    Thanks for showing these different options! Have you tried "toothpaste" tablets? I'm thinking of getting that for camping. :) I just went to the dentist this week. Because of COVID it had been more than 1.5 years since my last exam/cleaning. It wasn't so bad and don't need to go back for 9 months. I have some troubles with my teeth and I've been using a fluoride treatment at night. My dentist and the hygienist recommanded I continue with that and recommanded also a toothpaste that has a different type of fluoride in it. I really see a difference in the health of my teeth since using the fluoride treatment, so I think I'll continue using it as long as it benefits my teeth.

    Many of the chemicals that you spoke about can cause headaches and as you touched on are endocrine disrupters. So this is an excellent video as people look at people who don’t use toothpaste as weird.
    Another toothbrush alternative is a toothbrush stick that comes from trees and is cut to reveal the bristles it is known as a miswak stock or a toothbrush stick and those are completely biodegradable as it’s from a tree and pure that way, some don’t smell the best, but you can always soak them with mint water or mint oil to change that.
    Coconut oil and some other oils are also good for pulling and you could soak herbs in them and use them for pulling.
    This is an excellent video and it’s good to see people talking about this.

      I have not heard of the sesame oil for pulling, but that could get a bit strong. I agree the coconut oil taste is probably better as it’s a bit more neutral. Thank you, I appreciate you putting this video out. Also with your electric toothbrush, I wonder if the bristles are not messed up if the heads could be boiled and recused until the bristles are no longer any good, that could help cut down on the waste too as the would be bought less frequently.

    • @joyoushealth

    Hi
    I finished my education for dental nurse couple of weeks ago, so I'm impressed by the fact that you didn't have any cavities considering you didn't use fluoride in so many years. In school we where taught that you need to use 2cm toothpaste containing 1400ppm fluoride two times a day to get strong teeth. I absolutely think there should be more studies about more natural choices for dental care, maybe the world could look little bit different in couple of years then.

    • @joyoushealth
      @joyoushealth  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for sharing! When you were in school did you learn about Westin A. Price studies on indigenous people around the world and how they had perfect teeth? It wasn’t until they stating eating “western food” that tooth decay, cavities, teeth crowding became an issue, it just goes to show you that healthy teeth are so much more than fluoride. I complete agree, there should be more education on natural ways to care for your teeth. There are many more dentists choosing more natural options which is great! I did have fluoride as a child till around 12 years and I’ve had one cavity which I had in my early 20s and I’m in my mid 40’s now!

    Love the recommendations, but considering you aren’t a dentist or dental hygienist like you mentioned, maybe you should change the title of the video to something like: What I use for my oral health care routine. Just to avoid any problems with people possibly taking your advice as gospel or replacing their dentists advice.
    As a nutritionist myself I find it so so important to NOT tell people to not listen to their doctor or dentist. It’s just not our place.
    But by all means educate people on the facts, and tell people what you do personally if that floats your boat! :)

    • @joyoushealth
      @joyoushealth  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for your thoughts. I don’t think I said at any point don’t listen to your dentist or doctor. I do however want people to also think for themselves and make decisions based on having all the information. All too often people make important decisions about their health without having all the facts and that’s exactly what this video is about 👍🏻

    • @cupcake702
      @cupcake702 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I should rephrase. I never said that you said people shouldn’t listen to their dentist. I just wouldn’t necessarily go telling people to avoid fluoride and use natural toothpaste instead because that could potentially have negative impacts too

  • @bethanygates864

    A lot of people feel dental professionals are only trained to recommend Fluoride. Here in Oregon we spent weeks in school being assigned to debate both sides of the topic.
    I recommend fluoride for many people. Losing teeth takes a huge toll on your ability to eat fibrous foods like meat, veggies, and nuts, and older people, especially those with a dry mouth almost always develop decay on the root surface of they are not using a fluoridated toothpaste or rinse.
    There are some patients I have that are fine without it, but please take the advice of your dental health professional before you decide. Decay, infection, filings, and a decreased ability to chew have a much bigger impact on your immediate health, I see it everyday sadly.

    • @joyoushealth
      @joyoushealth  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There are many sides to the fluoride story. Just like you did, I think it's key to do your own research so you feel really well informed. Where I live in Toronto, our water is fluoridated so we are getting a double whammy of it if you also get it from your dentist. Fortunately, there are dentists who are more than happy to not use fluoride in your child's mouth. I won't be having my 5-year-old's teeth fluoridated but it's a conversation that people should have and evaluate both the pros and cons to decide what is best for them. Thanks for sharing your perspective.

  • @patty-cf7jj

    I have a question about dental X rays for you. Since you’re into natural, non-toxic holistic health, how often do you get dental x-rays? I also go to get my teeth cleaned every six months and I constantly argue with my dentist because they always insist on taking x-rays and I constantly refuse except about once every two years. I once read many many years ago Dr. Andrew Weil said to only get dental X-rays every couple years at the most to limit radiation exposure. Yet my dentist says the X-rays are digital and extremely very low radiation. What do you think?

    • @cdr72916
      @cdr72916 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can look up the acceptable amount of rads to which you are able to be exposed per year. If it makes you feel better, you could even get your own dosimeter so that you are aware of your exposure amount. Dental rads are very important, as the dentist cannot fully evaluate the health of our teeth by only seeing what is on the surface. I personally work in the veterinary field, and if we didn't have dental rads, we would miss the majority of problems, as healthy teeth that are not yet painful can still be infected or impacted, and if left untreated can damage other body systems, including the heart. I can also tell you that I take rads of animals almot daily (wearing lead gown, gloves, and thyroid shield) and have never exceeded or even reached a dangerous level of radiation. Your dental assistant should provide you with a lead gown and possibly even a thyroid shield, which will protect your organs from radiation :)

    What about the waste of an electric toothbrush? I get so angry because I’ve been through 3 the past 10 years because the brand I buy constantly changes their model and then they stop selling the replacement heads, probably to force you to keep spending $100 on a new one.

    Joy or others have you tried these or other natural toothpaste that works with sensitive gums? A note that sometimes essential oils can have contraindications with some health conditions.

    • @joyoushealth
      @joyoushealth  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes for sure. Whenever my gums get sensitive, I use the Living Libations happy gum drops on them and it works like a charm. It happens to me occasionally before my period. Sensitive teeth have more to do with sensitive gums, than your actual teeth according to everything I have researched (unless of course you have a cavity). Ive had fluorosis in my teeth since i was a kid.. Thats those white spots.. Is it possible to remineralise my teeth and make them evenly white?

    • @joyoushealth
      @joyoushealth  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There are lots of ways to remineralize your teeth naturally but TBH I don't know how long it would take. Check out MSM - it's in some natural toothpaste, also check out oil pulling and perhaps using activated charcoal toothpaste but none of these will be a quick fix. I know that you can easily remove it by teeth bleaching or microabrasion but of course, both of those methods are not natural. Of course avoid fluoridated water and toothpaste.

      My point is that baking soda is far less abrasive than conventional toothpastes regardless of what it does to your sunnies 😎 You can see the abrasivity scale here: www.davidjmartindds.com/blog/relative-dentin-abrasivity-rda/
