  • Lebanon, caught in Hezbollah-Israel crossfire, is a sobering case study of how much damage a country can do itself by embracing bad ideas like constitutional sectarianism & proportional representation. In Ep 1331 of Cut The Clutter, Editor-in-Chief Shekhar Gupta talks about why Lebanon is a failed state, its curse of “Confessionalism” and lessons for India

As elections come closer, Mr Gupta seems to become more overtly propagandist
Appreciate how he can make a propaganda video under the mask of a pseudo sermon, giving the example of a distant, failed state with many complex problems of its own...

Your analysis and particularly your comments about applicability of this sort of arrangement in India is 100% accurate. Apart from the article which you have recommended & attached, "From Beirut to Jerusalem" Is an excellent book for anyone wanting to know more about Lebanon. Eg.If dominant caste hegemony on other castes is the mandate then majoritywill fight for their share of power, whats wrong in that “Jithni Jiski Aabadi Uthna Uskaa Hakk’

The problem is not proportional share in the power structure, the problem is democracy in deeply divided societies of the Thitd World. The truth is democracy evolved in small European nations with negligible diversity till the end of the Second World War. In third world conditions of deep fault lines, democracy gives rise to civil war ( Ceylon) dismemberment (Pakistan) perpetual ferment ( Nepal ) authoritarianism ( East Bengal) and violence and general lowering of standards to accommodate competing interests ( India) .

    3 things we learnt
    1. Everything in Lebanon has deteriorated since 1950 EXCEPT the population of muslims
    2. Lebanon changed from a thriving nation to a rogue nation, failed state - correlation? rise of Islamic population
    3. it debunks the theory that caste doesnt exist in christianity - there are so many sects, practices in christianity also and one doesnt mingle with the other. Same with muslims - they have various tribes in addition to faiths like sunni, shias, deobandis, ahemadia etc who kill each other, nations are at wars based on intra muslim faiths

They proposed this lebanese style power sharing between hindus and Muslims. Surawardy had an affinity towards lebanon. Probably he died in beirut.

That title was given to any number of cities... and it's just romanticizing bullshit. Neither are drugs the problem. The problem was always religious sectarianism which was used by external powers that were fighting proxy wars in countries like Lebanon. The only rational response of a citizen of such a country is to leave and to apply for political asylum in a rationally governed country... which the intelligent people did, of course. The resulting brain drain eventually finishes these countries off completely, economically, culturally and politically. The success of a society is determined by its top 1%, whether we like this or not. Societies that lose that resource are doomed. They descend into cycles of needless violence... like Lebanon and Palestine.

I am referring to Cyprus, which was plagued by civil war and then invasion by Turkey which has resulted into de facto partition of the small island into a Greek Cypriot speaking larger portion and tinier Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.-recognised only by Turkey. Another not so funny fact. During the Mandal case hearing, advocates appearing for pro-reservation parties had cited Cyprus as an example to follow. But the judges of the Supreme Court observed that Cyprus had also faced a civil war and division. These were oral observations and are are not part of the judgment but the interchange between lawyers and the judges was reported by the press.

We this throughout the world, or ethnically homogenous. We see this even within our northeast in nagaland, people often underplay the impact of religion in destabilizing the state. Had we offered Jinnah the prime ministership, we e would have Lebanon 20x , fractured forever poor and having clamorous call for sharia to be implemented . So contrary to populist versions of Shashi tarroor asking for reparations, the British did a favor by partitioning India and in a way amputating gangrenous arm and saving civilization body.

Yes, if it's implemented in India, it will have similar consequences.

I'm Lebanese Christian , Lebanon used to be a majority Christian country. Alot of Christians have left for economic reasons, many Lebanese find great success overseasa, but we still have a very close connection to Lebanon and can still vote. At the end of the day we need to get on all we all fail. I see Muslims and druze and my fellow Lebanese and generally get on as apart from our religion our culture is the same.

Been following Shekar Gupta since his Indian Express days and I am quite surprised at this comparison of a failed nation state to India, even a fleeting reference would need a strong argument which was indeed missing. If this was supposed to be conceptual exploration of confessionalism then the entire episode didn’t touch upon how Levant region - once a cultural and secular epicentre has deteriorated and probably this was the reason so. Such nation states are managed in a better way by folks like Gaddafi, Saddam and Assads (in my personal opinion only)

He is good. Linking political system with demands of I.N.D.I.Alliance. i did not think print will shred congress (read rahul gandhi) and opposition in such a way.
He is almost saying opposition slogan if implemented will take india in lebanon way.
I disagree with him on same cannot happen in india . Yes it will not happen overnight. If its implemented as opposition wants, system will work till time current aka my generation dies out. Next generation will donot face struggle as faced by us and their nationalism will replaced by other identities as this identity give them more benefits.
I hope rahul gandhi can learn from his greatgrandfather nehru and leaders of that time. They knew same system was implemented in lebanon in 1947.
They did not fell in that trap to avoid partition which rahul fell into.(similar system was jinnahs demand)
Nehru chose partition over this system. As much ppl dislike it, partition gave indian democracy breathing space for 50 years to take roots
Lebanon followed that system and fell into civil war in 30 years.

Interesting podcast by Shekhar!! For national and state elections, based on the religion of the voter, votes cast will have a certain weightage based on the population percentage fixed on some date like 1947 or 1965 or 2000!! This will ensure that population dynamics will not affect character of the country!! In particular, if Hindu majority is lost in India at some time in future, then the constitutional arrangements will come under threat and we may have entirely different governance structure!! We need to protect ourselves against this and think of ways to do this.
