    6ft 5, 265lb and ran the 100m in 10.8 seconds. Incredibly strong and surprisingly agile for a for a guy that size. The most destructive runner of a football ever. I saw him play in the late 90's in a pre-season game at Ballymore against Qld and he treated the Wallaby winger Ben Tune (who was also over 100kg) like a speedbump all night. The big man was something we have never seen before or since. On top of that, such a great human being and humble man. RIP Jonah

    Jonah at 6.5 ft and 120kgs he could qualify for the 100m in the Olympics he would not win but qualify. Yet he had major kidney problems so we never saw him at his best two times a week he was on diailise machine. When he had a kidney transplant he had the kidney put up higher and behind the the ribs so he could still play rugby

    Christian Cullen, Cheslin Kolbe, Tana Umunga, David Campese, Ben Smith, Bryan Habana, Jeff Wilson are some great outside backs (Jonah Lomu was an outside back), none of them had Jonah's size but were all lethal finishers (try scorers) too.

      @@gohammtv Its a lower percentage play though because the bounce up of the ball is random and the defender could get it. A last ditch move

  • @lukajward
    @lukajward ปีที่แล้ว +8

    In rugby you can only tackle someone if they have the ball in hand, that's why you often see players do little kicks over the defenders so that they can run freely without being tackled and then recollect the ball. Jonah didn't do that a lot tho as running straight through people wasn't really an issue for him. You should definitely watch a video on the basic rules of rugby to have a better understanding of everything.

    A very young & shy Jonah Lomu before he was known around the world and in NZ, playing in a schools 7's tournament back in 1993. I remember watching this live and thinking omg this guy is going to be the next big thing and yep, he was! The incredible thing is he played most of his rugby very sick with kidney disease and eventually was on dialysis & needed a kidney transplant. What could he have been if he wasn't ill most of the time and struggling with fitness? We will never know. Gone way too soon! RIP big man. th-cam.com/video/g944CyUPEIo/w-d-xo.html

    Defs the GOAT as a Winger. In Rugby union you keep possession as long as your team controls the ball. There is no forward passing, so you have to pass backwards, which, if a gap opens, means your guys are already getting the ball at speed. Sounds weird to US football, but the roots of that game came from Rugby Union. Would love to talk with you more about this game. I played both codes.

    • @whokilledjr3719
      @whokilledjr3719 ปีที่แล้ว

      One of his best games was against the wallabies in the year 2000 when rugby was well and truly professional. That backline was huge by today’s standards with the likes of mortlock, Ben tune, Chris Latham etc and he ragdolled them all. Not to mention destroying forwards whom were huge even by todays standards such as Phil Vickery. Size and strength of players hasn’t changed that much over the past 20 years, mainly has rugby has a high cardio requirement.

    Lomu is one of the best ever, but actually a number 8 Zinzan Brooke had a lot more skills than Lomu he was a 'loose forward' so he was involved in much more of the game, but added to this he had the brains , drop goals, a proper number 8. next guy I would say is prob dan carter, next probably McCaw, then christian Cullen, jeff wilson. But as an all round player Zinzan was the greatest player ever, but Lomu became popular because of his devastating 'go forward runs' power and speed, but rugby is more than just that .

    Kicking the ball is the only legal way to pass the ball forwards in both rugby codes.
    As long as the next guy on your team to touch the ball , was behind the line of the ball when it was kicked (that imaginary line runs the whole width of the field, then it's a legal play and play continues.

    Richie McCaw is the GOAT. Richie holds the record for most wins. Most rugby World Cup wins. He’s had the record for most wins as captain. And he’s the only person to win back to back World Cups as captain. He has a 89% win rate. And was named world player of the year 3 times. He was also named world player of the decade (2010s) even though he retired in 2015.
    Jonah is a more exciting player to watch than Richie though. And Jonah is known as Rugbys first superstar. He made rugby well known.
    Another player that is up there is Dan Carter. Also named world rugby player of the year 3 times. He holds the record for most points scored.

    Joelie Videri was another great and also tragically died due to kidney disease.
    If you want to look at the greatest players of all time in terms of skill and not just smashing people; Richie McCaw is arguably the greatest Rugby player of all time regardless of position (is now an extreme multisport athlete). Daniel (Dan) Carter is the greatest Back of all time.

    Sensational specimen. Great player. All time best 11? Not Close. For example in nz There are 3 others with both better strike rates and overall number of tries. Howlett, Savea, Joe rock's. And defence? Not close. But it looks great in a highlight real When hes smashing them small french dude'sl, and marketing teams like big busting player's. But not even close to nzs best winger. And that's ignoring the likes of habanna etc from other countries. The best wingers have great timing. Speed and bulk is Less important. Howlett scored the most tries because he was super fit and was always in the right spot. Though in my opinion savea was the best ever 11 in nz. Jonah was a beast though, and incredible that all on buggered kidneys. RIP JL. Also watch the abs 2015 World cup play off Games for peak savea. Reminds me of JL.

      @GoHamm TV Before you do that, you might want to do some research on the Haka. It's a Maori cultural greeting/challenge/dance performed as a show of respect. To fully understand his funeral, you need to understand the Haka. There are a lot of very good videos on you tube showcasing them. There are lots of different hakas, depending on your tribe and/or the occasion. It was mostly used early on as a form of intimidation/inspiration before battle. Most New Zealand sports teams do it before a match. Some do their own, some do the more famous "Ka Mate " ( pronounced Ca Mah Tay ). But I do suggest you look into it more.

    He was an amazing rugby player. Massive and amazingly fast for his size. But one thing he never was able to score a try against the springboks (south africa). Even when they had the smallest wings on the international stage ever

    Dallas Cowboys offered him a $10 million signing bonus. He turned them down. Would have been compared to Jim Thorpe from a century ago ago.

    Amazing player. I was glad a went to a few of those games back in the day. Most players back in that era where worth watching. I lost interest in Rugby when it for too political recently.

    Why do HUMANS say? "I ain't even gonna lie."
    Is it because INDIVIDUALS that say this usually lie?
    Or is it because HUMANS think they're their mind and thoughts.
    As an individual that doesn't lie, I don't need to walk around telling people, "I ain't even gonna lie".

    Joost van der Westhuizen and James Small taught Jonah Lomu that he was human after all. Lomu’s performance against South Africa was pretty average. I still think he was way over rated.

    Some of these clips were after he already had kidney disease and on dialysis. He had a rough childhood and was stabbed multiple time. Post injury infections left permanent weakness.

    And he did a lot of this while suffering from the kidney disease that would eventually take his life way too young. Imagine if he played fully healthy! Ruby Tui and Portia Woodman are the current GOATs of women's rugby. The "chip kick" is a great tool but also a dangerous one if you don't do it perfectly as you can give the ball away to the other side. Other teams definitely tried to shut Lomu down, but the entire team was talented so leaving 14 other All Blacks unguarded doesn't work either.

    He would’ve schooled Bo Jackson had they played each others era…..both in their primes….JONAH could do both Defensive and Offensive and don’t need any protection from his team….the dude would’ve ran over everyone in NFL…..everyone!!
    And I know how athletic Bo is….he was phenomenal…but he would’ve struggled BIGTIME in RUGBY….it’s just the way it is…….
    On top of this JONAH was sick during most of his career….had he been FULL PRIME….who knows what damage he would’ve gone on to do
    The first GLOBAL superstar of RUGBY…..
