I'd agree and say a high spec 7.5 estate in Lapis Blue and Silver Pretorias is probably the best an everyday golf can be....ticks every box.... Apart from the all-important one. The one your TCR ticks. That thing is just special!
maybe I should just buy a dedicated track car and get keep the Estate but I just don't have the inclination to own a car that sits around for most of the time.
Great video, I’m surprised at your comments about the estate being the best golf 7.5. It’s too heavy, the rear doesn’t look good and it’s not a hot hatch which to me is what the R and Gti stand for. If you want an estate buy a GTD.
But the GTD is just as dull to look at and slower. The fact you can chase sports cars in such a plain and practical car is what makes the R wagon stand out. Estates are boring but fast estates are very cool and sub 5 secs to 60 it’s certainly not slow.
Totally disagree. When Volkswagen launched the R Estate this was a great move by them. Same could be said about the Leon Curpa ST Estate and hatch. For someone like me who has a family with kids I need the practicality of an Estate but I also want something to give me a spirited drive and have the punch when I need it. The Golf R Estate ticks all those boxes for me. I don't have enough money in my sky rocket for a 2nd car so I needed a car that could put a smile on my face but also keep the wife happy and take us on family holidays each year. I'm also too old for being challenged at the lights every time I go out for a drive. The Estate doesn't attract that kind of attention thankfully! I love my R Estate.
Nobody wants an estate....they need an estate. And maybe when they do have a golf estate they might want a 310ps 4.6sec 0.60 rather than a boring diesel estate that sounds like shit and revs to 4.5k with only 200ps (only guessing). Of course anyone without that NEED would go for the hatch, no shit. Completely missing the point there
Thanks Malcolm! I can't wait to see, I've had some pics sent to me but unlike most cars I buy new, I know it's not going to look at its best until some bits get changed....
Just wondered if you can tell me if it’s a straight swap between golf mk7 r seats and mk7.5 seats please? I’m guessing the physical fitment is the same it’s more the wiring plugs I’m concerned about. Any help would be great thanks!
I’ve noticed with the estate r they ain’t many around with a high end spec. Valid point with how often would you actually require the extra space. Did have my heart set on a late 18/19 golf r but looking at pcp prices on the mk8 r I’d be tempted to spend that but extra.
One thing is for sure, the mk7.5 is the last of them to still be somewhat analogue. From the mk8 forward it's all about interfacing with software to interpret and perform an action or have a sensation.
I prefer a classy sleeper also. '15 SE Sportwagon, white with full tint. Yakima roof rack on rails, which I've carried couches on..lol. Go camping with 21ft cargo box. Amber driving as on TH-cam, hi beams, amber rear turns by pulling out red plastic seen on TH-cam. Would like all LED lights but money going to fixer house. :) Love it still at 67k miles. Mine is 6sp auto non dsg which has been great. Best mpg is 39 on road trip. I didn't want the diesel which had dsg. Cheers and i dislike alot about the Mk8. Mk7 rules!
I have to agree with Tim... Having come nearly to the end of my term with this 7.5 I had a look at the 8. It's OK but not as good so I have decided to keep it longer than planned which is not like me. I think though if I had a 7 it would have been an easier decision. Great car the 7.5 gti and so far the best I have had...
Such a lovely car Andrew and I hope it finds a good home i love the look of the R estate and was impressed when I drove one when I was buying my 8 admittedly it was a GT and the luggage space but I wanted a manual and the estate was a run out one with DSG they couldn’t get a manual Had the R been a manual would love one just prefer them to DSG but I guess in future with electric cars will have to have auto! Great video again Andrew keep safe
I see your point about 4x4, my A3 Quattro is pretty pointless most of the year. Great review as always, would love a Golf R Estate or Cupra Estate which is significantly cheaper. GTD Estate no good as I’m moving away from diesel. Good luck with the sale, someone’s getting a great car!
I get AWD but TCR with a VAQ diff and some good tyres is pretty good at putting the power down. You do get used to just being able to floor it in all conditions with AWD and that is quite amazing really but modern TC systems are quite good at helping out rather than just cutting the power as they used to.
your a3 quatro is same thing as 4wd on golfs, passats etc, it's haldex dif clutch (which by no means a bad thing). real full mechanical quatro is really not in use any more, even in top modern audis.
