I'm just struck by the fact that when I see these tools I know my dad, uncle, or grandfather had these exact tools and used them all the time. It's just so great to see not only are they still around but they still can be made to function. I just enjoy watching you bring these things back to life.
Would love to see a video about cin'ti tool co. I have a bar clamp and a spokeshave from them. Both are very high quality tools, so i wonder why they are not still around

I'd be interested in seeing a video on how to make up replacement "swivel plates" on a lathe and just how you fit them back onto the swivel ball. I find many C Clamps that are missing the swivel plate so I don't buy them, which is a shame as some are otherwise in fantastic condition and of a high quality brand.
I know you can buy pads but idk if you can get the exact style. I just know that because I ran across another guys video that replaced one but his replacement was a different style. I’m sure someone put there sells them.
Love these Cincinnati clamps and grab them when ever I can, nice aspect to the wing Nut ends is it's very difficult to Over Tighten or abuse, IMO I think that's why a lot are still around in decent shape, nice and straight. Personally like a well oiled rust patina but a few show queens look nice in the shop.
Hello Alger! You are exactly right! I wanted to point that out in the video but forgot, that wingnut was a built in torque limiter! Even the later clamps with the sliding bars were only about 3 inches to limit torque but as you know people find a way to really crank on them! 😃. Thanks much! 😃👍
I have one. I cleaned it up and can see it’s a circle h Cincinnati tool 4” and has a loopy kind of design like these in the video. It has a makers mark or 3 dots. Any one have a idea of the production dates? I can’t find and info. Can you get swivel pads?

Hi Jay! Great Question! Unfortunately anything with iron will eventually rust if not protected. After you remove all the rust you could keep them coated heavily with oil but if the location is damp they will eventually rust. Another coating you could apply is shellac or clear-coat! That way they look unpainted but are still protected. Sometimes I find these clamps that are so coated in grease and oil that they look like they are bare steel but it’s just years of “patina”. I got a C clamp for cheap and used vinegar to get rid of the rust. I taped it up and used Rustoleum hammered gold paint. Looks good and works great. Thanks for all the helpful tips!
Real nice job there with the clamps. I got a bunch of clamps from a school for free as they were all missing the tips. I wonder where I could get new ones? I don't have a lathe, so that's not an option for me.

Mr Scout Crafter , another good vid. ! I recently purchased 3 C clamps almost exactly the same as you've restored here . One of them, the screw appears straight , but the c is out half an inch on aligning with the screw head . You mentioned in this vid. its not fun or easy to re-align . Man you would love the things I found in my grandfathers old toolboxes. My mom was about to throw the stuff out because you know it it’s just old rusty mix match stuff. So I dug through it and I’m not done but so far I found a old Super Ratchet,old mini hand drill, a really cool indexable adjustable wrench,a old c clamp with the batwing turn handle but needs a pad,a breaker bar that will accept a extension into the end of the handle to make it longer,a old snap-on extension and plenty of other odds and ends.
I love learning the little tid bits of info you give. I have been using C clamps for years and never thought to drop a lil grease into the cup end. Ill never not wanna do it to every C clamp i see now. Lol.
It only took me 57 years! :) I'm 60 now and the shop is so comfortable that my wife knows she can't send me to "the dog house" because I'd be like "cool" see you in a week. (ha ha)
Hi Scoutcrafter. I'm getting to starting paint on the royersford very soon. It's got this very hard, black primer from the factory that really doesn't want to come off and I don't really want to remove it anyway. I don't intend to prime it, I'm wondering if I should put some of this on to etch that layer a bit? I'm planning to brush paint with enamel.
Hello Metal Butcher! This chemical is made mostly for bare metals and it doesn't say anything about painted surfaces on the jug. If the primer is in good shape I would just lightly sand (320grit) any shiny or questionable areas, then wipe down the entire surface with denatured alcohol or acetone to make sure it is super clean... Brushed on enamel sticks to just about anything and lasts a long time! One of my viewers told me about this product called Penetrol (Flood) he said it works great! I want to try it! Look it up on google and read the label! Helps with adhesion and brush marks!!! It looks great because the reviews on Amazon were amazing!

Great restoration! You mentioned that you wiped it with mineral spirits after doing the etching. What does wiping with mineral spirits do? Do you use the etcher chemical on all old steel tool restorations as you did here? I just picked up an old rusty clamp at an estate sale yesterday and will restore it. I absolutely love old, quality built tools.
I like to try different things on different tools to see how it works. On these clamps I was using oil base enamel paint, I have found that if you wipe down the part with mineral sprits it tends to let the paint flow a little better and give a really nice appearance to the paint. Thanks!

Oiling the clamps especially the screws will inhibit the stickson of welding splatter.
Wire brush away …. But I believe it’s a mistake to paint!! … stop erasing history

Any idea how to remove a swivel foot on a c clamp?
Some people secure the pad while backing off on the threaded shaft pulling the ball out of the socket!

Would the prep and etch take off concrete? Just picked up a Cin tool company 10in clamp. Similar to yours. But has concrete on it.
I just saw a video where the guy had to take off concrete from a clamp, he chipped most of it away! Worse then paint! LOL
@@ScoutCrafter 2 1/2 days soaking in white vinegar dissolved the concrete. Pretty excited.

I wonder how good one of those would look if you did hot brassing on the body of the clamp. If I find one somewhere I think I'm gonna try that.
