    We build custom bumpers, flatbeds and headache racks and have always just sand blasted with 80 grit steel media and blew off dust with air. Then powder coat. Have done this way for past 7yrs with great results

    On some re coat stuff I've done.
    I found that everything I wiped would leave streaks where the cloth rubbed.
    So I saturated the whole job on prep wash , dried it in the oven and problem solved.
    All I do is switchboards though.
    Love your channel, learned heaps.
    Would love to take a working holiday over to USA and hone my skills.

    Hey there, great video you gave me a lot of good ideas. I just recently was given an old smoker probably big enough to fit a Harley peanut tank and smaller to medium size fenders, lower forks, triple tree and what not. I’ll be modifying it to have an electric oven style burner in it that has a regular wall plug seeing as I don’t have electricity in my garage ( having to use extension cords till I can figure out a more practical way, I rent so can’t go adding full electric panels and all that to the garage). I’ve never done powder coating but absolutely love the concept of it. Gunna be coating my own motorcycle parts and whatever my lady wants probably tumblers and what not. I’m not trying to go making a bunch of money maybe one day if I get good enough to put out actual quality product. Don’t want to put my name out there on products till I know it’ll be top quality so people are happy and won’t have issues down the line. Just subscribed to your channel and will be trying to do as you all do, I like how professional you are about it. I honestly was thinking all I had to do to prep was degrease and get squeaky clean but you showed a lot more to it and I really like the process you do. I’m very multicultural about things and making sure whatever I’m doing is done properly. This medium size smoker was mainly the idea to have the housing that’s already made to hold up to high heat. One day I’d like an oven for powder coating big enough to do motorcycle, quad and bicycle frames. Thank you for you video and putting the helpful advice out there for people like me just starting out even as just a hobby to clear the mind.

    My process has always been, sandblasting, apply conversion coating (hold tight), then outgassing, then cool down, then apply powder. Ive had very few problems. I never wipe, that's a sure way to get lint.

    That's 1 huge difference between collision repair painting b/c is the prep n wash vs our rags to wash down n blow off n tack, whereas I do both n I've actually found p/c to be so much faster and easier than say prepping a front end n bumper for b/c. I've never really used a rag while doin a P/C job vs a collision job. I've been doin collision for 41 yrs and P/C for 11 yrs. I actually done so many 18 wheeler air dams n bike frames it's crazy. It used to be B/C on a bike frame now it's a rather quick P/C job. The guys thought I was crazy for not using my rags n wash n tack final taks on a p/c job. I tried yrs n yrs ago to explain why, they still don't get it. I have used a final tack prior spraying powder before, just depends, but for the $ I'd do p/c all week long vs prepping and painting a front end in b/c. But I'm a collision painter at heart, love it die hard, but really enjoy p/c. Your so right about the preparation of different parts n no rags. Get it clean n dry n spray. Bake n done. Nice lil video man. Hopefully some will understand now prepping and rags. If new you can but any job collision or p/c you can have cross, but it won't hurt the part to wipe if clean. It's just an extra, unnecessary waste of time and money and possibly crossing contamination, same as a car or anything. Good luck in the future.

    A small side business like myself can't afford to prep like a high volume powder coat shop like yourself. I have been powder coating freshly built quarter midget chassis for 9 years now at one to 6 per month and every single one I wiped with a lint free paper towel and brake clean. I used to add a hot rinse of water but found it didn't help much it just gave a little flash rust which may have helped give the surface a little more Ra/Rz

    All I do is first put on clean rubber gloves than degrease the part, sand blast , wash off the sandblast dust with regular warm tap water, blow off , outgass. Cool off , spray powder and done. Lol that acetone crap ppl used to say to do is 100% a waste of time.

    Just picked up my dirt bike frame from powder coating and it’s full of sand internally 🤔 aren’t you supposed to plug every hole before the media blast? I have been trying to blow this out all evening and when I shake it I still hear rattling from the sand 😛
    Should I just leave it? I’m going to spray some “fluid film” inside the frame to prevent internal rust, which was the reason I had it repainted in the first place. Is the media gonna be a problem with the “fluid film”?