That's the way Haldex has been for years and why the only rear efficiency penalty is the weight rather than the mechanical drag of a full time AWD system. Gen 5 haldex constantly pre-charges so it's ready for action almost immediately.
Nice review good to have some good content to watch on TV these days. Thank God someone agrees with me about the mark 8 Center console. There is just something missing in that area and it lets down the car I think. Good to hear you’re keeping the TCR as I really enjoy the content hope to see it in future as we foe out of lock down 👍🤞
Thanks Francis. Drove TCR today, loved it. It’s going to have a tough job justifying its place in my garage as of tomorrow but I honestly don’t know how it will work out. For all their brilliance I’m a bit bored of Mk7 7.5 and ready for a change
Another excellent video - I've commented this before, but I think the R makes more sense as an estate than a hatch. I'm biased, of course, as I have one myself 🤣. I wouldn't have bought an R hatch - I'd have probably gone for a GTi PP hatch, but I particularly wanted the estate - missed the space when I traded in my old Passat B6 estate for the GTD. I bought an R Estate a few months before you (20 plate) to replace my Mk 7 GTD hatch. With the spec I was after too (Dynaudio, Pan roof, DCC & 19" Spielberg). It's every car I could ever want or need - indeed, I'm seriously considering paying the balloon payment & keeping it at the end of the PCP! Re your comments on the suspension/wheels - I find the 19" wheels to be noticeably quieter than the same size on my GTD (19" Santiago). Probably down to the tyres (Continental on the R, Pirelli on the GTD) - incidentally, my Wife has a new A3 Edition 1 with 19" wheels & Pirelli Pzero tyres - I find then pretty noisy ( much more so than the Golf R). Re the interior - I don't use my phone in the car (apart from creating a WiFi hotspot for CarNet) & I have no interest in music streaming (old skool🤣), so I hate that part of the Mk8 ( and new A3) - I'm probably one of the few Mk 7.5 owners that uses the CD player in the glovebox (although not that much). I don't like my Wife's A3 (apart from the seats & ambient lighting) & think she actually prefers my Golf too - guess we're just too long in the tooth for the tech🤣🤣.
On my 3rd Golf R, 2 hatches & currently a 7.5 estate. Have enjoyed them all. Wasn’t 100% about going for the estate at the time (now coming up to 3 yrs with it) but have absolutely loved it. Slight handling comprises vs the hatch, but in every other aspect has suited my needs & been a pleasure to drive everyday. The most complete Q car I’ve had. Having said all that currently pricing a mk8 clubsport v a m135i as a replacement, or do I wait for the mk8 estate? Decision, decisions.
Thanks Andrew! Post lockdown I thought I'll buy the car I really want and that's what I did (TCR). Leon was sold in July, great car for the money but lack of multi-link rear suspension really bugged me
@@volkswizard I remember you mentioning the suspension and why it was a bit cheaper than the golf. Looking forward to some videos on the TCR, great car.
A cracking car for some lucky owner. I totally get the wolf in sheep’s clothing, under the radar, appeal. Look forward to content with the new addition to the fleet to come Andrew. Hope you’re keeping safe and well.
Great video, look forward to your new car soon, so just wandering what you are doing with those pretoria wheels as i have a 70 plate golf r estate in indium grey?
Also meant to add that I totally agree that the LED headlights are far superior to the Bi Xenon lights in the Mk7. Quite an obvious & dramatic upgrade! Wasn't aware about the auto dimming/non dazzle function though - I did notice the small "a" in the full beam icon on the dash when I first drove at night, but was still manually dipping the headlights (d'oh 🤣) - must try it again!
@@volkswizard must try it - I didn't entirely trust it! I've not had the chance to go for a long run in the R estate since I bought it (apart from once last August), so haven't rely done much driving on unlit roads in the dark
Absolutely the right decision Andrew. The R wagon is a fine car but for me at least not one that you'd turn around and look at as you're walking away whereas I'd park my TCR in the lounge if I could :-) That coupled with the fact that you are very unlikely to see another TCR on the road, even less so with the *correct* number of doors, in which I take childish pleasure even though to 99.9% of people it's just another white VW Golf.
Good car but the Cupra ST looks much smarter imo. Also the interior rattles I had on my Golf R were ridiculous. Would be interested in your opinion on VW interior rattles.
