  • On this day 62 years ago, Goa officially became part of the Union of India. In episode 941 of Cut The Clutter, first published on 16 February 2022, Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta explains how tiny state was liberated & why it took India 14 years after Independence to rid it from Portuguese rule.

Good call! Indian politics is not that interesting anymore -- it is stable and predictable (with some intermittent drama from the NPCs).
This is great because India has moved on from political drama to actual governance, becoming the fastest growing large economy.
Even Mr. Coupta is not claiming coup attempts by the Indian army anymore.❤

Today when India is relatively strong everyone is critical of Nehru. Imagine his plight, Pakistan a NATO ally constantly sniping at India and India not having such a strong military and also a weak economy, he was being asked to take on a NATO member. People critical of Nehru don't ask how come we have not been able to recover our Chinese occupied territories ( even if some of them were occupied in Nehru's time).
Like Prime Minister Vajpayee once said "It is very easy to start a war, but we must know how it will end" it"

You may think, going back in time. In reality, when Tibet was forcibly occupied by China, US has asked for position in India near Ladakh which Nehru refused assuming it will become another East India company. US wanted a position to counter China and USSR from going deep south. As USSR realized Nehru's mindset, they started giving their old arms to India and ready for any military support. I agree that Nehru's position was awkward, but he was not brave enough take the help of Indian army and rather believed on Krushna Menon. Everything is history. When you don't take decisions appropriately, you as a leader looses the plot and that is what can be attributed to him. Unfortunately, Indian history can be distorted and hence instead of publishing the truth, it was painted Nehru as great visionary.

But why was Pakistan the ally of NATO? Eisenhower tried to be a friend. But Nehru was considered massively prickly. It's as if we are ignoring the character of this incredibly vain man who isolated so many capable men while running after such absolute communist trash as Krishna Menon

What the hell are you talking about? Pakistan was never a NATO member. Also, NATO is a defence pact predominantly concerned with defence affairs in Europe and the US. Other than involving itself in the ousting of Gaddafi in Libya, it has never involved itself in the affairs of Asia! Are you smoking drugs or something?

Mr Gupta you did not mention that the first free elections were held in Goa shortly after its liberation and a non-Congress party the MGP, came into power. Portugal had to wait till the mid-1970s for its first truly democratically elected government. It is the only instance in the world where a former colony adopted democracy before the colonial power. The election in Goa softened anti-India feelings in several western countries, and showed the difference between Nehru the democrat, and Salazar the dictator.

In hindsight it would have been tremendously favorable for India if Goa had stayed in Portuguese hands. It is such a small piece of land compared to India. Imagine a door to the commercial powerhouse Europe directly in front of you. Shengen Visa issued upon arrival in Goa from anywhere in India. Tourism alone would be making the area rich beyond imagination. But then again hindsight is always 20/20.

I've read Patel a life by Rajmohan Gandhi and other Patel's biographies which clearly indicate that Sardar Patel wanted Goa's liberation much earlier and it was ONLY Nehru who opposed it and delayed it (before NATO even got created which happened in 1949) in 1948.
of course, it's a different matter that timing of Goa's liberation was before 1962 election (which helped Nehru/Krishna Menon) and it proved BAD for India as it made Nehru confident in dealing with China (forward policy) and made China think India will attack it, precipitating 1962 war that led to India's defeat (not a theory. but explained clearly in JFK's forgotten war by Bruce Riedel. This sounds again like, defend Nehru episode, pretty much, by a old lutyen media

Much earlier? Patel died on 15 December 1950. He had not cleared French till then, who were much more open to leaving. All that was done under Nehru. You have simply discounted all good arguments for avoiding early Goa liberation and started pointing towards "intentions" which somehow you know. And so it may not be your theory, but it is Bruce Riedel theory which somehow for you is Gospel.
And then you somehow link it with China war as well. China attacked us in a place where it had prepared well and India simply had no quick way to react. The "defeat" was primarily because of the cease fire. In fact, by 1967 India had plugged many holes along that front
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nathu_La_and_Cho_La_clashes
So Nehru was the best there was. I would have done almost everything as Nehru given the situation of the time and the international situation.
As far as 1962 election is concerned, Nehru didn't need a war to win it. There was no one apart from Congress who controlled India. Congress got 361 and CPI 29 seats. So please stop spinning stories

Sudhir fadke marathi famous singer done singing shows to get information, maps and connection in goa to use for thse fights. I have met those freedom fighters even after 2014, government recognized them as freedom fighters and given award to them by president. In goa, who got caught those suffered a lot in those 15 years but even Indian people doesn't know this and doesn't know how people just done everything in their power to get freedom without no any government support. I don't know why we are not able to answer the question of why Goa was not liberated during Indian independence in 1947. The Indian independence was(should have been) about having independence from all western colonization. I am sensing appeasement and character building exercise instead of nation building.

For all practical purpose, the imperial European powers, dictatorship or democracies, lost their colonial possession due to only one real and culturally true, democracy - the US.
And thankfully, WW2 made it the superpower while reducing all the colonial powers to pauper - economically, militarily and culturally.
American President Franklin Roosevelt and his non compromising pressure on the supremacist, colonialist British PM Winston Churchill, apparently elected by a democracy - led to Indias Freedom. Not some pacifist movement in India.
Maybe it is time we recognize his contribution and make a grand statue of Franklin Delano Roosevelt in our capital city to honor his memory.
Unfortunately he died early and not witnessing the actual freedom of the colonies.
This also tells us, democracy or dictatorship - it makes no difference for a state to its greed, colonization and loot of other nations.

Yes Europe was ruined, imperialist ate each other making them weak. But that also means continued loot of the colonies.
      But that did not happen.
Another force that helped the colonies to freedom is the emergence of Soviets. USSR.

Nehru was a deeply flawed man, who was perhaps not the correct man to lead an already independent country toward progress.
