    PS I find it amazing how many people in the comments somehow found a reason to be very angry over a roofing tutorial. Calm down and smoke a J people. Calm down and smoke a J.

    Very well done video on how to roof a shed roof. Just wish they had used real 5-ply fir CDX plywood though. Don't like OSB board for roofing applications...:-)

    Why would you nail so water runs down between the tabs and over the nails on the shingle below (at 2:45 of the video)?

    IN the video you say to nail the roofing nails below the glue line. Are you sure about this? I've heard doing it this way could result in leaks because water will make its way to the nail and since the nail has penetrated the roof so can the water. If you nail the roof nails above the glue line it will lock out water from coming in. Also, if you had a 1/2" roof deck how long should your roofing nails be?

    looks like your shingles aren't overlapping the edge metal by "one knuckle" as most should then the water won't run under the shingle

    Don't nail below the glue line. You have to cover the 2-3 nails up with the shingle that goes over that shingle. Never leave nail heads showing😮

    Never start with a half of a shingle. The next course will be a whole shingle then. I always start from the center of a roof going out each way so the last shingle on each roof edge measures the same. You don't want a whole three tab shingle ending with it's half slot on the edge anyway. A properly designed roof will NOT be exactly measured to the the foot or three tab shingles will just barely reach the edge. You want an inch or two short on roof length to allow some "forgiveness" just in case the roof is not perfectly square (as many an old roof was originally built by amateurs) and it is pretty difficult to make any new roof perfectly square. The worst roof jobs I ever saw were ones where the the slot in a three tab is only two inches or less from the roof edge proving to every one any slight deviation from square that a roof is, as that sliver of a shingle tab will show changes too easily on the way up the roof edge.

    You didn't cut the drip edge correctly to wrap the corner so there would be no water intrusion to stop future damage you put the felt paper over the top of the drip edge that's not protecting water intrusion at the eave if you're going to run your felt paper over top of the drip edge you should have a cut sheet underneath the drip edge like an ice and water followed by Roofing also all your drip edge seams should overlap a minimum of 3 in and have Roofing cement in between each scene as a gasket stop future roof leaks you should used roof cement at any of the drip edge locations at the starter strip at the starter strip there should be roof cement underneath the starter strip and where the two joints of the starter strip meet there the way you instructed to install these shingles is going straight up the roof meaning cut the shingles every other shingle 6" instead of stair step as you clearly see on the back of the bundle under manufacturers insulation guidelines it will tell you not to run the shingles straight up the roof it will have you stair-step it you should always instruct people to pop lines there for keeping the shingles straight and professional-looking if you're going to try to educate people on how to do Roofing then by all means learn how to do it yourself

      I'm not a roofer, but you confirmed a lot of what I already knew about roofing and what should have been done, like using roofing cement at the eave. Isn't it also advised to put cement under the ridge caps? Not sure his nails are adequately covered by the row above either. Seems like he missed a few key steps. Btw, your comment could have used some punctuation like periods. I couldn't always tell where one sentence ended and the next began. Lol!

    Why not nail into the glue line?

    • @CheapShedsDotCom
      @CheapShedsDotCom  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Fishingtuts Most manufacturers recommend nailing just above the glue line. So that's what I try to do.

    • @pickin4you
      @pickin4you 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +CheapShedsDotCom But your pics showed that you nailed BELOW the glue line, which is a bad idea. You have no glue between the top shingle and the nail underneath. Nail into the glue, or just on the top edge.

    • @davidanderson2732
      @davidanderson2732 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@pickin4you What you suggested is exactly what I thought how it's done and I'm not a roofer. He clearly said and showed BELOW the glue line. This would cause the nails to be exposed to water.

    I was quite surprised to see that these shingles were installed incorrectly in a "how to" video. The photo of finished roof shows many nail heads visible exactly in the slots in the shingles on top. Since nails are clear sources of future roof leaks, this roof will soon be leaking EVERYWHERE! The nail heads should be well covered by the next shingle on top, and no nail heads should be visible.

      Ok, if those are not nail heads, but white lines showing through the slots, then something is still wrong here. Why do the shingles have white horizontal lines designed to show through slots above? That roof would look pretty bad from any angle. This video needs help.

      @@upward94 I watched it. The sound quality was so poor that I couldn't hear it. I am quite familiar with snapping chalk lines (as I did when I correctly installed a roof), but every chalk line I've ever seen is a thin line, usually blue. I have never seen white chalk lines a full half inch wide! Anyway I didn't think much of this video.

      @@upward94 He covered the entire roof with mounds of drifting white chalk? I'm sorry, none of this makes any sense. What is all the thick white chalk for? Don't roofers snap thin chalklines like everyone else does? I think we can drop it because at this point nothing is going to make me like this video. I've paid a ton of money for many roofs in the past, but the only really excellent roof is the one I did by myself.

    ...again if he's wrong, then why did y'all take the time to watch a instructional video? These videos don't randomly show up on your screen, if it did, you still watched it! A professional usually don't enjoy to watch a how to video, the video title is clear.

      Right? Funny how so many 20+ year professionals are watching a paid for "how to" video and bashing the shit out of it! I'm sure it's not how they'd do it, but I'm also certain that the roof will last for years to come. There's a million ways to skin a cat.

    • @KpxUrz5745
      @KpxUrz5745 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@zellwoodskunk Hahaha. This roof will start failing immediately, because all the nail heads are visible in the shingle slots. Every nail is a hole in the roof, and now there are hundreds of future leaks getting soaked in every rain. All right there, even novices see this immediately. What amazed me is why so many incompetent "contractors" post such videos on youtube.

  • @pickin4you
    @pickin4you 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    You NEVER nail below the glue line. You will have leaks from the nail hole. Nail directly into the glue line so the glue acts as a sealant for the nail hole as well. If anything other, you nail above the glue line, not below it.
