It's not only code that you have to 6 nail and use dabs of tar or silicone, if you don't do it you will also void the shingle warranty. Very good video. I've done many of these, they're very good money makers cause of the extra costs do to time, easy on your back too.

Good roofer here. The problem with the caulk gun is you need to open the ends completely for smooth flowing product and not just poke a small hole in the end inner seal on most tar/cau;lks

Don't roll your shingles over the top like a beginner, custom bend a flashing/ drip edge and start again like a normal eve.
That's what I just had done by my Tuff Shed installers... They couldn't keep them bent so they also nailed on top nails exposed ... Company is having different installers come tomorrow... I'm wondering if rolled shingles is acceptable???

GAF HDZ shingles don't need the sealant. (if i remember correctly) i would recommend
In Newfoundland, every shingle on every roof is tarred down. There are no exceptions. Newfoundland, coastal, just normally deals with days and weeks and months of gale force winds, 40mph and up. Two or ten times every year winds or gusts of hurricane force, 75 mph,,, it is just normal. A few months ago the eye of hurricane Dorian went exactly over my house. I am 25 meters from salt water. No one noticed. It was just a mite windy the day before and then the day after,, but at coffee with 'the boys' in the morning, no one mentioned it. It just was not note worthy. There is an extra man on the roof with the man laying the shingles. Five gallon pail, stick,, much like a five gallon paint stir stick. Two daubs for each tab or 5 across a dimensional,, generous,, about double what you are using in this video,,, nailed and pressed in.. Every shingle. Laughing,, or at least those shingles you want to keep.
I've done many many actual barn roofs like this. With Landmarks, I've never seen a problem. Never used extra adhesive. They have 3 lines of tar on their laminate where others only have two. I have seen others fail and fall apart just like you said. Just sharing info. Not bashing anything.

Love your no-nonsense videos. I'm 74 and solo shingling my own weird 2-storey cutesy mansard roof right now. Question: In this video from July 18, 2019, you showed shingling the steep section, maybe 21/12 . Just up above, the pitch changes to shallower, maybe something like 7/12 or 8/12 . How do you get the shingles over that ridge? Heat and bend plus dab cement? With architectural shingles and no tabs, do you break the pattern so an even half shingle goes over the bend? Do you use a starter strip above the bend and then heavily dab the first exposed course above the bend? Thanks. P.S. ... going to start a channel on seniors taking on crazy difficult projects. Will be recommending your channel.
How did you end up doing this? I wanted to see how he does that also going over that ridge the right way of doing that?
@@OnlyONEbabes I haven't finished, but I'm treating the really steep part like a fascia ... before I get to the transition wiith shingles, I install a drip rail on the slope transition, with the 'vertical section OVER the ice guard or roofing felt, then shingle the mansard section right up under it ... on the shallow sloped portion above, I run ice guard OVER the drip rail, then install a starter course, then continue shingling as normal ... my real water problem is at the bottom of the mansard section because the roof has a cutesy little 5ft skirt at the same shallower slope as up top above the mansard ... not that shallow, at about 12/12, but way shallower than the mansard, so snow slides down and builds up there, as do pine needles and shingle grit ... drip rail useless there ... my best guess is carefully bent shingles in that concave section with a double layer of ice guard that exits over the lower drip rail at the eves ... don't like it, but not much choice ... heating cables are expensive and don't deal with the pine needle accumulation, which is acidic ... ☹ ... cheers!

Great tips! I notice you like to do your stair steps a bit spaced out I personally feel like it’s a bit annoying having to shingle that way. I usually do my stair steps 5 5/8 much prefer to reach the top as fast as possible lol but I guess it’s all personal preference. Anyways keep up the great vids!
Yea I never really realized it helps you reach the top fastest til people started mentioning it. Might work for their style but not mine. I like the movement to stretch out my back. it's a bitch trying to continue around a pipe or something with shorter steps. And when you hit that end edge you're STUCK there for a minute lol
Worlds Fastest Shingler I much prefer your step. Gives you a lot more coverage between seams.
Always six nail. Gives higher wind rating and more manufacturer warranty protection.

The caulk gun doesn't work because it's trying to tell you it doesn't belong on this particular job. You always cut your starters and your shingles from working on a small job like this on a pic, so that you can reach and grab the shingle swing it in front of you at the right angle and use the gun to stop the bottom when it reaches the line. Can you secure the line and nail. There is no need for extra glue. And you don't glue the shingles after you put them on.

Consider using a heat gun and rubber roller to seal shingles.
do u not worry as much of nail placement because pitch is so high. rain or snow wont stay to long?
I actually worry significantly more about nail placement. 6 nail and every one of them has to be in the common bond otherwise the laminated part will fall off due to gravity. Happens on every barn you'll see driving down the road

How do you continue the shingles over the edge to the next slope angle? Is there a certain way or just continue it let it fold over that edge or will it crack that way? Or does it supposed to have ridge caps on that edge where it's a big slope change?
Have you ever tried one of those battery powered caulk guns? It saves your hands. You don’t go home sore as shit at the end of the day.
Rack starter s useless unless it adheres to the drip metal. And the space between the first and second nail is huge. An even spacing is my preferred method, why make an air pocket that’s over a foot wide haha

I am an all-round carpenter and have also shingled many roofs over the years. Now I'm planning on shingling my own roof. My house is a "Steiner house", which basically means a rounded A-frame shaped house/roof. Which also means that after a certain point the use of ladders is useless because of the rounded shape. I was thinking of buying a sh!t load of roof jacks to be able to work my way to the roof. Do you think this is the best way to go or do you have a better suggestion?
Yea I know what you're talking about. Honestly if you're not gettin a lull out there for that crazy shit I would set up a 20 ft stage on your ladder Jack's for as high as you can reach which should be close to 20 or 25 ft. Depending on when your roof starts to curve. After that I would start using 2x6 hooks and boards if you feel safe enough. Depending on where that board height is at. You might want to get a ladder Vader for those few days. Rental isn't outrageous on those either
Whats the safest way to get your shingles to your top pitch?
At 7:15 you got excess caulk on the exposed part of the shingle. Just sayin.