I should have said this car was built at Zwickau being an estate, not Wolfburg where the hatches are made and it had a distinct feel of high quality and was totally rattle free, while my WOB built TCR rattles from the back seats.
Not had any rattles with either of my Wolfsburg built Golfs a very early mk8 one of the first 250 uk built cars and my precious 7.5 If you want a rattle prone car my Vauxhall Astra was terrible
@@Birmingham_racing nearly 400hp and 600lb ft of torque in gear it'll beat most things and manage 40mpg all day long, best I've seen in my R was 32mpg so Gtd is the winner for me.
Can you comment please on the suspension. I would love one of these cars and your review was great, thanks, but will it be comfortable enough for her for shopping trips etc?
I think the Golf, it's cheaper, better on fuel, probably not much slower, cheaper to run as it's just a Golf, lighter, smaller. And I like the way it looks like nothing special, S4 will look a bit bling however it's specced (though still quite stealthy for the performance I guess).
@@waynewilliams5434 the Audi was better if driving normally. In 8th at 65ish it would be doing about 1600rpm just cruising using very little fuel, would regularly see 40 mpg. If you booted it you would use loads though! Usually see about 33ish mpg under normal driving in the Golf
Cost! Some bright spark at VW decided GTI/GTD/R Estate buyers should just put up with the stock rear lights when hatch owners didn't have to. Probably same person who said it was OK to have a fake tailpipe each side on Mk7 R Estate
@@dweatherley Shape of the estate tail lights is different to the hatch - so no off the shelf upgrade. At least the R estate tail lights are a darker shade than other estate models.
I think you've made 1 mistake. It isn't 10% heavier than the hatch. I think it's only 80kg more. As for fuel economy, my 7.5R Estate got more fuel efficient with a few more miles, and in Eco (with PedalBox+) then I can easily top 40mpg. And the pre-OPF farts a lot between gear changes.
@@MattCSLnut Sitting at 70mph on a m'way i tend to get 43mpg (indicated). What I normally get in day to day driving I couldn't tell you. Tend not to bother looking at that!!!

@@volkswizard You're probably the one who is right then. I was only going on journos like Evo who always said it was only 80kg. I've looked in my manual, and in typical VW fashion it says "additional figures were not available at time of publication". TBH the weights seem to differ on every website you go to. CAR reviewed the 7R and said about the diff between hatch and estate "VW says there’s around 70kg extra over the rear axle". But whatever, I'm not sure the weight difference is a big factor. Certainly not when I bought mine, given the extra practicality.
Apologies if anyone asked already, but how many days a year do you do track days? How many days of bad road conditions per year Andrew? I think the GTI is just closer to your heart!
2020 wasn't a good year for doing much for so I did one track morning. Funnily enough I was grateful for AWD on just one morning too but, as my video on Goodyear all season tyres proved, a front wheel drive car on some winter/all season tyres is perfectly capable, much more so than an AWD car on summer tyres. However AWD offers peace of mind all winter round as if the snow is really bad you may need AWD and winter tyres. Let's see how much track time I get in 2021 and go from there :)
Tricky, not sure if R is faster in the dry but it feels easier. You can get on gas sooner on corner exit too but it is heavier. I think lighter TCR just edges it in dry on road and definitely on track when the lack of weight will help even more

Its all about compromise mate. If you have no need for estate, great...take the lighter better looking car. If you need a SUPERIOR boot, take the estate. Simple.
We shall see. It was the car I wanted to just keep and keep and keep but TH-cam doesn't like that, it wants new s**t all the time. I'll only sell it if I find a house I want and £25k ish will make all the difference, otherwise it's going nowhere.
@@willpark7483 it does matter since awd is cheaper to make and 4wd is the real thing and more exphensive and usually a better feeling (but you can get a haldex controller if you feel like havin actual 50/50) awd in golf r is more fuel efficient than a 4wd like the torsen tho . True but there are still many decent owners who like it’s unusual combination of attributes but they don’t make the news. The Estate largely avoids that unfortunate stereotype
I disagree. But estates serve a purpose and possibly there has to be a compromise as you are fitting in more practicality, maybe at the expense of styling. But I think there are some good looking estates and there are ugly hatchbacks. Each to their own.
