When my dad passed away we were handed a flag in one of the triangular
cases. He was a WWII Navy veteran.
When my mother passed we buried them both together.
The VFW honor guard wanted that flag to present to me and my brother at the grave site. After the presentation the commander came up to me and inserted three casings from the rifle salute. One for honor, one for service, and one for loyalty. He also inserted the U.S. Navy prayer in the folds of the flag. He made a comment about all the marker flags fluttering in the wind. He said the wind isn't making the flags move, it was the last breath of the dead, welcoming one more soul.

Found the first thing with which we disagree! the f clamps are far superior to the quick grip clamps! at least.... in woodworking. I haven't had a lot of work to use them in my tool restorations...
Love the work, keep it up!

I received the flag from my father’s funeral (Korean War vet) and built a flag case for it. Best woodworking

    "Usually I do colors"
However, in the true spirit of Henry Ford referring to his early models. Para phrasing Mr. Ford: "There IS a color choice. It's black."
Great presentation as always. I am working on one now. Soaked the pin for a month. Still will not budge. Guess I will follow your lead and cut it out. We found this wrench at our friends farm in the milk house. That is where it will return to upon restoration completion.👍🌞 Moo

Thanks for buying that beautiful flag and saving it. The colors were gorgeous. The Ford auto wrench turned out great, enjoyed the video. Glad that the wrench was a-Ford-able, only a dollar, well worth it after you restored it.

The bar clamps, like your little one, are not as easy to use for sure. They need two hands and a helper to set.
I have a bunch of the blue HF bar clamps with the stacked washer clutch, because they are nice for glue ups. I do the dry assembly then layout the clamps on another bench.
The Irwin Quick Grips are indeed the best. They just don't have the reach of the bar clamps.
For giant reach jobs pipe clamps are cool because you can thread together lengths of pipe as far as you want. Ryan and I used them to pull a 20 foot barn wall straight when we sided it.
You can never have too many clamps. 😁😎

Lewie McNeely is still being held in YT Shadow Ban Jail. No apparent reason other than they won't help.
He commented on this vid but it is hidden. 😡🤬
He said, "I ended up with 4 Irwins. the regular size and some longer. if it needs longer the pipes come out, or chains, or maybe the splitter, rough castings work the best..."
That's all I can see because the notifications are always cut off.
That is lame that a subscriber who isn't blocked, hasn't had a strike, doesn't cuss, or call anyone names, and is a gentleman at all times is blocked from doing something he obviously enjoys doing.

I have some of those cheap short clamps I bought from our local dollar store. They're not bad once you make one improvement: I grind/file the notches in the back of the main bar. They need to be deeper. This gives them plenty of grip and makes the clamp a champ!

Rest in Peace to our Fallen Heroes. I picked up 2 of the visegrip clamps at a garage sale for $1 each. They had rusty bars so the lady said they were only good for parts. Some penetrating fluid and I forgot about them for a couple of months. Needed one so I did a quick wire wheel and they work like new. Quality Tools!!

My auto wrench is used to loosen the wire brush from a 4” right angle grinder. The narrow profile fits between the brush base and the grinder motor. If you thought your wrench was badly pitted, you do not want to see mine. It had laid on New Jersey sand for years as the adjuster for the lawn sprinkler system. Yours looks great!

It's always a good day when Scoutcrafter tackles an old auto wrench. Great video. I like these old wrenches too because they are relatively cheap and are nice artifacts from our early auto age. As a result I have a number of them. Ford script wrenches cost more and to pay $1 is a good deal. Your restoration is great without going over the top. In my experience, the thumb wheel pins are the most tedious part of one of these restorations. Even a wrench with a screw in pin is no guarantee of a hassle free resto. Thanks

My wife and I both really enjoy vintage circus paraphernalia, with a particular focus on the side show / freak show. We have collected all kinds of ephemera from this world. One year on her birthday, I bought my wife the ultimate gift, an original eight sheet Otis lithograph print. These were typically printed on newsprint quality paper, it is very rare for them to last. This one was from 1938, and had been carefully attached to archival linen to prolong its life. You probably already know this, but an eight sheet is the largest size poster from back in the day. It is about 9 and 1/2 ft tall and about 7 ft wide. The funny part of the story is that I did not think to measure our walls prior to purchase. There was no where in the house where it could be hung. That birthday gift sat in a tube for 7 years until we moved. The day that we moved in, the first job was figuring out where to hang this damn thing. The new house had lofted ceilings, we figured there would be hundreds of possible locations. It's a big house too, there are only two spots in the entire house where it is possible to hang, and one of them would hide some very exotic wood paneling. So yeah, measure before you buy. It was easily our most expensive piece to date at the time.

I remember seeing "Freaks" (1932) for the first time as a youngster and not appreciating just how well done that movie was. I am sure you and your wife have seen it... =D I had a friend who collected vintage large Bicycle posters from the golden age.. Amazing artwork.

