''Most cynics are really crushed romantics: they've been hurt, they're sensitive, and their cynicism is a shell that's protecting this tiny, dear part in them that's still alive.'' - Jeff Bridges
I still think this way.. either the worst will happen and I won't be disappointed but instead will be apathetic, or I'll be happier when something good happens instead, no matter how small that good deed was.
me too. then I remember I have despair. when you give into to despair anything and everything is out of reach and boredom seep in. the evasion boredom is our driving force to some exciting and bigger than life. still cynical, still hateful but now untouchable. We can do anything we want without pain because that is what we always expected.
a Cynical is not a mentally ill or low esteem kind of guy. He just understands that all men are weak, products of low cunning, bitterness and envy, so in reality a cynic is a realist who understands that being good is not a virtue , being too trusting can only hurt you and being positive is a safe way to be dissapointed all the time
Aprokind Actually I'm a positive person in order to mitigate disappointment. If something horrible happens at least I'll think of a silver lining. Not being delusional and ignoring the reality of my circumstances, but instead understanding bad things aren't as terrible as they are portrayed.
I started becoming really cynical after noticing my good will and kindness were resulting in my being taken advantage of. I smh at my own cynicism sometimes. I find a lot of things genuinely corny/ungenuine/insincere/fake now. I wish I could go back to my blissful ignorance.
@@alexanderchenf1 Well.. mostly grey, I'd say. You can't really rely on someone or something to be all bad or all good. But when it comes to cynicism vs optimism the middle ground is too thin to stand on.
Maybe youre codependent and never learned good boundaries and how to take care of yourself? Poor personal boundaries leads to doing so much for others (that they never asked you for) and then you left feeling secretly angry and resentful because youre not getting what youre giving. Its especially confusing because you might think being kind is always the best thing, but its not when its overboard and draining you, and preventing others from taking care of themselves if youre always taking care of things preemptively for them. Its fine to be relentlessly kind to people, but we often forget to include the ourselves in that, and especially make yourself the first person youre kind to every day. Lisa Romano has good videos on codependency and boundaries if youre interested. So does Ross Rosenberg.
Achilles Zalman to you, it may seem touching, but this unhealthy cynicism spiralling people down depression is not practiced by the majority. I can confidently say that we feel insulted that our beliefs are shot down in this video as insanity.
FU 2 sigh... because the balloon is a representation of ones happier feelings of pride joy and security. Showing those feelings are based on a lie or shaky information will deflate it. Simple enough? Im done after this one your not even worth my time
My biggest fear is that I will never be given the kindness that others will give to me, as I have given unto them. I fear that I will never be given the compassion that everyone else has been given for a long, long time.
I really don't think compassion is given as often as your comment makes it seem. I believe the more frequent aspect through which we are engaged with is judgement. Everyone experiences it with the most frequency. This doesn't mean "judgment = disapproval". This means that all of our social involvement is transactional. You're accepted and rejected in accordance to what others perceive of you and how that interacts with their own interests. I also think that being on the receiving end of compassion usually means you're being looked down on and it's a temporary treatment. Now, I acknowledge that you aren't as concerned with my observations as much as you care about reciprocity. You'd like to receive kindness in proportion to how much you give it, which sounds reasonable to me. I guess that hasn't materialized for you because most people aren't as perceptive and sensitive as yourself, so you're left with a sense of deficit and it is draining. Is this anywhere in the ball park?
It's true that every cynic isn't recovering from trauma, but I think most of them have had their eyes opened to the real way of the world. That can be pretty traumatic. You make jokes not to put something down but to remind yourself that it's not that serious and you'll be okay if it doesn't work out.
ive become very ill as ive gotten older, and im not even that old. Things havent turned out well for me in any way, but something strange happened. I watched skits from Louis C.K. and other comedians like him. They take the shittiest parts of life and show that in the end, almost everyone has it pretty rough and it really doesnt matter. If you can learn to not address serious issues so seriously, you can find a way to enjoy life even when your struggling to survive. I wonder though if this is a perspective you can only gain after having gone through a lot of trauma. The idea was kinda unknown to me until I accepted the idea that my life may not ever be the way I want it and thats it.
Richard Lane I understand. Sometimes it's nice to know life isn't picking on you and other people are going through similar unpleasant events. For me, anyway
if you're a cynic, you're always self aware about this. If you're not self aware, you're not very cynic, or just really not an intelligent one. No shit, people have issues with themselves, now i know.
I’m a Cynic. I was bullied by people who I thought were my friends all because I was shy, introverted, sheltered and naive. Sure I see the worst of people before the best because of my experience. I’ll never let my guard down or open up to be vulnerable.