So since you drive your cars like you stole them , the few miles this BRAND NEW ENGINE car has ever had were very hard for it . I know most new cars come with engines pre broken in but still . Id not buy one like this .
Really? I ran it in carefully while on winter tyres, I did an oil change at just over 1000 miles after running in and most of the miles have been done commuting is at 70 mph on the motorway chasing decent mpg. I also warm it up carefully. I don't think an average of 30mpg points to paticularly hard use. The roads have been too slippery to enjoy driving this car until the day I made this video!
Errrmm ... this particular R Wagon already had a precautionary "running in" oil & filter change @ 1000 miles and it's driven in the manner it was designed for. These EA888 engines are very strong and super reliable especially if looked after over and above what VW recommend. I'd happily buy this particular one if I didn't already have my own "baby" estate version MK7.5 3 door Golf R
@@mikemayers9353 ... I'm only referring to the MK7 onwards EA888, especially the ones that are religiously looked after from New. It's the same nonsense that kills so many BMW "M" engines. It's not the bottom end shells that are the problem but the 15K miles apart engine oil intervals and a lack of warm up & down sequences, especially on engines that rev beyond 8000 RPM.

maybe I should just buy a dedicated track car and get keep the Estate but I just don't have the inclination to own a car that sits around for most of the time.
He's trying to sell it 🙄
@@mikerogers7983 totally agree with everything you said. I have two kids and an r estate. Does it all.
Completely missing the point there
Great video Andrew such a nice car and a great buy for its stealthy competence- can’t wait to see the new car also :)
Thanks Malcolm! I can't wait to see, I've had some pics sent to me but unlike most cars I buy new, I know it's not going to look at its best until some bits get changed....

Picking my mk7.5 2019 golf r estate up next week can’t wait after watching this
You will love it sir!
@@volkswizard Second that!
Pulled the trigger on one got a 19 plate one same spec, pick it up next week
@@anthonywood9632 how is it?
One thing is for sure, the mk7.5 is the last of them to still be somewhat analogue. From the mk8 forward it's all about interfacing with software to interpret and perform an action or have a sensation.
I prefer a classy sleeper also.
'15 SE Sportwagon, white with full tint. Yakima roof rack on rails, which I've carried couches on..lol. Go camping with 21ft cargo box. Amber driving as on TH-cam, hi beams, amber rear turns by pulling out red plastic seen on TH-cam.
Would like all LED lights but money going to fixer house. :)
Love it still at 67k miles.
Mine is 6sp auto non dsg which has been great. Best mpg is 39 on road trip. I didn't want the diesel which had dsg.
Cheers and i dislike alot about the Mk8. Mk7 rules!
I’ve got a 7.5 Golf GTD estate and it’s such a good car. I’ll be gutted when I see her go.
Seems like the perfect car. We don't get them in the States...
I still think the interior on mk 7.5 is better than 8, they really have cut down on quality control.
If you watch the new review of Mk8 R from Pistonheads, the reviewer says the dash materials are really good.
Car is ALL in one, if you don't have money for 2 car this car is family car, race, road trip 😀
You got it man!
Great content as always, please keep it coming!
Such a lovely car Andrew and I hope it finds a good home i love the look of the R estate and was impressed when I drove one when I was buying my 8 admittedly it was a GT and the luggage space but I wanted a manual and the estate was a run out one with DSG they couldn’t get a manual
Had the R been a manual would love one just prefer them to DSG but I guess in future with electric cars will have to have auto!
It’s not full time awd, most of the time it’s front wheel drive.
That's the way Haldex has been for years and why the only rear efficiency penalty is the weight rather than the mechanical drag of a full time AWD system. Gen 5 haldex constantly pre-charges so it's ready for action almost immediately.
Can't wait to see the new car!
Not long now Ricky! Must charge my cameras up ready (PS I can't wait either)

Will it still be a VW you Chang to
🤔
Thanks for sharing!
Wish they had that in the states.
One day. Stick with my mk5 2.0 TFSI estate for a while longer.
Good review thanks Andrew. Have I missed something, what happened to your Seat Leon ?
