He would come home with a heavy heart some days and would try to leave it all with his badge, but there were days he'd head to the barn to be with the horses ,goats or chickens and I knew he just needed to decompress. Then he'd come in and sometimes want to talk, other times not. I never pushed . He lost his battle to Mesothelioma in 2010. God bless all who serve and protect us. I was a Firefighter/EMT for 20 years. This song hits me hard in my heart. I’ve seen miracles and I’ve seen the worst. The weight of the badge changes you over the years. You can’t control it. I pray every family out there who has a loved one wearing a badge will understand and accept this. It is only fitting that The King of Country would do this tribute. It means more than you will ever know, George. Thank you so much and God bless.
My father was a volunteer firefighter for 11 years. Now, 20 some-odd years later, I'm a paid-on-call firefighter for our town. Been on for 3 years now and he still jumps most of the time when my pager goes off, and he always pulls up the scanner feed for our town so he can listen in and make sure I'm okay
This song hits hard I lost a friend that was a firefighter/cop/dot worker he tried to help a broke down car and was shot first and gunfire broke out after it I found out 3 days later I lost him
I began in law enforcement February 1987 and retired January 2022. You are so right. It changed me and I couldn't control it. Doing much better now after turning it all over to God.

On 03/19/2022 while George Strait was performing this song at Simmons Bank Arena in North Little Rock, AR, the North Little Rock police, EMT and Firefighters were helping a young lady that collapsed at the beginning of the song. As the song played with George unaware of the badge at work, he played as they did just as they called to do…The meaning of this song was alive, in action and only the fans around this young lady witnessed the true weight of the badge. They protected her, they took control, made sure she was going to be okay. At the end of the song, she unfortunately was wheeled out by EMS. Thank you, North Little Rock, AR emergency personnel, you wear your badge with honor, and I pray that young lady is okay.

My grandson is a police officer and I'm very proud of him
coming from a young kid who had no respect for police, but so much respect for our Veterans(almost 30 now). I feel like we should normalize saying "Thank you for your Service" to these men and women as well. So for all our first responders and men and women in law enforcement, EMTS, local Fire Depts. Thank you for your service, and trying to be the Heroes our communities need.
I send my kids up to every officer to shake hands or give high fives and not once have I seen one turn them away but they definitely always leave with a smile
I carry special Thank you officer business cards for them. I got them from humanizing the badge.

My late husband and my son are/were soldiers...and you thank them for their service...and most of the come home...WHO YOU SHOULD REALLY THANK ARE YOUR LOCAL POLICE. THEY HAVE TO PUT UP WITH YOU AND THEY PROTECT YOU!!!! They are in more danger that most military. Yes, I love and was proud of my husband and am proud of my son. I appreciate the thanks, but they come home from work...and the job. BUT THE POLICE DO IT FOR LIFE and they are always in danger. And that is around home! They are real HEROES all of them.

Driving around in a taxpayer provided car with the air conditioner on full blast, even when you're inside a Dunkin' Donuts doesn't count as a "sacrifice".
Worked SAPD for 34 and 1/2 years and lost a good friend and officer who died in the line of duty, it still brings tears to me to think of it.

As a child I didn’t understand the weight of my dad being an officer. I was proud of course. I was used to him being called out during the night, popping in for holidays to eat and leave again. As I got older, I started to worry.. and pray he’d come home every day. I thank God he made it through, and has been retired for many yrs now. He carries the weight of all the faces he recovered, all the families he had to notify and hold. I’m sure there’s a lot I don’t know. I’m glad he still goes to eat with the men he worked with, and that they made it through too till retirement. Let us not forget our DNR (department of natural resources). Just left federal law enforcement after 15 years. It's bittersweet but I couldn't take seeing only the bad in people anymore. 23 years of my life were spent in combat, preparing for combat or hunting down, terrible people, who've done terrible things. My husband was a police officer for 35 years. He rose from a patrolman to chief in our hometown. He was an excellent officer and I was always so proud of him. I love George Strait's "Weight of a Badge". God Bless all law enforcement officers everywhere.
As the daughter of a LEO, this song hits. I never knew when my father was on shift. I think my parents did that so my sister and I wouldn't get worried. As an adult, anytime I heard that was a shooting back home I would feel sick until I got hold of my father or my office would look into it because I was on shift.
God bless those that go into harms way to keep our communities safe.

My dad was a paramedic for 28 years and a firefighter for 15, im so thankful that he came home to me, my mom, and my sister every night and every morning after his shift.

You're right. The weight of the badge isn't just held by the one who wears it. Their families hold part of it, too. I did as a solders son, and I don't see much of a difference from that seat!! We don't see the dark. We just live in it from time to time.

Just finished 30 years as a patrol sergeant in Canada, the badge got heavier every year. Bless those that still serve. Its a tough road nowadays, hang in there and god bless you all.
I served for 40 years wearing the badge in various units over the years. My wife used to tell me to have fun when I left for work. When I got home she was waiting at the door with the babies. I asked her one day why she would tell me to have fun. She said that was her way of telling me to be careful. She couldn't say be careful. She said she would start thinking too much about all the things that could happen. I retired as a Sergeant. Had to have 2 surgeries from injuries over the years and she stuck by me. After I retired, her mother told me that my wife would cry when she knew I was in harms way and she was so relieved when I retired. I never knew what she went through. I really appreciate this song from George Strait.

That's the worrying and waiting I subjected my family to. I've had a great career and I've been blessed to come through it. I have some scars, both visible and not. But I've lost brothers and sisters along the way, they didn't get to the end. All were taken too soon. Their families were forever burdened by the weight of the shield. Thankfully I can hang mine up. God Bless those who gave it all, their families, and all who support our law enforcement.

my grandfather has been fighting fires since 1978 my mom started in 2000 im about to start but i was raised around the fire dept my whole family are fire fighters and this song sends shivers down my back
What an incredible honor! To have a retired officer give a collar devise from his original uniform, and a replica of his own badge, to Mr Strait is a sign of the deepest respect any man of service can render. It would be the equivalent of me giving someone my original shooting badge from when I was in Marine Boot Camp in 1976.

Respect to all the first responders who take their jobs seriously and protect and serve our communities. On the other hand, shame to those who hide behind the badge to harm others in the name of the law. I'm looking at the officers at Uvalde who stood around scared and backed away like cowards.
I raised and lowered the flag for 10 years on a military bases. I went on to be in charge of those who were tasked to do the same after me. God bless the USA.