@@ScoutCrafter I have definitely seen it, I own it. It is getting a new audience of appreciation lately. What got us into it was a coffee table book about circus freaks published by a photographer. Just these incredibly sharp images of people living the sideshow life. It's kind of fascinating the ways that profoundly disabled people found their own niche in society where they could earn a living with dignity. In different ways, freaks have found that way to make a living all over the world in similar ways. We learned about a town in Florida where pretty much all old circus people go to die and visited, fascinating group of people. Some of the best and most random stories I've ever heard I heard there. If you enjoy fiction at all, I cannot recommend the book "Geek Love" more highly.

I have a 9-inch auto wrench (cleaned but not restored) which is very useful in plumbing applications. Lightweight and small, but with 2.5-inch jaws. Works great for P-trap type nuts, couplers and valve stem nuts where little torque is needed.

  • @13thworker45

John another nice save. As far as the adjustable bar clamp goes, you need to make bigger handles for them. I have used them for over 50 years. With the bigger handle you can tighten them so much the bars bend or they start to pull out from the head. The plastic ones grip , but not enough for me. I’ll stay with my old clamps, most are older then me. Thank You

Those F style clamp handles can be improved greatly by wrapping the handles with the tape that hockey players use to wrap their hockey sticks. It feels much better in your hand and gives you a much better grip if you want to add a lot of pressure when using the clamp.

Nice job on the autowrench, as usual. Looks terrific now.
I have some of the small Bessey clamps. Handy for small items, but the moveable jaw slips often.
I love the Vise Grip one handed clamps. I have several of different lengths.
Vise Grip was purchased by Irwin, who was purchased by Newell who sold Irwin to Stanley Black and Decker, so now DeWalt and Vise Grip are the same parent.

I cannot agree more about the quick grip clamps. I always pick them up at car boot sales and with the largest ones now £42 ($50) in the big box stores they are a bargain if someone is asking £5 for them, particularly if the are the older style. I like the one handed clamps based on the same principle as the silicon sealant guns as well which are often only a £1 a piece. Can never have too many clamps 😁.

I just prefer old style clamps over the quick clamps... They have much, much bigger clamping power and tend to be much stronger.... You can be welding next to them without any risk of damaging or melt them....
But I like only older clamps with strong spindle on them... These new clams are so week that if you apply to much pressure they will bend...

I've used my auto wrench on occasion. When you're faced with a huge nut often your only choice is a pipe wrench or an auto wrench (unless you have a collection of giant open end wrenches).

Those Ford wrenches are are actually monkey wrenches, considered obsolete now, replaced by the crescent wrench. I like them better because even though they are smaller than my biggest crescent wrench they will open much wider and I can use them when I have no other wrench that will work. I actually have two of them. . . . one for Metric and the other for SAE. Actually I bought one at a swap meet, because I liked the one my dad had, and now I have his too. I have used them for the nut on the spindle holding front wheel bearings, getting drain pipes loose under sinks, and earlier this year needed it to install a pole that tightens up between the ceiling and floor so my wife can grab it to get into the shower easier. That was probably the biggest I've used it for, probably at least 2 inches wide.

Thank you so much for this video!
This is the EXACT wrench I have that was my grandfather's. I've been procrastinating restoring it, for fear of messing it up. Now I have a how-to video! 😁
One question, I assume you had to tap the wrench to accommodate the threaded pin you made, correct?
Also, now I know what that weird tip is for.
Hope I can do half as well as you did.
    Thanks again!

If I recall correctly the square end on the handle denotes 1926-1927 model T Ford. I have a few of these in my collection. Yours looks better than factory. These were always painted black.

I'm sure you've been asked a thousand times but what do you use for grinding the metal to remove the pitting? On the grinder? Do you have a video that shows more details? Thanks for teaching me so much. 👍

Yes- my favorite tool for pit removal is a 4” angle grinder with a 36 grit flap disc! 😃👍

Hey SC. How about doing some brass compasses you used in the scouts or military? Pls.
That old auto wrench sure came out good. Also was VERY a- Ford- able tool for your use.
I still have some use for those types of wrench. My stepfather wouldn't let me use his good tools. So I did my bicycle & other repairs with those wrenches, different pliers, different knife multitools, etc. Got my own tools when I got a job & own car. I keep some of those types of auto wrench by My utility shutoff. You need a haircut, fella.

I couldn't agree with you more regarding those f clamps that have to can't over to lock. Absolutely hate those. The quick grip ones are fantastic particularly when you have to mount something by yourself, but they are garbage when it comes to metal on metal clamping. They shift all over the place and cannot get very tight. I did think it was worth mentioning that despite the design being similar, the heavy duty f clamps that harbor freight sells now, you also see them very often with fixture tables, those are a whole other animal. While they do require the moving arm to cant, they lock up very solidly and they are fantastic for metal on metal, you can really crank them down, and they have a sort of thrust bearing on the clamp cup so it does not spin as you are tightening at all. I know that almost all of them are designed to spin, but my experience is that once they have sufficient force on them, there is too much friction and they cannot spin, causing the work to misalign. I think they are one of the few items from HF that are consistently great tools.