Thanks Andrew! Post lockdown I thought I'll buy the car I really want and that's what I did (TCR). Leon was sold in July, great car for the money but lack of multi-link rear suspension really bugged me
@@volkswizard I remember you mentioning the suspension and why it was a bit cheaper than the golf. Looking forward to some videos on the TCR, great car.
If only they sorted that rear boot and light area out...it would then be perfect.
Great review as always 👍
Thanks 👍
Do the hatchback taillights fit the wagon?
sadly no
A cracking car for some lucky owner. I totally get the wolf in sheep’s clothing, under the radar, appeal. Look forward to content with the new addition to the fleet to come Andrew. Hope you’re keeping safe and well.
Thanks as ever Darren 🙌
Great video, look forward to your new car soon, so just wandering what you are doing with those pretoria wheels as i have a 70 plate golf r estate in indium grey?
The wheels are on my TCR and look even better (sorry!)
@@volkswizard Thanks for reply
Better than the levorg in everything but looks
damn, I wish we had the R estate in the US.
Great video. You should investigate getting a lens hood to cut down on some of the lens flare!
Thanks. The intro was tricky because of the sun but hopefully it got better after that.
That’s the best bit!
@@volkswizard must try it - I didn't entirely trust it! I've not had the chance to go for a long run in the R estate since I bought it (apart from once last August), so haven't rely done much driving on unlit roads in the dark
thought u didnt like the golf r ?
He does he just prefers the tcr
TCR is a better hot hatch, you could say R is a better car, certainly is as an estate.
In 3 door yes not as an estate
I would probably choose the TCR over the R also. Looking forward to seeing what the new car is
Absolutely the right decision Andrew.
You think it looks boring !
That's the life isn't it, buying a new Golf R just incase we get a few flakes of snow. The mans made it.
I can't afford to lose any money on it so I haven't made that much :)
@@volkswizard keep the vids coming, really enjoy your work :)
Good car but the Cupra ST looks much smarter imo. Also the interior rattles I had on my Golf R were ridiculous. Would be interested in your opinion on VW interior rattles.
My 7.5 gti has rattling issues... 🙄
I should have said this car was built at Zwickau being an estate, not Wolfburg where the hatches are made and it had a distinct feel of high quality and was totally rattle free, while my WOB built TCR rattles from the back seats.
@@volkswizard Mine is Mexico built...
Not had any rattles with either of my
Wolfsburg built Golfs a very early mk8 one of the first 250 uk built cars and my precious 7.5
If you want a rattle prone car my Vauxhall Astra was terrible
Very nice Andrew. Personally I think you should keep the Golf R Estate as a 'Company car'.. Stay safe. Respect.
Thanks Paul. New car is the company car so that plan, while good, won't work sadly :(
I'd take the gtd estate as the mpg is better and when mapped it could easily keep up with the R. Plus it's a bit rarer than the R
A mapped gtd is not keeping with an R.
@@jimmyjt16 agree. But also if you equally mapped the r.......
I think an R estate is rarer
You on drugs?
@@Birmingham_racing nearly 400hp and 600lb ft of torque in gear it'll beat most things and manage 40mpg all day long, best I've seen in my R was 32mpg so Gtd is the winner for me.
The Italian accent was a bonus!
Can you comment please on the suspension. I would love one of these cars and your review was great, thanks, but will it be comfortable enough for her for shopping trips etc?
Thanks Rob. On 18s ride quality is good, I think a bit softer than the hatch so doesn't need DCC as much
Would you rather this or a b9 s4?
I think the Golf, it's cheaper, better on fuel, probably not much slower, cheaper to run as it's just a Golf, lighter, smaller. And I like the way it looks like nothing special, S4 will look a bit bling however it's specced (though still quite stealthy for the performance I guess).
I had a B9 S4 before my R wagon. The Golf is better in every way unless you’re in to having more upmarket badging
What is the fuel economy like between the Audi s/rs4 and Golf r ?
@@waynewilliams5434 the Audi was better if driving normally. In 8th at 65ish it would be doing about 1600rpm just cruising using very little fuel, would regularly see 40 mpg. If you booted it you would use loads though! Usually see about 33ish mpg under normal driving in the Golf
Nice video, why is it that the estate Mk7/Mk7.5's don't get the upgraded rear headlights?