@@hdjksa52 But does that make the world better? Does pouting about how the world sucks make it any less suckier? If you want improvement, you need to believe in improvement.
@big-jong-smoke except expecting the worst makes you inherently search for the worst aspects of something, making you unable to enjoy the better aspects of it. So yes, expecting the worst does make you feel worse.
Every very wounded person I know is very cynical, including myself. Otherwise, if you whine and ask for understanding in your suffering, people often run away from you, or end up wounding you even more, because human suffering is very scary. Everybody will joke or complain about this friend that always talks about her tumultuous relationship, the "depressed friend": they are such a pain in the arse, can't they shut up about they life, nobody cares about it right, so we say? But usually, their pain are not even remotely comparable to what the cynics, even though they can seem cocky, provocative, hurtful or even unsensitive and cold : The cynic is persuade that he is a deeply unfonctionnal being, maybe even some sort of monster. They are terrified of intimacy, because it will eventually lead to disappointment, rejection, or worse. You'll have to have ill and insincere intention while getting closer : they're are doing so much effort in order to be repulsive ! Worse, if you like them, it will be unbelievable to them, and they'll be certain they're gonna end up harming you the way some(one/people) did in the past, and they'll loose everything back again. Handling a cynic is hard. But if you manage to make them comfortable so you can get closer with a lot of time, dedication and precotion, you might end up meeting a very intelligent, sensitive, and beautiful being that had ceased to exist for a long time.
I agree but he's going to far its not because we are afraid its because were intelligent. 99% of the world is full of crappy people who are selfish. But we do believe in success please stop with all the extra crap. I hate when people try to shame others. Cynics just are realist point blank period. and yes the system is rigged but that just means we have to find loop holes to take advantage.
@@PATRIOTTTT Yeah the "people" are selfish. Not you though. You're not thinking of yourself at all. You just want the world to be a better place because you're an angel.

@@mohammedhasan4949 Your not wrong. Everyone who perceives themselves as angels/having good character, do so for self interest and conformity. True cynics are selfish like every person on earth they just don’t desire validation for there actions.
As a cynic, I'm just a person who expects to see the worst in others, but I just for once want to be proven wrong, that there is someone that is good. And sadly, that's only a few people that are special to me. My hopes are low, but I want more than anything than to see what is good inside each person.
I doubt it. Humans act on self interest. The only reason they do “good” is because they’re civil. Put them in a burning building and you’ll see how generous and selfless they are. Putting them in what you believe is the most harshest scenarios will show their true colors. Even yourself. Starve them, force them to make tough decisions and you’ll see how “kind “ people are when reduced to their limited options. And when they’re so refined that’s what people truly are
If you expect the worst, you'll find the worst. Nobody is purely "bad" or "good" and if you keep looking for someone's bad traits you'll never be able to admire their good ones.
Totally wrong explanation of what a cynic is. Trauma , through out ones life, is constant and comes in many shapes and forms. The cynic is a person that have observed it and forgets to deceive himself. eg the indifference of those who claim to be good and the conformity of those who have fellowship in evil.He is a person that have been lied to many times, by the world. The cynic is honest. But in a world, where lying to yourself is considered a positive trait, the one who sees the wrongs of humanity is considered as negative person. sry for my english.
@Leon Jan| To be fair, the video seems like a complete misrepresentation of cynicism as a whole so it's hard to compare the video's message with the actual belief
@Leon Jan| My view of cynicism (or at least my way of looking at the world) is a belief that people are motivated to perform actions via their own self interests. For example, when their is some rich celebrity or public figure making a massive donation to a charity, people will see it as an act of kindness whereas I see it as a huge tax deduction on their behalf. Television figures "working for what's right" are really working for their ad revenue. People on the internet complaining of drama and controversy are just seaking attention or moral high ground and normally the starters of said drama are doing the same. These are just a few examples off the top of my head, some can probably be explained better. If this isn't cynicism I don't know what else to put it under.
Must all cynical people have suffered from a childhood trauma? Is it not enough to see people suffer on the news? To see a homeless alcoholic on a park bench?
You are correct, I have never gone through serious trauma and had a happy childhood; generally speakig. Yet I am the biggest cynic I know, maybe because after my 'awakanig' few years back and became somewhat conscious to what our species is doing to itself and how we are orgaizing at large. I have been aware of 'our' system, and how reforcing of certain behaviours that are not in accordece to a posative outcome towards our economic models, the eviromet and to ourselves are self generated by the socio ecoomic system based on scacity where we have now have the means to move to a post-scarcity natural law new paradigm and stop with the slavery. You know?
it said some people. the others might be came from the product of american beauty. a cheerfully comfort-childhood guy who don't know how to kill a rat and finally got bitten by it.
