Had my R estate 6 weeks now. Just back from a 300 mile trip around the west coast of Scotland with 2 adults, 2 older kids and a full to the gunnels boot load of stuff!! It's all the car you'll ever need I think. Okay, if money was no object then an RS4 or 6 might be the natural choice but in the real world the R estate is hard to beat. I came from a BMW M140i (which I really liked) but the golf is the better car in my opinion 👍
I'm currently in a similar predicament I have a 3 door M140i and I'm seriously considering one of these purely for the fact that it isn't the hatchback that you see everywhere.
Oh another note, the paddles are 5 minutes to swap with aluminum ones, there's a pin you pull out and straight swap. No need for nasty stick on ones. I got a pair from eBay for £20 and they're a perfect fit, solid and a massive improvement
I had the Wolfsburg edition of this. Also got the APR Stage 1 tune and it was a f*cking rocket ship! It’s was hand down the best cheap all round car you could buy. Faster than an RS3 with a bigger boot for 3/4 the price.
My labrador loves launch control - I know because of the noise he lets out when you drop the hammer. keeper car - what a package. Cracking r/v. Bought mine s/h and put 20k miles on in 16months, seen 41mpg on a slow A-road run and can't think of better all round package. Only gripe is I couldn't fine a s/h car with DCC spec. New sub :-)
Great review, must take mine out up there, roads look brilliant! Totally agree about the useable power, something that is often overlooked in the modern chase for massive horsepower
I’ve owned (leased) the R Estate for the last 3 months, just clocked 5777Km. So far I have really enjoyed the driving experience. One reviewer described the car as a wolf in sheep's clothing! It sure is,. noone expects the car to take off at the speed that it does. I hope it continues to perform.
i have had mine for like 3 months now and i love the drive and it's great for a family car and for power when you need it ! i don't think i would change it for a very long time to be fair it has everything i need it drives like a normal car and it has the power and the space it's such a great car ! also when i turn round and look back at it i'm over the moon with it for sure :)
Great passion! Completely agree that the estate is the better car. Although just px my GTi for the T-Roc R as no 7:5 R estates available in estate from my dealer. 2 weeks in and it’s amazing!
In the summer of 2017, while on vacation in Sweden, on a B road, as you say, a Golf R Estate goes wailing by, passing me, just giving it the beans-so cool; sadly, I’ll never get to own one in the 🇺🇸 Nice review.
Couldnt agree more. Bang for your bucks is amazing. I had a c43 estate before and although i prefer the merc engine/sound everything else i prefer on the R. Perfect understated family wagon.
Absolutely agree with what you said. Sometimes more HP doesn’t equals to fun. The power you can rev out and enjoy is most important. I was between a used RS3 and this, but after many 2L TSI, I went with the RS3. Lovely car, awesome exhaust, but I might choice R wagon if I have to do it again. Just married and looking to have a baby next year. LOL

So much more practical when you have kids (or dogs). I've been on the look out for one of these or a cupra st for a good while, just cant get the golf r estate in Ireland so I opted for the cupra st. And I am totally pleased with the cupra as it has it all, power (when on your own) and practicality in a all rounder. The golf is probably a bit more polished and maybe a nicer package all round but you save a fair few quid on the cupra so I'm overly happy with my choice. Either way if you need the room and also want to blow all most anything off the road these are the cars to go for.
Great review ! Always liked performance Golfs, had a few over the years. Wish i kept my H reg ( 1990 ) Gti 16v in red. Loved that car... Now drive a Bmw 530d estate. Acceleration a bit slower than the R as heavier but in gear acceleration once moving is very impressive as is 45 mpg avg...in eco pro on a longer run will actually give 52 mpg...
Considering characterless junk like a brand new 3 series diesel or A5 diesel would cost more than a 2-3 year old golf R it's a no brainer. I currently have a 150HP Polo (which isn't exactly slow, but not fast either) but mulling over one of these as a next car. Problem is I think once the buzz wears off you're basically just paying for occasional overtaking power, I can't even remember the last time I really hammered my current car because the roads nowadays just don't lend themselves to it, and a golf R is significantly quicker still.
Your American belizean brother across the pond would die for a Golf R Estate. I plan to transform my Golf Alltrack into an R estate with the help of RacingLine.
I'm well late on the comments for this feed. But many thanks for a great review. I was always a Lexus driver, and swore I would never go European. But my needs changed, so I went for a 70 plate (demo) R Estate. Not really had chance to get out in it (damm covid) but when I do oh man. Don't think I will do Brecon, More likely the NorthYorkshire moors. Even treated myself to a nice plate for it. Thanks again.
The best all round car, pound for pound, on the market. There simply isn’t another car in the world that offers the blend of performance, value, affordable running costs, usability, practicality and spec. Slap a stage 1 map on it for £700 and you’ve got a sub-4 second 0-60 in an estate car that will still get 40mpg on a run for under 20k second hand.
Great review and now eagerly awaiting arrival of my new 69 plate R estate. Managed to convince my wife it was a sensible family car. Out of interest where did you get your boot liner as will need one for the dog?