Cost! Some bright spark at VW decided GTI/GTD/R Estate buyers should just put up with the stock rear lights when hatch owners didn't have to. Probably same person who said it was OK to have a fake tailpipe each side on Mk7 R Estate
@@volkswizard ahh good to know mate I've always wondered. Shame there wasn't an actual decent reason for it lol!
@@dweatherley Shape of the estate tail lights is different to the hatch - so no off the shelf upgrade. At least the R estate tail lights are a darker shade than other estate models.
Review some Octavia vrs’s you will be surprised
I think you've made 1 mistake. It isn't 10% heavier than the hatch. I think it's only 80kg more. As for fuel economy, my 7.5R Estate got more fuel efficient with a few more miles, and in Eco (with PedalBox+) then I can easily top 40mpg. And the pre-OPF farts a lot between gear changes.
The 7 Speed DSG of the MK7.5 R helps with better fuel economy over the MK7's 6 speed DSG for sure, especially at motorway speeds.
@@MattCSLnut Sitting at 70mph on a m'way i tend to get 43mpg (indicated).
What I normally get in day to day driving I couldn't tell you. Tend not to bother looking at that!!!

@@CM.243 ... that's more than I ever got out of my MK7.5 3 door DSG. I managed to get 40 MPG but it was tedious to do so using ECO mode so I don't bother with it anymore. That said I did average 38 MPG on a long summer hols drive to Italy & back, including some Swiss mountain passes and that was at EURO average speeds of 130 km/h which is about 81 ish ... but we all know 150 km/h ish is the norm ;-)
Let's see how much track time I get in 2021 and go from there :)
best car I've owned 👌
Probbaly not wise to show that you're selling this used car for more than you bought it for brand new
One question.
Which corners better/faster R or GTi/TCR
Tricky, not sure if R is faster in the dry but it feels easier. You can get on gas sooner on corner exit too but it is heavier. I think lighter TCR just edges it in dry on road and definitely on track when the lack of weight will help even more
Yep, certainly a great all-rounder. First review of Mk8 R on Pistonheads looks very promising.....
It's great we are getting a Mk8 R Estate
@@volkswizard yes and will be interesting to see how it compares to the hatch with the stretched platform.... certainly a step up in practicality.
*cries in American*
If I was to buy an r it would be the estate it's all the car you would need and mpg is not exactly horrendous. Would be fun to own until it got nicked
That is the one problem, hence why shit wheels, a coat of dirt and a plain colour make such a difference. It's just those exhausts that give it away.

The Mk8 looks a bit more sporty compared to the Mk7. If find the Mk7 rather plain styling but that’s just my opinion. However, again in my opinion. I feel the Mk8, interior is rather poor for VW standards the lack of physical knobs and dials is rather disappointing
Why can’t we get this in the US?! 😢
Once my Alltrack is out of warranty I'm gonna do some unwise financial spending to change it into a R Estate. And yeah it's a shame the US market always gets shafted on the cool EU wagons
The hatch will always be superior to the wagon
Dynamically yes but wagon is practical and flies under the radar. It's also 100% cooler because of that
Not sure I agree. I’ve had 3 Rs. 1 Mk7 hatch, 1 MK7.5 hatch and a 7.5 wagon. Personally I think the wagon is the better car.
Its all about compromise mate. If you have no need for estate, great...take the lighter better looking car. If you need a SUPERIOR boot, take the estate. Simple.
Yeah don’t sell the tcr! Unless you want to sell it to me 🤣
We shall see. It was the car I wanted to just keep and keep and keep but TH-cam doesn't like that, it wants new s**t all the time. I'll only sell it if I find a house I want and £25k ish will make all the difference, otherwise it's going nowhere.

To ne fair any golf estate is butt ugly
@@MattCSLnut ive had ea888 engines from every gen , they are in no way reliable . Have fun with your car.

I've owned my 2018 MK7.5 R from New and like Andrew I dumped my first oil after 1K miles and I've been changing the engine oil & filter every 5-6K miles instead of the ridiculous 13K miles intervals VW suggest. It's the same nonsense that kills so many BMW "M" engines. It's not the bottom end shells that are the problem but the 15K miles apart engine oil intervals and a lack of warm up & down sequences, especially on engines that rev beyond 8000 RPM.
Stop crying it has warranty and has oil changed at 1k i bet 90% of the R’s around have not had that done.