+dante love Hmmm, no. Most of the recent studies about bulling and mobbing showed that bullies are predominantly people with high self esteem. Just no.
This isn't correct, it may be correct for certain (very superficial) examples of cynicists but certainly not all. Most cynicists don't strive to be cynical, in fact they hate to be cynical, but they have a more realist aproach towards choices and how they can impact negatively aswell as positively, the truth is, there almost certainly isn't a 'right' answer to any question, and cynicists understand this, so they don't praise 1 idea, instead considering all ideas and never fully engaging on one. 'The problem with the world is that intelligent people are full of doubts, while the stupid ones are full of confidence', quoting Bukowski, is very fitting here. Most intelligent people are cynical as they are clever enough to see the bad in everything. That does NOT mean they were once traumatised necessarily, I find that a very arbitrary statement.
Cynics hate it (being cynical), but they can't help it because "intelligence", the armor worn to blame the world for their own inability to be vulnerable. Cynics make sure to criticize and hurt others who are in the arena because they are too scared to risk being in the arena themselves. 'Cleverness' to see the bad in everything seems to be a perfect excuse to risk little and never live. If you look for the bad in everything, you will surely find it.
Dennis Flax You depict cynicism as the convenient choice for intelligent people, the easy way out, but the cleverest, most cynical people I've ever known were much harder for themselves than they were for others. You could see in it an insecurity, about everything and oneself. People who criticize other people's opinions and don't engage themselves into thinking about other possibilities are simply put, arrogant and evil. Not cynical. At least that's how I see it.
***** My avatar describes how I see the world. Lets say Im confused and at the same time felt abandoned, an outcast. I wanted to be different, but I am doing what others have been doing. ii want to enter society, but the society kicks me out all the time. I am a little bit different from everyone else but with just a minute variation, I became weird and soon become alienated. I don't know really what Im doing. Im turning into something very empty, that sometimes I feel no remorse and without a sense of pity and sympathy. Inorder to resist the pain society throws at me, I tend to isolate myself and cover my heart with a wall of lies to the point that I start to question who am I. This video made me realize how far I am from being sane - in fact this video showed me how close am I to the point where one becomes a full psychopath. All I want is to live in a normal way, in a way that I want, but the world keeps me pushing to my breaking point.
I overheard my boss calling himself a cynic and I looked up the definition and then got here by googling 'how to please a cynic' god help me I'm doomed.
Proving us wrong is what pleases us. The only problem is most of the time that is difficult to do because cynics usually become the way they are by looking at facts, which often paint a very depressing picture.
@@zivadinajovanovic6439 What mind game? Cynical people usually have had it rough and just expect the worse. I try to kind of keep cynical comments to a minimum, but I know other cynics are quite vocal about their views.
Mila P That was his point. He used to be an idealist but he believes now (did believe that is) that the world is a shit show. Life failed his initial expectations... hence the disappointed idealist.
Cynicism can be a legitimate reaction to becoming educated about history and human choices, but it’s cool to dismiss people as damaged every time they discuss human failures.
i guess it's more like where do you want to go with it, kind of thing, you get to a level and you either focus on the bad or try for the good( and become less cynical )
idk about other people but to me this explanation applies perfectly. I was a relatively normal, happy person. An extremely painful disillusion happened when I was around 20 years old and since then I've been a cynic.
But modern cynics are in fact damaged. Many realists (in the definition of a person who sees the true picture of reality) are misinterpreted as cynics. A realist will say: History will repeat itself, there will be another world war, and racism and sexism will continue forever. But there has been a lot of improvement in today's society. A cynic will say: History will repeat itself, there will be another world war, and racism and sexism will continue forever. There is a lot of so-called 'improvement' but that is just a mask for the selfish to gain what they want. A realist will try to find the silver lining in the clouds. A cynic will try to ignore it.
I am a cynic because of harsh life realities I had to encounter a lot of people would never live in an average life. My cynicism is due to experience, not just ''to troll''.
In my eyes cynicism is just seeing humanity for what it is. I do not understand why being cynical is considered a bad thing. While being a disillusioned idealist that thinks that life is sunshine and rainbows is seen as a good thing. I guess some people can't accept the truth.
@@sorinbuculei103 Like most people you are mistaking cynicism for realism. Realism is seeing humanity for what it is, which means the good and bad. Cynics only see the bad. Cynics are as delusional as idealists. One sees the bad, one sees the good. Both are unhealthy.
