I think when Jonah was young, he played rugby with his friends on sand, which is much more difficult to run on compared to grass which built up his strength.

Jonah Lomu was rugby's first real star in the professional era. His career started just as the professional era of the game began, and he was one of the major reasons that rugby players got bigger, faster, and in way better shape.
One of Lomu's most under rated abilities was his balance. He was often able to keep his balance, and his legs driving forwards, when most others would have been knocked over. It's a tribute to his strength, and his agility to be able to move as he did, especially at the speed at which he was able to do it. 260lbs and can run a 100m in 10.8 seconds? That's terrifying when it's coming at you at full speed, snorting like a champion bull in Pamplona.
Off the field, he was a lovely human being, which only contributed to his legend. No one had a bad word to say about him, and the tribute Haka that was done at his funeral is on YT and worth reacting to. He was universally feared on the field and liked off it.
And all this, is coming from an Englishman whose team was on the receiving end of his speed, skill and talent far too often. His illness robbed us of an even better career, and his family or a great person. RIP Jonah.

He was the youngest player when he started playing international games he was only just turned 19 when he first started. And the music is courtesy of our own New Zealand Rapper Scribe. And no we have to wear mouth guards playing this game, probably only protection we have in the game oh and learning how to tackle properly is a must.

Jonah revolutionised the game. He was the first player who was that big and could move that fast. Putting him on the wing set a precedent. Usually he would have been a forward. Now massive wingers are everywhere.

Jonah would still be a hell of a lot bigger and faster than anyone playing today. The guy was immense. These are international players he is swatting out the way and running over. NFL teams were very interested in him early in his career. But if you are already playing for the most winning sports team in the history of sports - any sport, it'd be hard to leave

He had a rough childhood, and was stabbed multiple times. He died of kidney problems. They never made it clear if that was from those early injuries. He played even after developing the kidney problems. He was one of the most respected players. At slightly over 6ft 5ins he was tall for a rugby player, that did not stop him being one of the fastest in the game. However it was his heart and drive that defined him.

Jonah is Polynesian of Tongan heritage and born in New Zealand. Power, speed with explosive first 20m but could maintain his speed with nimble feet and a crazy ability to duke (side steep) he outplayed players his size with balance and speed & smaller players with power. Turned down Dallas cowboys NFL to stay in rugby for a lot less money.

His 40 yard dash would’ve been light years ahead of anyone in the game, simply MAJESTIC with the ball in his hand at full speed , Unstoppable it took an army to almost stop him every-time……One on One was a no contest and foolish to the man who stood in his path……his SIZE was also a game changer especially for a WINGER….no one had a wing this SIZE back in the day, every TEAM especially his opposing WINGER dreaded facing JONAH…….
    Only one JONAH 🔥💯🔥💯🔥💯

    Basic rules
    1. ITS LIKE THE triple option in football but your not allowed to block or pass forward..... you can only kick it forward, not throw
    2. If the ball hits the ground and goes forward, it's called a knock on penalty....
    3. If you block to create running lanes, there is an obstruction penalty, so consequently you have to have great ball movement to get great runs with no blockers......... which is why Jonah was so special, he didnt need it...
    4. the line of scrimmage is not a set point where someone is tackled, it starts with whoever has the ball, and everyone has to be behind whoever has the ball, or its offsides..
    5. WHEN there is a penalty, you either have a scrum, or a field goal if the team not committing the penalty is close enough...
    6. When you get tackled, you must release the ball or you will get a penalty.....So even if you run 80 yards, you still loose the ball if guys aren't around you... Which means the objective if you cant score is to wait fir your teammates.... Whenever there is a tackle, the ball carriers teammates clean out the defenders who can pick the ball up before the offensive picks up the ball up to advance it.....
    7. A tri(touchdown) is 5 points. Extra point is 2

Here is the thing about Rugby and I played 2 years.... Although you would think it would, concussions happen much less frequently in rugby because you instinctively dont tackle leading with your head because of no helmet gear..

i suppose the easiest way to explain rugby is like basketball BUT
    a) you don't have to bounce the ball when you run with it
    b) you cannot pass the ball forward
    c) to defend you can tackle the ball-carrier
    d) when you get tackled its a free-for-all to win the ball on the ground!

Jonah is the master of initiating the contact even with several players around him. A wing is the man that eventually gets the ball in space and his job is the be faster than the rest of the team. Jonah happened to be 118 kg of speed and aggression. Their are bigger men than Jonah on the field like the 4 & 5 who average 198-205 cm and around 118 kg and 3 & 4 are even heavier. Facing Jonah requires Jesus. Bloody legend. Gone home to Jesus now. The size difference thing, had more to do with the end of apartheid than it did with Jonah. Jonah was a factor for sure, but, the main reason for why players are so big today is, South Africans seem to just breed monsters. Before the end of Apartheid any sized man could take his position except in the second row and lock and front row, where it is pretty much a pre-requisite for the back rowers to be tall and the front rowers to be stocky, so long as they are strong, they train hard and they have the adequate skills to make the team, that was probably all you needed. Then, came the end of Apartheid, and at first it wasn't a whole lot different, but, the South Africans were frustrated with their lack of instant success after apartheid, (with the springboks being THE team back in the 60's) and they must have felt that one way to address it was start drafting some of their big men. They saw the success that Jonah was having, and they must have thought 'well one thing we have is a surfeit of monsters, so lets make use of that. So, in the 2000's you started to see the South Africans with big rangy men right across the whole field, and of course other countries needed to counter that. But yeah, I first noticed the team where the the big rangy guy was the rule rather than the exception first emanated out of South Africa.

What the hell has South Africa and the end of apartheid got to do with Jonah Lomu?

@@CVTECK1 Well here is a pretty cool fact USA are the 1924 Rugby Olympic Champions (Gold medalists). They still hold the title until Rugby in its full form returns to the Olympics. I am not talking about Rugby Sevens (the shorter form of Rugby) which is in the Olympics.