Noob question here... Have you worked with mansard roof? I am seeing some kind of trim boards with the slope breaks, i am wondering what it is for?
If you’re going as far as 4 tabs of roofing cement I would have just bought a bucket of tar and a paint stick and slap the tar on the shingle instead of using a small bead out of a caulk gun. Just my two cents.

Calif has much more strict codes than any other state I have roofed in. Ive been a roofer 33 years and Calif is the last state I would start a roofing company in !
Have you made a video showing how you do your valleys, not the weave, the California style?
Yes I'm trying to edit it together but I don't think i'm going to use it. There was music and a loud compressor next to me. It wasn't very good quality. Make sure you're subscribed though coz I'm going to make a 2 part video regardless where I talk my through 3 different types of valleys, and then splice another one in where I just do them at my normal pace without narrative for the experience guys
California cut is the easiest of the 3 you just cross your shingles onto the overlapping roof @ 1ft across the valley, then measure 2in from center of valley top and bottom get your chalkline draw a line put some shingles on that line and avery shingle you put has to be cut at the end of that shingle
Never nail close to valleys
We 6 nail everything in Massachusetts on my crew we call it hurricane nailing

Just wondering why you leave so much gap between nails on the right side of your shingles when nailing? 1 foot why?
Because the seem on the next shingle above it lands right there and you don't want a nail near that seem because it's a potential leak down the line.

How do you finish the angle on the barn roof?
I like the tips, but I gotta sayy I’ve been a roofer(not just a shingler) for almost 10 years now. My pops has been roofing sense he was 15, and my poppop started his business is 73. Not to mention everyone of my dads uncles also own roofing business, with a select few of their kids. I’ve worked for almost all of them, and I’ve never done, nor have a seen anyone put those dabs of caulk down, or use tar under them. Not saying it’s wrong, but it is definitely over kill. I guess everything very state to state also though. Roof looks good though man.
How do you shingle over the pitch transition? Using Owens Corning Duration shingles on mine I had a lot of trouble getting them to stay down.
I usually just bend a piece of gutter apron the to break it up. I should've showed that here but I was a little newer on the videos

I'm 49 now, and if i did nor get sick with my back, i should have been working till i was 64 years old, the younger people have to work til they are 75!! Why do you leave over 12 inches between nails 1 and 2 and about 6 inches between nails 3 through 6?
Because where the next shingle lands. Water run in between and if there's a nail there it could cause a leak down the line.

On my ridge caps down my hips, some of the tips of those caps were flared up a tad, can I put that roofing cement and get those down lol

There's actually a few different things it could be.. Like the young gentleman before me mentioned, the nails may not be driven all the way down, or sometimes.. On rare occasions, the cap gets bent, or stuff set/stacked on top of them, and it could cause a minor disfigurement.. The third is actually more of a solution.. You should give your roof a few days to "settle".. & hopefully one of those days will be a hot, sunny one.. Shingles are made out of asphalt, and when heated, they'll lay down, seal, and by then, your humpy cap issue should be gone.. If it's not.. Either ask the company who did it if they'll fix it, or sue

My opinion if you have to put tar to make the shingle stay its garbage... in general i think shingles are crap we built our house in Greece in the 60s has the original roof so does every other house that was built then been doing construction all my life in the states and our residential building are a joke comprised to Europe

Looks like to me your doing more harm to them then good bud they only need 4 nails then next shingle will make them.have 8 in one shingle .. your messing the actually seal on bottom of shingle up by pulling up on them I've roofed an we have never had none come.off them.shingles hold up to 90mph winds so no need for all that stuff u just did
Dude I have to argue that bro it's laminated shingles on a barn roof the reason he did it like that is well watch the video again he will explain also on a barn roof every single shingle is a starter shingle so overkill is better then under kill a 4 nail pattern only pertains to a 3 tab shingle, trust me I've been doing this 20yrs you can ask me anything and I'll answer you.......take his advice bro!

Ever read the bundle wrapping? Tells you exactly how to nail. Any other way can potentially void the warranty on the shingles themselves. You do how ever you like... just be prepared to eat the cost of redoing it again if for whatever reason there is an insurance claim or local code violation.

Been roofing over 15years and never heard no shit like that.For example how are you suppose to nail down spikes when you remove your jacks and boards? Eventually that nail head will poke through the shingles and rust and leak.As long as your shingles are nailed in the specified area and your nail depth is set to the proper height on your gun,then there should be no problems slighly lifting an already nailed shingle that has not already sealed to the shingle beneath..With the nail patter and placement he keeps,he actually went a bit overboard by adding the roof cement in my opinion,but that shows the quality of workmanship your dealing with.Taking pride in your work...."