Totally disagree. Cynics aren't protecting themselves from disappointment based on some unrelated trauma. They are protecting themselves from disappointment after having an experience where they come to find things aren't what they seem in that specific context and use that information to warn others [in a condescending way sometimes]. I believe most cynics were also or are still also idealists. I see cynicism as a healthy balance to idealism. Although I can only speak for myself. For me the lack of employment past graduation post-recession made me pretty cynical about my education, and with reason. I haven't lost all hope but I see no use in draining myself putting all my energy into something which I known has a low possibility of happening, and I need to utilize my emotional energy efficiently.
Just have them killed seriously they're causing depression and suicide to other people I'm sorry for saying this but they are ruining everything bright into dark.

@@ceftomapothelyamburcsvlafr2734 "Cynics are ruining things because they cause suicide." - in other words, "Cynics are bad because they cause death." "Oh, just have them killed…" Sorry, is something wrong with your brain? I think that maybe… *Maybe…* That defeats the purpose… Y'know…
Im very thankful for this explanation because I purposefully don't read most comment sections because they're filled to the brim with cynicism. It's very frustrating as someone who's generally optimistic to read comments on a beautiful video, words i would never think of saying. It makes sense that most of them are unhealed and hurt. It's like how most anger stems from an underlying fear or dread of something, learning that changed my life as well.
Yes, I think the space between cynics, idealists, optimists and pessimists is a continuum, with varying levels of healthiness and fitness to a particular environment. I don't think there is a hard line in such space that separates "clowns" from "normal" or "healthy" people. I like most of the videos on this channel, but in this one, portraying some people as clowns does not seem very compassionate and empathic. Maybe the author is not really trying to portray all cynics, but some cynics he personally knows, and there would be nothing wrong with that. We are all biased to some degree, and we all have a past.
I don't think you fit the description of cynicism as used in this video. An awareness that people often have dark motives is not proof that it has to be dark.
I think you're thinking of a misanthrope... not a cynic. A true cynic want's his complaints taken seriously and for someone to fix what he sees as broken so he/she can try again.
Robert Tracy A misanthrope specifically hates people. "Mis-" links to hate or dislike, or just a general "not this" feeling, while "anthro" links to humanity, or people. I'd say a cynic believes the bad outcomes are going to happen, while a pessimist thinks that bad outcomes are the most likely to happen. There's nothing in the definition of the word itself that implies anything about their behaviour, or what they want to do about their conclusions. A pessimistic nihilist can say that the world is pointless, and the overall pattern of life is going to be defined by suffering and hardship, then they might immediately start climbing a tree and excitedly noting that they're seeing a squirrel there, which they think is neat.
I consider myself a cynic for the very reasons he explained but I don't try to blame others. My failures are my own and I understand that I am alone and a failure because of choices I made.
Are you a failure in society's eyes or in your own. Being alone doesn't make you a failure. I would be viewed by society as a failure. But I believe in how I live and it is against the norm. I don't believe in proving yourself to others. I believe in proving yourself to yourself. I prefer to think that I am not a failure but enlightened.
This was beautiful, cynicism is beautiful In my opinion. It's a form of correction that life throws at you. I think it's good to have cynical people around to remind the world, your negative influence can take physical form, stare you in the eyes and see through you.
i realized i am cynical to women, because all i ever wanted was to be loved. and what i got is spite. Now i like to see them crumble under my cynicism. They basicly made me into an asshole, that doesn't get pussy, end my misery.
My cynicism is deeply rooted in depression and past failures and disappointments but is far from a defense mechanism from pain. It just makes life even worse because I default to it and can never convince myself to pursue anything that would make me happy because I can only see myself failing. I wish I wasn’t so cynical but I’m stuck here
well yes.... because the investment of emotions and ego that every human has naturally towards their own life is compromised when the concept of mortality is finally grasped... thus either a cynic or some kind of Buddhist is born...
1. I didn’t have any expectations, life is fucked up and that’s all there is to it. 2. It wasn’t a childhood trauma that broke me, it’s adulthood. 3. Not only I am willing to talk about my trauma, I want to talk about it. 4. I AM hoping for kindness! Maybe I’m not a cynical after all.
I think this is a obvious simplistic description of a group of people who are aware of BS... you made it sound like cynics are always wrong in their attitude... I think it's much more complex than u described, but what do I know I'm just a sad cynic
addo1001 think of bill hicks and George carlin. Very cynical but also definitely speaking more down to earth than many comedians of their time and to this day. I would rather be a cynic than an idealist, lost in a dream world.
