Student Asks Obama About Cynicism And Gets A 10 Minute Rant That Nails It

  • A student reporter, Patrick Forrest, from Fresno City College asks a question that draws a rant from President Obama.
Student: Earlier today, one thing we talked about was civic engagement, and a line was used in the State of the Union address of “don’t give into the cynicism of the day.” A poll released by Reuters yesterday shows that nearly half of Americans feel that the elections are rigged in some way. Is there any goal or plan of the administration to help revitalize the faith in democracy that seems to be lacking?

@@Jordan_Dossou humility is the ability to know when you need to stand your ground, or roll with the punches. People whom lack humility get offended easily, because they always take themselves too seriously. On the contrary, you can also lack it because of severe self hate, with is obviously unhealthy for said person. Obama has humility because he found the happy medium.

Am I fanboying over Obama? No, I'm appreciating the qualities that I feel all Presidential candidates should embody. Populism and false humility is what I see. Him saying what you pointed out makes no real call to problems within the democratic party. As he points out "the democrats have gone far... the democrats went left" and the republicans "have went far to the right". He's "humble" "president-like" speech does nothing but spark at a certain level a war of ideas. Something not surprising, the democratic party has been doing so for years and finally got the widespread reach they've been waiting for.
The idea of wanting others to see what you see and calling them names for refusing to consent on your same views does not play well with the idea of an open mind and objectivity, it doesn't even play well with the idea of being well educated. One should make a claim, explain his reason for said claim as much as he can or is able to and at the end let others make their own mind; not expect from them total accordance with something they think is obvious, if they reach this point at least realise that what you think is obvious has many more facets to it then you thought, then analyse it again.

I'm a republican, and an active duty member of the armed forces. When Obama first got elected, I would have been quick to say it was because he's black and America is so liberal nowadays that white people voted for him as a means of apology. He's still not well perceived in the military, but I gotta say, as much negativity in regards to Obama as there is around me, my opinion of him as seriously changed to a positive one. This guy has been level headed and made a lot of changes to our system that....may not of have worked...but were without question a step in the right direction. Even as a republican in the military, he is one of the best in my book. God bless America.

as a non-American, it took me 2 seconds to look his statement about grassroot donations up. Turns out he >did< support it at most times, just not when it actively concerned his own campaign. In the 2008 election, he had the chance to vote to limit campaign donations to 250 USD - which would have been a huge step in the right direction. But he didn't, because he couldn't have won the election without huge contributions from Goldman&Sach's. You could say he has his heart at the right place, but is far from moral relativism - just like everyone else. Except Bernie Sanders. But Bernie Sanders also didn't make it. Funnily enough, this very real,, very serious problem in any democracy on the planet - he doesn't talk about that at all. Because there's no solution to that. And THAT'S why people are cynical.

On the other side of the lake, everyone talks about how this is just an American attempt to ruin our superior economy by enforcing your crappy standards. All in all, its probably just unnecessary fearmongering on both sides. It's a trade agreement. Everyone has a shitton of those but nobody cares except for this one.

    • @YAHGOA
      @YAHGOA 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

You may think our weapon rights are stupid , but enough of us strongly disagree. I don't care much if your people want to have guns or not. It isn't really my business either way. I think your lack of gun rights are stupid, and I think we don't have enough gun rights in the USA.
I imagine, your lack of Gun rights to be about as stupid as your countries people think that our are in reverse. This is probably why it is good that we aren't the same country and we can each do it our own way.
I don't think we need any trade agreements at all, I think just mirroring the tariff would be fine. We in USA can just let the EU do whatever the hell it wants and take what ever your highest import tax plus VAT tax etc on any single ONE of our products/services and just apply it to ALL of your stuff coming our way. There is no way for you to game the system because any attempts to use tariffs to get an advantage, only hurts you not us, and it doesn't require you to agree to it at all.
This actually encourages both of us to lower taxes on imports etc. allowing the best people at making stuff in both nations to prosper and to specialize in what they are good at. We don't even need to make an agreement as this type of mirrored tariff can just be imposed on people with out their input in the matter and actually works better that way.

Our political system tends to rock back and forth. Not enough people vote. The ones who do tend to be charged up about something. So when you sitting president is Republican, the Democrats get angry, the Republicans get complacent. Vice versa for Democratic presidents. The past election, the Democrats were complacent enough to let a Republican in. The Republicans were angry and would follow anyone they saw as "strong". They haven't had strong leadership since Bush, so they went with the most vocal. Media outlets couldn't get enough of the verbal click-bait coming from the Republican front runner, so they kept giving him free air time. He didn't have to spend money to get ahead. All his competition had to raise money, and spend it on commercials. The "news" channels fucked us over. The Democrats fucked us over. The Russians and their proliferation of fake news fucked us over.

Also Clinton sank her own campaign.

