Vishal Bhardwaj's 'Khufiya' & how Rabinder Singh spy scandal exposed R&AW's ugly sides

  • Vishal Bhardwaj's 'Khufiya' has let many Indians sleep well at night, knowing that traitors in RAW are being dealt with as traitors should be. The real-world story is a lot grimmer than the real world story, though, involving egos, incompetence and lost opportunities. The worse news: Even though films about RAW are getting ever more juicy, the organisation itself is struggling with the demands of a changing world. Watch this video by Praveen Swami to know more.

0:43: 🎥 The headquarters of the Research and Analysis Wing in New Delhi is described as a low-budget office block that lacks light and air.
4:01: 🕵️ Investigation reveals that the suspected spy, Rabinder, operated from his home and used an encrypted fax machine to send gathered material.
8:05: 🕵️ Foreign intelligence services were attempting to penetrate RAW, as evidenced by the arrest of former Indian Police Service Officer KV uni Krishna in 1987.
10:56: 🕵️ Paul is believed to have passed on classified documents to a CIA operative, and his escape from Delhi was discovered by Ros Katmandu spies.
14:37: 💡 The video discusses the need for the Indian Police Service (IPS) to provide more support to the Research and Analysis Wing (RAW) in developing long-term linguistic and area skills.

This was exceptional. Mr Swamy has redeemed himself. I had been feeling off late that opinions were trumping information in his last few videos... The production value seems to have gone up as well..Kudos to the print..

Some where good points right at the very end. Intelligence tradecraft is going to become increasingly important if India is to take its rightful place in the geopolitics of the world and is not to be considered a lightweight when the Americans, Chinese, Russians, Brits, French and Israelis make decisions that'll impact the world and the region. Jai hind!

It's distressing to hear opinions about what happens behind closed doors in our establishment, whether true or not. India's capabilities as an state aspiring to grow as a "superpower", seems shaky in every inside stories coming out.
What is really frightening is that everyone seems compromised and real Indians trying to work for its benefit becoming obscure. Indian polity looks fragile. Jingoism is making it worse.

Rare Intelligence/operational failures in its 75 years of independence = Everyone is compromised, Indian polity is shaky. I guess it doesn't take much to tickle the funny bone of a doomsday conspiracy theorist. Smilling Buddha, proving links of Mumbai attack terrorists to the Pakistani establishment through years of works by its human and signal intelligence and 10s of successes doesn't count.

😅very well said. We never learn. We have a huge carpet under which everything gets buried. Will we ever grow up. The culture of perpetual employment and favour seeking from the establishment of the day will only produce a crop of mediocre and incompetent officials whose sole outlook would be to have it good till they go to their grave and in the meanwhile make sure their sons and daughters have comfortable life in the West. Tragic but true. Wanted patriots!!

Learning from past mistakes and learning lessons out of it is a personal trait, and to get it cultivated across the organisation needs significant investment of resources...for s democratic nation like ours, plagued by deep partisan politics this is something very difficult to achieve...the bureaucratic vision and political vision are simply not aligned

    1. Lesson learnt again and again is that we must stop this free border business with Nepal. It is dangerous for our national security 2. RAW like any other agency elsewhere, will have such hiccups and we need to have leaders of very high integrity to lead such organizations.

Intelligence/Espionage is a craft where failure is more common than success. The balance between success and failure in intelligence work is dynamic and influenced by the specific circumstances of each operation. Additionally, the successes often remain undisclosed due to the sensitive nature of the information involved, while failures may become public, contributing to the perception that failure is more common. Take the case of the world's best intelligence agency Mossad which completely failed to see a massive attack on its soil by Hamas in the recent weeks. In India, we often love to paint a sad picture about our intelligence operatives not giving them enough credit for their contribution. That said there is always scope for improvement.

It is the sign of times that we rely on Vishal Bharadwaj and Pravin Swami and Print to "expose" important matters.
What could be the purpose of a film on RAW at this juncture? Is there no place where we voluntarily stay away in the interest of national interest?
If it is freedom of expression, then where is it for Kashmir Files? Who decides what is freedom and what is propaganda? This is what makes my skin cringe - this naked double standard and liberals always standing with topics that put nation in a tight spot.

You missed the most important point of them all Swamy… By default or by design… more likely by design
Only the wearer knows where the shoe pinches. There never was, is or will there be a utopia. It is never easy to Govern Nations - especially a large polity.
Tailpiece: In this world it is not always what you see is what it is. Showing the other cheek was never an option. Admire the movie. Such stories are not dissected