+Oliver Burke i Just think they (awarely or not) also described sceptics and there's the overall impression left that for eg. everyone who thinks that some TH-camrs did good deeds only for the publicity are automatically cynics. and the argument shifts automatically to their (mine) past issues. then I have to defend or comment on something that is disconnected from the main discourse. I'm not saying there are no cynics nor I'm saying that the video doesn't describe cynics. I'm simply saying there is another side (extension) to this video otherwise this becomes a pretty lose generalization.
Julie P. That's just called giving up. An untested Idealist isn't really an idealist as far as I see it, if they get swept away right away. It isn't about not getting knocked down, it's about how many times you get knocked down and keep getting back up. A true idealist never stays down. But even so, I suppose at least that untested kind of blind idealism is naive. However, I understand now that cynicism that would reject every opportunity is also rather naive as well. So, if you really think there's nothing to idealism, you'd better think again. It would also be a good idea to look at the behaviours of successful people, and see all the times they didn't get there by blind luck. If you really don't believe it, if you really think your right, and your idea is superior, it will stand up to any scrutiny, prove it at least to yourself. Because otherwise, if you don't do diligent research, and I were to know that you didn't, I'd know you were afraid of finding out if it might not be true, no matter how much you'd deny it. And if you thought your beliefs were superior and you didn't need to research it? Well, fine, but just know, ironically, you'd be being idealistic, on the heaviest scale I could ever think of.
I've been called cynical when ive said "I'd rather people live with freedom than people being ruled by an opinion of politicians." How is that cynical? People are going to commit crimes regardless of laws because the one's that do commit crimes do not fear police, courts, jail, or the judge. They must fear their victims.
Nope I'm saying why should the criminals determine my or your freedoms? The only guarantee to keep you safe is yourself. If politicians take that away you are no longer safe or free; and are only given rights chosen by those who decide to be criminals. Therefore the criminals must fear their victim.
I gotta say, this video is kinda condescending as fuck. Its basically saying, "If you're not a bright eyed optimist, you're psychologically damaged." Sure, cynicism is generally born of idealists who are hurt by the world, but that like... frankly, I'm pretty cynical and my dad didn't give me bad touch or anything. I just... look around and I see a shitty world. Maybe you interpret the world differently, I'm not going to judge you for that. I TRY to be an optimist. I WANT to see the good in people. But no, I was probably just spanked too hard as a child.
Dude every video on this channel is like that. You realize that the writer can only see things from his perspective, and so, in his cynical moments, he sees this. I feel, the more I watch these videos, the more I feel like they're pandering to hurt, and lost people looking for themselves. the traumatized. and you know, they probably do a great job about making people realize things about themselves. But he definitely pushes the envelope of "WERE ALL BROKEN. HALP I NEED A HUG"
I was called a cynic today and started doing a bit of research on the subject. This brought me here. The lack of kindness from the wider population is what drove me to my world view, It would make sense that kindness would be the way out but if you take a vast majority of people (in a group) the amount of kindness that is actually available is minimal. In my case Cynicism doesn't feel like a self protective reaction, just an acceptance of the facts that i see day in and day out, no matter how hard i try and look for the good. I wish i could be more optimistic about people, but when i try, I get knocked back again. Its a learned behavior.
I'm a cynic and for very good reasons too (recovering from a trauma), even though it's true that you are not 100% cynical, I would say I'm a cynic to a certain extent. It all depends what environment or situation I'm in, and how I choose to respond to certain reactions, whether I can trust that person or not.
I'm not a cynical person, but this video is such a blatant appeal to the idealist and optimist. Oh yes, inside every coldhearted person there is just someone who needs a hug! Awww, how relatable, how convenient, look how we can use psychoanalysis to undermine their philosophy! The claim that "inside every cynic is a disappointed idealist" is just a sweeping generalization. The fact that the cynic was abused by life and mistreated can apply to anyone, and thus doesn't explain why cynics are the way they are, the connection doesn't stand up to scrutiny. I'm not a cynic, I truly believe in the power of human beings to be good people for the sake of others, but this video is a shitty explanation to make the idealist (the majority) feel psychologically or morally superior.
Loved the comment. But I would add that there are some people who sound like they enjoy ruining somebody's day by being unnecessarily cynical about something. You know, like, when you're in a good mood and say: "such a nice day" and then the cynic will point out that one cloud to get you down. It's like some people can't enjoy anything and want you to share their misery.
Extreme cynicism is probably a bit more unhealthy than Skepticism. But I don't see why it's bad to talk about the bad things about the world. I still have faith in humanity, do does that mean I am not cynic? I still criticize everything.
Andrew GT-B When you say "Skepticism" are you referring to the state of disbelief or the psychology term? For either reference, I am curious as to why you think it is bad.
Skaylla-kun No, I mean that I look at things skeptically but that's different than looking at things cynically right? The extreme cynic seems to assume everything is always bad.