    • @booblejots

But could he? My opinion on the American political system (and I did study it to degree level) is that it is needlessly opaque - amendments on bills that are completely unrelated, huge money ruling the leaders of both parties - the point is that nothing can really get done unless you break the rules like Trump. Clinton should never have been on the ballot paper, Sanders was the go to for the democrats and they missed the popular vote there. We have the same 'hillbilly, uneducated' comments about Brexit voters over this side of the pond - thing is, it is unfortunately often accurate. I think Obama was one of the best politicians for a long long time - of any country. Articulate, clear, honest and fair. One of the few that genuinely wanted to improve his country, but was held back by the vested interest inherent in the political system.

the difference is that when Trump complains about things, he shouts and points fingers. That is all he does. He is exceptional at complaining, but a very poor diplomatic character. That is what Obama does, in his position he needs to be a diplomat and see everybody's viewpoints in order to come up with a mutually beneficial solution that everybody can agree upon. For Trump it is just his way or the highway. To him the world is black and white (not speaking about racism). Trump is good at whining and seeing what is wrong with something, Obama is good at seeing the solutions and actually doing something about it.

I also believe that either a) there are some kind of scary reasons why a president cannot be openly honest with the public and make changes for the better and the establishment has become very good at enforcing their ways... or b) he became privy to some information that convinced him that it would do more harm than good, out in the open (which is scary in itself).
Makes me wonder if it's possible to be 'the people's president' in this day and age, or if it's largely simply playing your part in a grand and terrible circus.

    • @Samrx60
      @Samrx60 8 ปีที่แล้ว

Andrew Fishman: I am glad you included in your comment the word "possibly" when you judged Hillary as being corrupt. So far, there's no proof of any corruption. Ask Ken Starr, the hypocritical, recently-disgraced Republican who spent tens of millions of our money on Whitewater and other "scandals" and couldn't find illegality. Just sex.
As for the word "provably," I think Trump is far more deserving of "the most controversial and divisive politician" (and demagogic) label you unfairly assigned to Hillary. When you've been a politician for 40 years, as Hillary has, you're likely to carry large baggage, especially when the entire Republican party has relentlessly kept throwing mud at you for entire decades and has made it its own mission to destroy you.
Think. Educate yourself on American politics: how polarized people are these days; how the 24-hr cable TV & social media distort reality; and how uninformed the majority of Americans are.

I don't think Clinton is that bad. I think she is comparable to Obama. She has also worked hard and made sacrifices for this country. I'm not sure whether her judgement is at the same level as Obama's. But I believe she is still more than qualified to become the president.
As for Trump. I think he is appealing to the worst side of humanity. Even I get tempted to support him sometimes, when he talks about aggressively combating crime in this country. Who wouldn't want crime to go down? Who wouldn't want to feel safe? But I refuse to believe a man who is famous for mismanaging workers and billions of inherited dollars is capable of doing so.

Trump is the one setting black race relations back to the "stone age" by meeting protests against police brutality with police brutality. By sending federal officers to clear out a peaceful protest (go watch literally any video, there's not a single one that supports Trumps bullshit claim that the Lafayette Park protest was violent on June 1st) for a bullshit photo-op where he displays that he has no clue how to hold a book, let alone the Holy Bible.

Obama also pointed it out here when he talked about the election ads.
All these ads but also alot of the media is sponsored and influenced by one interest group or another.
You will rarely know who is behind it and you always have to ask yourself if a "news" really tells the truth or misses important information. Even if the media told always the truth (whivh the surely dont) they can still very easily influence your thinking by just not mentioning opposing viewpoints.

So because some media outlets (Predominantly Faux News, Breitbart, The Daily Wire, CNN, Etc) produce "Fake News", Misleading News, Disinformation or pure Propaganda in the case of Faux News, all media or even a majority of media outlets produce Fake News?
So, hypothetically, because someone in your family line is a criminal, so are you?
Or because someone who does the same job as you do lies, you must also be a liar?
Just curious here, but how much research have you actually invested into "Fake News"?
And who and/or what did you use for your unbiased sources?
One cannot claim to know the truth, to have found the truth, know who's lying or telling the truth, without there being some kind of source for all of that information.
Logically that source cannot be biased or partisan because partisanship and bias are enemies of the truth.
So obviously one cannot claim to know who Lies and who tells the Truth without an unbias source.
So I am REALLY curious how you are so certain that all media or even a majority of media is fake news and I'm also curious what you consider to not be fake news? I mean what/who do you consider to be a reliable source for information?

I'm not saying there's complete and total honesty in reporting today or even 100 years ago. There has always been somebody out looking to misinform/disinform.
But to say that everything all the MSM puts out is "Race Baiting", misinformation and completely intended to divide, is a bit presumptuous, particularly without having or using any form of counter-information to make that claim.
For instance, NPR is a publically-funded news outlet, one that has the highest accuracy/factually rating of any MSM. They're part of the mainstream media.
They're anything but Race Baiters, they have the best record of accurate information being reported, they actively try to unify, not divide, but you've obviously dismissed it with all the other outlets.
