or wilkos they are a little oversize but if that's a problem just trim them up cheers buddy
I think it looks better with the screws in it rather than the pins you started with. They look like they belong, I love it. Thanks for sharing!!!
Plus you can tighten them if need be

Not sure if IAB is a subsidiary or maybe a model but I believe those screwdrivers were made by Irwin tool Co. Glad the Chicago screws worked out for you! In the future if you want to peen over a rod like that, heating it up first will help and also, if possible, peen over one side before you put it into the work piece. Great job!!

The handle pins didn't need to be mushroomed at all. I make knives using solid steel pins and they are simply epoxied in place and are then sanded flush with the wood. That would be a much better looking way to finish them. I just purchased one of these screwdrivers and will be doing a complete "better than new" restoration to it with exotic wood and mosaic pins. I'll publish it on my new TH-cam channel soon. I am also doing custom work on old axes/hatchets, hand planes, knives and other quality vintage tools to bring them back to life. All will have upgraded components and be better than they left their respective factories.