I'm cynical because I don't fall into emotional traps. It's a fact that everyone is selfish and out for themselves. Ayn Rand pretty much nails this, which is why so many people hate her.
Ayn Rand is a ridiculous hypocrite. She spent her entire life bashing a social safety net yet when she got old and sick and needed one, she took it. Her and her husband applied for and received social security in the 70s, she is an absolute joke of a person. And honestly, she isnt even a very good writer.
@Siyovaxsh En-sipad-zid-ana they died for their families and their OWN honour, that's a selfish act, not saying its bad but let's call a spade a spade! Human beings never do good for nothing, they want their own name to be echoed through time by others! So Rand is right when she says we do things for self interest
This implies that cynicism is a flawed position, but doesn't actually bother to explain WHY that is so. Is it really out of touch with reality to expect the worst in an existence where the only guarantee is death by chance? I'm afraid hugs won't be fixing that any time soon, guys. People don't need hugs as much as they need things like honesty and self-reflection. Not everyone who has a problem with the world is a cheesy cartoon villain with unresolved mommy and daddy issues. And who the hell DOESN'T have psychological problems that stem from their childhood? Sheesh...
The Problem With Cynicism Is That Cynical People ARE Expecting The Worse In Life Beacause It'll End In Death, But If They Were To Make The Effort To Actually Make Life More Enjoyable, Suprisingly, Life Becomes More Enjoyable. I Know This From Experience, I Was Struggling With Depression And Generally Thought That Being Pessimistic Made Me Smart, But In Reality, My Pessimism Had No Roots In Reality, And That All You Can Do In Life Is Hope For The Best And Realise That Ocasionally You Will Get The Worst.
Yeah, Its Just Cynicism And Nihilism, And The Entire Post-modern Mindset That Life Has No Meaning Annoys Me Because Yeah, People Have No Meaning Or Higher Purpose, But That Doesn't Stop You From Finding Happiness In Other Ways, Hell Because You Don't Have To Get Some Great Universal Purpose People Can Do What Ever They Want. (Sorry If I Seem Rude I Just Wanted To Vent My Feelings)
As a cynic myself, I can confirm this video is mostly correct. While I may not be a victim of psychological trauma, I became a cynic because of everything that has happened in recent years. Specifically from 2016 till the present. With everything going on in the world between my Autism hindering me in society, corruption/hatred in the Divided States of America, Covid-19, and deaths of some of my loved ones, I just slowly lost hope and developed a cynical view on the world. Now, all I want is to be proven wrong about my views of the world. I just want to go back to the good old days when I believed the world was a great place. The thing is, being that I'm well-educated, I know the sad truth of humanity, and I can never unlearn it. I know that those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it, and that is why I believe things will never change, for humanity rarely learns in the long run. For example, the people know that there are corrupt politicians, yet they continue to elect these dishonest crooks that don't care about them, and then the people wonder why things aren't improving. Smh
As someone who is occasionally harshly cynical (and having a friend who is *constantly* cynical) I can say this is pretty accurate. They aren't easy people to be around. But the feeling of joy you get when they show those rare moments of pure kindness to you are worth it. My friend is often very harshly worded with me, sometimes tearing me down with words to the point where I wish to abandon the friendship. I don't because I care for them and I know they're really just a big teddy bear underneath. But on the rare occasion that something terrible has happened to me, they'll come over and give me silent company (for once non judging and simply supportive). They'll ward off tactless people who want to ask me if I'm "all right" when I'm clearly not. And they'll be the ones to enact physical contact, such as a hug, for comfort (something they never do). These moments are rare but precious to me. I cherish them greatly. (Then there are those times when the cynic becomes completely overwhelmed by a terrible situation that not even their cynical defense can combat and breaks down crying. These are moments of pure vulnerability and it warms my heart that they would allow me to comfort them during these times).
There is much more truth in this than most people are going to admit. Ive been playing this role for years until I was more or less forced to confront my trauma and started healing. These days Im a much more happy person but I still acknowledge the fact that a cynical persons view on humanity is by far the most realistic one. Humanity is messed up, driven by greed and bound to destroy itself. But thats how its supposed to be. We need this because only someone who suffered can truly appreciate happiness and love and the importance of forgiving yourself aswell as others.
While we cynics are not necessarily motivated by trauma, I do agree that, for many of us, our cynicism stems from how we have observed that the many hopes of humanity are being unfulfilled/made ever more unlikely due to humanity.
kman2010era Exactly. These people think that life is supposed to be full of rainbows and unicorns. And when their unrealistic expectations are squashed they become whiny little bitches who won't let anyone enjoy anything.
