I have degrees in Kinesiology and Exercise Physiology, and have been helping people get stronger and move better full-time since 2009. Through working with all kinds of different people ranging from elite basketball athletes to active seniors, I’ve learned that the “secret” to effective training is to take a long-term approach. The day you stop training is the day you stop improving, so training programs must be structured in a way that keeps our joints healthy and mind engaged while we build a strong and powerful body. Through sharing information and training tips here, I hope to help more people train for the rest of their lives.

Iam doing same and i lost 50lbs. I will add more cardio to build stamina and more shape body but for now walking and diet changes are best i was not in shape for running or hitting gym when i was winded just after one flight of stairs. Iam getting much better already resolved many health issues as apnoea, oedema, reflux etc.. Walking is not effective from athletic standpoint but also very effective because in this day and age people are barely moving so its still massive upgrade from sitting whole day in front of PC. As was said in video things need time to happen and big mistake is people start super hard beyond their limits and will thinking it few weeks miracle happen and they fail spectacularly. There are many videos of people that do it but that's not normal they are outliners with iron will and dedication and 99% of people cant do it.

You WILL lose weight and I can confirm that since I've lost over 30 kgs in a short period of time. Walking is the best exercise for weight loss, better mental health, anti-aging (combined with sunscreen), better self-esteem, good sleep, lower blood pressure/cholesterol/insulin, boosts fertility, firmer body, less eating (good for those who binge eat like me) and much more. I promise you all of that will show if you walk 1-2 hours a day 5-6 days. Just make sure you have a good pair of shoes.🙂

    • @thulomanchay
      @thulomanchay ปีที่แล้ว +3

Its easy to lose fat by walking when you are carrying a 50-100 lbs load, with a weight loss diet..
When the load get lighter, you won't lose any weight with the same diet.
The weight will remain the same, even when you walk 2 hours every day.
      That called the plateau stage.
You need to either diet more aggressively or dramatically increase your exercise regime to break through that plateau.

This was very interesting, thanks for posting. My own experience is simple, back in September 2020 I weighed 16 stones (224 lbs) and I was shocked to be honest. I started walking 30 minutes a day every day irrespective of what I had on. I have built this up to 70 minutes, once again irrespective of what else I am doing that day, and I now weigh 13 st 9lbs (190 lbs). The only thing I have changed is that I walk every day, no change in diet or more exercise than I was already doing except the walking. I'm extremely pleased with the results, as is my wife!!!!

@pompeychris81 I too have Fibromyalgia (plus other conditions) and while I'm generally active anyway (& had originally started my weight loss journey back in November 2011), I only recently (on January 31st) decided to actively go back to the gym... so I'm back to working out (mostly treadmill work at the gym) AND also walking to & from the gym (since it's practically down the road and around the corner from where I currently live).
At my heaviest (I'm also only a very short 4'9" tall) I was 155 lbs. I honestly didn't know I had gotten that big until August 2011 when I had gone to my 10 year high school reunion... I saw the pictures that were taken, and it was horrendous.
While I don't remember what I weighed (back in high school), I know sure as hell that I WASN'T 155 lbs. & was appalled as to how I had let myself go THAT badly.
I then decided, 3 months later, to start my weight loss journey... I started it on Saturday, November 26, 2011 (the Saturday AFTER Thanksgiving that year) and people thought I was pretty crazy to have chosen to start my journey during the start of the holiday season (with all the food around).
In that first year, I went from 155 & losing a total of 28 lbs. (was down to 127 lbs. by the end of my 1st year). 😊
Right now I'm hovering in the mid 130's and need to get down to a MINIMUM 123 lbs. in the next month or so, as my fiancé & I are getting married this summer (in early August 2022) and I was around 123 when I first bought my gown & need to fit back into it so that I can also get the few (mostly to the length) alterations done... Ultimate goal will be just south of 100 lbs. (around 90 lbs.), but for now if I can get down to 110 lbs. I'll be happy... as per BMI calculators, I can only weigh up to around 115.5 lbs. (for me to be at a "healthy" BMI) for my height.

Walking with a mixed cadence (faster, regular pace, add hills to mix it up etc.) is very effective for losing weight and reduce stress. But you could take the next step of just “watching” what you eat. Stay away from sugars, eliminate or drastically reduce your intake of rice, pasta and breads. Incorporate more veggies, and fruits and even proper portions of lean meats inc fish into your meals. Think about a piece of fruit between meals or after dinner instead of the cookies or chips. For your fastest result bump up to the next level. Exercises and actually count the calories you take in as this gentleman does a great job explaining about caloric deficit. It’s so easy with phone apps these days and subscribe to a channel like this for constant inspiration and knowledge. You are worth the time and effort and you deserve to feel good and live long.

