Much like you I started with Mario 1 on the nes and I absolutely loved this movie. It's a total love letter to the entire fanbase!

Sorry if you criticize, but thinking about the Super Mario Bros. Movie also makes me think about my currently imaginary characters a lot. I really really really wish they were no longer imaginary. I imagine Mario, Luigi, and the others meeting them. I wish they were mages named Kiemonte, Sunari, Neyla, Xavior, Gerodi, and Jalrez. I will be excited to watch the movie on late April though.
Hope you enjoy it. Write and flesh out your characters, there's a story somewhere waiting to be told!

My first console was an SNES which came with Super Mario World. Me and my younger sister have a lot of hours on that game, and a few of the mario games to come out in the decades after. The film was both good and underperforming in a few places for me. Overall I am pleased with the product I walked out happy I saw it. I do have some thoughts though.
-The need to make the film compact (90 minute run time) caused several scenes to be transitioned pretty terribly, like it was noticeably bad.
-The famous voices was pretty much stupid, except for Bowser Jack Black. He did a darn good job, and his singing justifies his casting for me. Chris Pratt is a weird one, young enough to be around for more products, fan friendly, but critics hate him. Probably came out ahead on him? Princess Peach's Voice actress does a serviceable job, she expresses the voice of a one woman force of nature well, the toads are pretty much worthless. She is their ruler, their shield, AND their sword. The voice worked with her character. Toad's voice was unsettling, until he calls Mario his best friend, and suddenly it just works. This weird overly confident quixotic toad with seemingly no brains or brawns is comin along to be the sidekick he always was. It may sound like I just defended all those voice actors, but honestly? Just about a single class of highschoolers could have fielded a just as acceptable voice actor core. Paying big bucks for names is just weird, and Seth Rogans DK just felt REALLY immature... like his real life fuckheadedness? I always imagined DK as more of the big dumb big brother, willing to fight an entire army for his family and ask why after he's got all the bananas back. This version was a stupid teenager with attitude.... Just didn't like it. And yes I will blame the voice actor for that shit. The dick actor rogan is the real life dufus who never grew up and he is somehow type casted into voicing DK for that reason.
-The overall Plot worked for me. I think we coulda tightened up the human world start, to spend more time in the game world though. Was the security guard asshole needed at all? The travelling the kingdoms to Kong country was nice, but it coulda been shown more as the game world instead of screen shots montage.
-And finally the music....The music they choose was SERVICEABLE, but once those end credits come up and you start hearing the old tunes? The only thing going through my brain is, why the fuck wasn't there MORE of that in actual film?
As I said above it was good. I liked it. It isn't perfect. It didnt need to be. I Disagree with some of the film critique types who wanted it to be a legendary movie to change all movies. It wasnt particularly great, and its still in the top 3ish video game adaptations EVER made. let that sink in. Film companies adapt games so fucking horribly, that this film with all its failings still feels like a triumph. And the box office is showing that. Kid films USED to print money, lets see if that will happen again.

Nice review and analysis. I entirely agree about future Zelda and Metroid movies need to be done differently. I see Zelda as needing a more classic and deeper adventure story of the hero saving the princess because that is truly at the heart of Zelda; it is an RPG, not a side-scroller. And Metroid definitely needs to be more serious and dark, I love Primal as a baseline. Samus could be a true global superstar if done correctly and *not* done like Brie Larson.

Samus is strong beautiful, stoic, and interesting. Brie doesn't have that presence. Young Cate Blanchet could i think

PS I heard that their were multiple scripts written for the film. I don't know if the "original" one was written by Illumination studios, but it was supposedly SO FUCKING BAD that Miyamoto came out to CONTROL the film, which is where that one famous line of him INTINTIALLY forcing a lack of plot into the film.
That's a very good thing. Nintendo cared about this one unlike the earlier Live Action one.
That video linked.... ugh.... that guy is mad because luigi is captured and not peach and because mario got beaten my dk in the trailer. I've seen enoguh videos from people with video titles containing the word "woke" on their videos to know... oh wait, his last video also has the word woke on the title. On the other hand about the mario movie... i enjoyed, its Ok, a solid 6 or 7 out of 10 with its audiovisual department beign the star of the show. About the cast chosen... i dont really mind because i watched it dubbed to my lang
It's okay to have a difference of opinion. Lots of entertainment falls under that category so as long as you see stuff like that, people are gonna be suspicious. IMO Hollywood has lost a lot of goodwill lately and deserve little trust. I'd care less about other youtubers and care about the quality about what is being put out for entertainment from Hollywood.