    • @RightNowPowderCoating
      @RightNowPowderCoating  2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I would try to get it all blown out as it could hold moisture. This can be a common issue when blasting, not all areas are able to be covered but with compressed air you should be able to get it cleaned out.

If I want to redo the rims on my side by side, Can I just get the fronts blasted to remove the black PC and then apply powder and bake (leaving the existing black coating on the inside and back of the rims? Hope that makes sense.

    You didn't explain what a phosphate rinse does for the process... Can you explain why ease

    • @phiksit
      @phiksit 20 วันที่ผ่านมา

      It's usually a weak solution of phosphoric acid that is applied to help inhibit corrosion. If you get the concentration just right it will leave a very slight white powdery coating which I don't rinse off unless is too thick which means your concentration is too high. I usually dilute my phosphoric acid with distilled water and help the coating dry with an air nozzle or just hang up the part and let it drip dry.

    Both questions aren't about this video. With a 2 tone job do you do a partial cure on primer, both top coats, and full cure on the clear coat. If not what would be the best process? Also, is there a way to do a clear coat for a gloss and matte on the same piece and both turn out as intended, or a partial coat for clear gloss, and partial clear matte like a 2 tone job?

    • @RightNowPowderCoating
      @RightNowPowderCoating  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes, partial cure till top coat is on, unless the powder requires full cure, check the tech sheets. you can do matte and gloss clear on same part, you would just need to wipe the over spray off like a two tone.

I have palmsanders and wire brush bits, sanding is okay with me, but we all need your guidance on stripping wheels without being a business like yourself with such capabilities.

      @Right Now Powder Coating i contacted greensolv and i dont have money for the tank heater, the 5 gallon buckets of strip, let alone the tank or barrel. It is thousands of dollars. We need your guidance on how to get wheels stripped of their OEM powder coating using accessible means. The kitchen electric oven for baking and sanding tools are covered mostly.

    • @RightNowPowderCoating
      @RightNowPowderCoating  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@bennett4881 it's very pricey for sure. To be honest I didn't have the money either. I took a loan for it. But I was buying 1k worth of b17 a month. So over the course of a year it made sense. Paid it off with their payments plan have never been happier. Growing pains suck. Having to borrow money sucks. But you got to take the risk to get the reward. If you have the drive you will be fine. Growing a biz is not for the faint of heart. You can do it! I'll do a video on finance and Growing ur powder biz soon....bit I promise I'm not that far ahead if at all from most of u....just willing to share my story.

    • @bennett4881
      @bennett4881 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Right Now Powder Coating So whenever you may have time or an open slot for a video idea, I highly recommend one that's a tutorial for greenhorn powder coaters whom have very limited budget, access to general tools and possess high ambition. I want to do rims. i have nice palmsander, oscillator, corded drill, plenty of sandpaper, full face respirator, space, dual voltage gun, soon a kitchen electric oven and already plenty of stuff. I just can't go off the deep end with Chemisphere or Greensolv, those advanced acids are unrealistic for me and so many others getting interested. I understand videos are draining, 100%. But they're so resourceful when you think them out and can be rewatched a ton. Stripping OEM powder off rims at home resourcefully. The only product seemingly capable is Aircraft remover Ultra, which looks like the follow up of methylene chloride being restricted from production inducing the non-M.C forumula, which has recently been topped by Ultra.
      I could see buying one 5 gallon pail of B17 or something for $300, but only if there were a specially funnel shaped container for wheels that hallowed out the center so no acid is unnecessarily being taken up by the empty space in the center of the wheel. Then submerge and strip one wheel at a time. the center of the funnel space being in the middle of the drum occupying the empty space; and the rim face is facing up submerged under an inch or so of acid. Us beginners need these special tips and tricks to save hundreds and thousands, but from knowledgeable pros like you man.

    • @SCwrestlerTTSB

      For consistency sake (texture, color) you'd be best to strip it down and blast a little for prep.
      That being said, I've done it alot of different ways to see what works and coating over current powder can definitely work. But you'll have issues with illusion/dormant colors. Also, too much powder build up will be brittle and not last as long. Can even crack later on.