My husband walks about 5 or 6 miles a day, sometimes more but never loses any weight...but that's not the reason he walks, he just likes it. I, who hate walking, would rather eat less than walk or exercise for the amount of time it would take to burn off anything significant ( a lot...too much for me). I've lost 70 lbs in 10 months by changing my eating habits and cutting out alcohol completely ( other than at Christmas, when I regained about 5 lbs in a week...I am convinced the alcohol had a lot to do with it because your body burns off alcohol before anything else)

Walking leisurely does not cut it.
Mostly the stored fat us not used at all, only the energy from glucose in the blood and liver.
Also eating the "wrong" food and at the "wrong" time, tend to put back what walking takes out.

I've been losing a few lbs a month, even tho I'm close to my ideal weight. I also stay somewhat low carb and 'fast' about 14-16 hrs overnight. This will work. You have to find what is sustainable for you. I gradually increased my walking in the spring of 2020, from less than 5000 to nearly 10,000 steps per day by the end of 2021. I did nothing to my eating habits (which I still find really difficult) and lost nothing. Finally, in the second half of 2022, we moved to FL and I pushed past 12, 15, and for the last two months, more than 22,000 steps per day. When the weight started to come off seven months ago, it inspired me to make modest changes to my diet - cutting out lots but not all of the sweets, lightening on carbs a bit. But I still drink some beer and wine most days, and don’t count my calories. I also phased in 3 hours a week in the gym, starting in November. So far, I’ve gone from 222 to 187 pounds in about 8 months, and the impact has been dramatic. No more sleep apnea. I’m stronger, my resting pulse is down, and I feel better. At some point, I may have to make additional changes to what I eat to continue to lose fat and gain muscle, and I am sure I could have lost weight faster by eating less. But, the point is I didn’t have to, and I found something I could sustain, over time, without feeling deprived. I’m 59, this worked for me, and I will never go back, as long as my health allows. Most people can’t find the 2-3+ hours per day I devote to exercise, I get it. But many of those might be able to do a better job of cleaning up their eating than I did. Don’t let anyone tell you you “have to do this” or “have to do that”. The principles discussed in this video work - just find a combination that you can sustain.

The reason why body fat isn't the 454g X 9 calories is because that is a pure fat number but body fat is stored in adipose tissue that is only 85-87% fat for most people. the rest is adipose tissue, water and some nutrients. That's why you have to reduce the amount of calories in a lb of body fat by 13-17% from that 454g X 9 calories number. It's somewhere between 3473 -3700 calories for most of the population.

That for me, was too much weight to fast. At about 30 pounds lost my clothes were fitting really good. 20 pounds later I looked not very good in my clothes because I lost muscle as well. But looking good again due to weight training. I should have been doing BOTH at the same time.

I am about 210lbs and its mostly because I just don't move at all in a day, just sitting in front of my computer. I have regulated the amount of snacks and food I eat, but not so much that I count the calories. So I figured that I could use the gym-membership that I had and just walk on the treadmill every so often for 1 hour. And its not bad, I just set it to a semi-quick walking speed with an incline, place my phone on the machine and just watch some videos while walking. I don't feel sick or tired after doing so, no muscle pains either, which is quite nice. The machine calculates that I am walking off about 420Kcal an hour by doing so, and there are some small results already, like almost no double chin when tilting my head down. Good luck to everyone else.
(I would walk up some trails in the mountain instead, but that would require me to go all the way back again + I have pollen allergy, so walking in nature isn't as comfortable.)

Thank-you for this video and thanks to those who share their success stories. Reading about success helps my motivation. I currently walk about 2-3 miles/day 6x/week. The thought of working up to 10000 steps/day (about 5 miles) can be overwhelming. Any tips on staying motivated would be appreciated.

Pace yourself. Don't worry about the 10k steps, just walk until you're unable to go further, distract yourself by listening to an audiobook or favorite playlist and just walk. Check your steps when you're done and you praise yourself for any step(s) taken because you're better than you were yesterday. Hope this helps because it did for me! Happy steps! 👏

I can hit 10,000 if I break up my walks during the day. So a 20 min walk to work, hour long walk during lunch and 30 min walk home from work will usually get me to around 10K. Break up the walks and it will add up 😊

In response to your question about calories in fat, according to a Healthline article, "Body fat is mixed with fluid and protein. Therefore, its composition and calorie content are not the same as pure fat," and "Body fat tissue is 87% fat." Using 87% gets you to around 3500.