SmogHouseTradingCo Did you not read the comment I posted above? We are not perfect, it is unrealistic to think humans are perfect. you cannot humanity to such a high standard and then become disappointed when nobody can live up to it.
No one can be truly selfless, because in the end, people who do "selfless" acts, do it only because it rewards them in some way, the reward being in the very least, that it makes them feel good, therefore it wasn't selfless. Because people do not willingly do selfless acts that make them emotionally feel bad. If a species generally acted at the detriment of itself or its own species in a selfless effort, it wouldn't survive, every living organism acts to cater for that of its own wellbeing or the wellbeing of its species. That's evolutionarily the case. I'm a Cynic, simply because it doesn't make sense any other way.
If it helps, I watched this and thought 'yes, this WAS me". But I realized the destructive power of the cynical attitude on the quality of my life, and made the necessary changes.
"Cynicism guards a wound of idealism dashed and hope betrayed. Anything that reawakens our childlike (naïve) knowledge that a more beautiful world is possible generates, alongside the uplifting feeling of hope, an upwelling of fear, grief, and pain. We are afraid we will be disappointed once more. It is much safer not to believe, safer to dismiss it as idealistic, impractical, impossible." (Charles Eisenstein)
It is giving one of the worst interpretations of why people are cynics. I'm not a cynic because someone broke up with me one time, I'm cynical because I've seen shit happen to others. I read the news. I listen to horror stories from my sister and co-workers. I am cynical because life has given evidence that there is a lot to be cynical about. To reduce it to "sometimes people don't hang out with them" is reductionist nonsense that tries to ignore the actual shit that's wrong. I'm not just "cynical".
@@professorbaxtercarelessdre1075 everything is biased...people who are listening to this...there opinions might already be biased in relation to what they want to listen...
what about the good side of cynical people, they don't want others hurt, they like to set realistic achievable goals, they may be more satisfied with life, their expectations are realsitic and they take pleasure in what they do achieve without feeling disappointed. they are content they value what they enjoy rather then the system that everyone else is sheepish about, those are a few i can think of?
Wrong. Cynical people are those who don't hope for things because they don't want to feel the pain of disappointment. Anyone can know that the world is less than ideal. Everyone has had bad things happen to them. Being a cynic is about how one shapes their perceptions to deal with these facts of reality.
***** You're putting the cart before the horse. People do not become cynical to prevent disappointment. Rather, they are disappointed (many times) and then become cynical.
***** In my definition, the cynic is not a hopeless angry defeatist. He still tries and becomes disappointed. But perhaps less so than the non-cynic because he halfway expected it. Even more of an advantage though is that the cynic is arguably better equipped to analyze people's motivations and thus craft appropriate responses to them. e.g. The professor you need a recommendation letter from isn't a completely altruistic being dedicated to your success. Act accordingly.
This video really gives me insight about my father, making me realize why he would have an obsession with politics and say things like "people will disappoint you". I remember him telling me about how his father was an alcoholic and his mother didn't stop his father from being abusive. I'm quite the opposite of being cynical, even though I've gone through a lot of abuse. I'm more optimistic but I do have some cynical traits.
To my understanding this is a superficial interpretation of cynicism. Self interest is a core motivational factor for any action but the understanding of self will determine the interest. Some find self in materialism, some in nature and some in society. It's absolutely okay to be cynical, to express that is your choice and to interpret it's meaning is up to the audience. For sure i can say that if a person is cynical then they are not bound to feel sad or dull or depressed as shown in this video.
I used to live my life with high expectations of people until through time all of that was just hammered down to low expectations and now I live my life with everyone including my own family calling me a hater because of the way I feel towards others. I can’t even open up to my family about my feelings without being called an asshole
I also still can't shake the fact that the guy narrating this, I know has had sex, multiple relationships, has reasonable looks, no major deformity's, has lived in nice homes, has written very successful books, has money, owns a car, and gets to travel the world, and had the opportunity to get an education and one of the hot shot fancy universities, sure he may face or has had to face depression and may suffer less apparent issues, but my point is, I wonder if he would say the same things if his life where a tad bit different. And what do I know, he may not have even written this piece. I just know there are darn good reasons for my cynicism, some of which I know this narrator probibly hasn't experienced. Not saying that he can't put in his opinion on the matter, I just feel some of the generalizations go a bit... far.....
I know that this is true, from my own period as a cynical teenager/young adult. It comes back sometimes as a symptom of depression. But I've found that accepting my personal awkwardness and fragility, paired with a healthy dose of high standards but low expectations, have made me happier overall. I don't need cynicism to seem smart any more. It actually feels more like teenage immaturity and posturing nowadays.