I never struggled with weight; swam, walked, but had a bad bout of sciatica and a back injury a few yrs back plus other things so I was virtually in bed for 3 yrs and gained 40 lbs. Ouch you say. I was on a walker at the age of 58 which was unacceptable; I love dogs suddenly no dogs in my life. Physiotherapy and walking have earned me my life back plus a Covid 19 dog --- spend an hour and a half with her outside and am mindful of not lolling in front of the computer which is how i make my living so am mindful and healthy eating etc. I didn't track weight loss but it is obvious I am back to normal. At my age losing weight did result in some loose skin. Who cares????
This may sound breezy but it was HUGE for me. I would say to everyone whether you are losing weight or not; get outside!! It totally fixed my sleep which is huge. Perhaps people are not seeing immediate results; one day at a time and don't go from 0 to 100 which is a recipe for disaster. I started with a fitbit but after learning that I had an old hairline spinal fracture which was playing havoc with all kinds of body alignment i just get in what I can and if I just don't feel like it, Kiwi the miracle dog does, so bound to get out there. Great video, inspiring.

Allow your body eat itself through IF to shrink the loose skin. Intermittent fasting.

@@InGodwetrust365 Intermittent fasting can certainly work as a weight loss strategy. Your body can use stored fat for fuel as long as you are in a caloric deficit, it doesn't matter if you do IF or not. IF will not shrink loose skin.

English isn't my mother language, so I wasn't able to follow your calculations. But it's said, like in 5:40 , that fat has about 9 kcal/ gram. that's right for fats in food. So 1 pound (0.45 kg) of (for example) vegetable oil has about 4050 kcal.
The info on the page of the Mayo Clinic with about 3500 kcal per pound (0.45 kg) is about BODY-fat. Because body fat does not only contain triglycerides on the same high percentage as usual food oils (like vegetable oils for cooking) the level of energy containment is lower.
    I hoped this helped.

I walk an hour a day and 30 min a day. Plus I get additional steps to equal about 15,000-16,000… I don’t lose weight tho. I’m normal weight but not at my ideal weight. I’m 20lbs over my goal weight. I def do not lose weight walking all these miles 6-7 a day. And I can even gain. 🤡💀. When I’m actually overweight, I walk a lot as well. But it doesn’t change my weight for some reason. The only thing that does is being very hungry and not eating as much. I’m over 40. If you’re very overweight or have other things going on - like you’re normally very sedentary (which I never am unless I’m sick or have a depressive bout) then maybe walking will help you. For me, I just naturally eat a little more, because my hunger DOES go up when I’m doing all these miles every day. Even tho it’s just “walking”.

Walking has been a part of my life for 25 years..ofcourse with occasional breaks due to other commitments. In 50 min walk i lose around 250 calories..in the course of the whole day i lose approximately 1500 cal. My weight is stable at 60kg... why am i not losing weight.

    • @trainforever1142
      @trainforever1142  3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Thank you for your question. It’s difficult to provide personalized advice without a lot more information. What I can say is that if you’re daily energy expenditure is 1500 kcal and your body weight is stable, that suggests your energy intake is also around 1500 kcal. Losing weight requires being in a calorie deficit, so either further increases in activity or reducing calorie intake would be the next steps. Things like eating more protein, drinking lots of water, getting good sleep and doing strength training two or more times per week are other habits that help with weight loss goals.

When you calculate energy expendidure for body fat you have to take into account that body fat contains water. You can easily find by searching on the internet. So body fat is not pure fat and does not hold the same number of kcal.

Any recommendations for best walking shoes? Ever since I hit 40yrs old a few years ago my feet get sore easier. So far my adidas are my best ones but even those don’t perfectly reduce it. I’ve been doing 30 min of walking in am and 30 in pm recently. I did put on quite a bit of weight the last 6-7 years (just kept climbing up- totaling like 50-60 lbs). So maybe the weight gain has also contributed to my feet sore easier. My weight used to be pretty consistent in my younger years, only fluctuating up or down about 10 lbs. even after having kids it dropped back down to normal quickly. So ever since scale started climbing I’ve been quite shocked how I could let it get so high. I hope walking helps me change direction. I know I’ve got to lower sugar intake too. I’ve never been a soda or juice drinker, just water, but I love my chocolate and cookies. And I ate cleaner in my 20’s avoiding processed stuff. Somehow I’ve gotten off track.

Thanks for your comment. There's no exact best shoe, it really depends on the person and what's going on with their feet. The employees at high quality running shoe stores can often give some basic insight. Whatever feels comfortable and allows you to do more activity with less pain is generally the way to go. Doing that while also building foot and leg strength with various exercises is a great two pronged approach to help reduce pain while also building capacity. Good luck!

Thought on the fat cal conundrum: any chance numbers could have suffered from metric/non metric pound? USA lb has 454 grams, metric 500- doesn't quite cover the 500 cal difference but almost (roughly 10%, i.e. 3500+350...) - and of course: thank you for the brilliant vlog!

Thanks for your comment! A friend of mine helped me figure this out, it's in another comment somewhere - hard to find, there are so many now. Basically it's that part of a fat cell isn't fat, the cell wall etc. That explains the discrepancy.