Cynicism is actually a healthy no bullshit point of view. It's good to see both sides. Positive and negative. If you are too positive, you will get a reality check sooner or later for example idealizing abusive partner, trusting people you don't know very well or carelessly driving with your car and causing an accident.
I feel like this is only true for some cynics. Others, for example, may not have emotional trauma but a desire to seem more intelligent and well informed than the people around them and mistake relentless, obnoxious pessimism for actual insight.
The problem with cynicism in my view is that it breeds evil. If everything is broken and the system is against you, you become a criminal as a way of rebellion, or worse, you support "benevolent dictators" that promise you that all that needs to be done is get rid of the people who screw things up and everything becomes better. But it doesn't become better; it becomes worse.
How does critiquing the world around you, and seeing things for what they are breed evil? Most actual cynics would scoff at the notion of some benevolent dictator solving all the world's problems, and adopting anti-social behavior is a whole other thing entirely. Ill never understand why being weary around people, and being careful with expectations is seen in a negative light by most people. It's honestly retarded.
One thing of cynicism that people forget, and something that seperates it from pessimism (Though they do coinside alot) is that cynicism believes in stoicly continueing through life. That despite the selfishness of the world one must keep pushing forward to survive. Pessimism can lead to catitonia. Cynicism doesn't. Though I agree that this form of cynicism is true, and hell is probably the one mine takes. But, it's more complex than a short video is. This does have a nicer take than many reactions to cynics. Most are attacks to try to get them to think liek others.
OR..... they've observed human nature, society, corruption and trends and have come to the intellectual philosophy without a damaged or troubled childhood or an arrogant need of superiority.
As a cynic myself, I'm not nihilistic / unproductive, I don't think those go hand in hand, I'm actually much more productive because I assume there's little chance of me succeeding. I think it's why I was able to establish a Career as a Game Artist doing what I love. I should've failed, but I sacrificed everything (socializing, friends, relationships, events...) throughout my 20s, and worked harder thinking my future looked bleak. This was largely based on experience too... 4 years of unemployment, shitty commissions, being used / exploited, living the "starving artist" stereotype, and about 100+ job applications and rejections later. It is true, my Cynicism is partly a defense mechanism --- "No expectations, No disappointments", at the same time, you can't trust something / someone / an experience that has a track record of failure. But I will say, it did indeed begin after a breakup, and a string of impermanence & disappointments.
"They disappoint themselves before the world can ever do it for them" - Most powerful statement in the video in my opinion.

Agreed
@Leon Jan I don't understand

Oh yeah!
THANK YOU!

Your comment is cynical. You need kindness Asap. I like ur picture luv ❤

Same here, I am confused as to why cynicism is looked at as being a bad thing...

A bit over dramatic and exaggerated but yes part of being a cynic is to avoid disappointment.

A misanthrope specifically hates people.

The are only so many times you can be optimistic and trusting and end up lying face down on the pavement as a result before becoming cynical
Its basically saying, "If you're not a bright eyed optimist, you're psychologically damaged."
Sure, cynicism is generally born of idealists who are hurt by the world, but that like... frankly, I'm pretty cynical and my dad didn't give me bad touch or anything. I just... look around and I see a shitty world. Maybe you interpret the world differently, I'm not going to judge you for that. I TRY to be an optimist. I WANT to see the good in people.

Human beings never do good for nothing, they want their own name to be echoed through time by others! So Rand is right when she says we do things for self interest
Rand is awful. Not everyone is out for themselves, I'm not only out for myself and I know many people far more selfless than me.

Anyone can know that the world is less than ideal. Everyone has had bad things happen to them. Being a cynic is about how one shapes their perceptions to deal with these facts of reality.

I want to be a cynic, but I get too damn optimistic about it! :D
Tony James Gilpin You want to; but you'll regret it.
That's adorable.

Tony James Gilpin I'm pretty cynical and everyone says that I'm a downer, it's really annoying
Depressed Penguin : Have you seen Happy Feet?

@@SkillUpMobileGamingEvery one has the choice to be brave. But here we cowards are. Be brave.
I used to live my life with high expectations of people until through time all of that was just hammered down to low expectations and now I live my life with everyone including my own family calling me a hater because of the way I feel towards others. I can’t even open up to my family about my feelings without being called an asshole
dont let them put you down bro
I feel you dude. I can't even open up to my therapist for the same reason
Not saying that he can't put in his opinion on the matter, I just feel some of the generalizations go a bit... far.....
booooooring
You have a point.
Government and bankster corruption can't be denied. No one should take personal blame for what's not in their control.
