I recommended this video. He died of some kidney issues I believe and he supposedly had these issues throughout his career but nobody really knew at the time

Heart attack from deep vein thrombosis after multiple long haul flights for charity reasons, though no doubt kidney related or worsened.

The guy that gets run over in the very last shot, is the former England fullback Mike Catt. He now basically makes his living on the speaking circuit recounting that exact moment, when he was absolutely steamrolled by Jonah. That a guy can make a living talking about being mowed down by Lomu perhaps gives you an idea of how much of a total star he was. RIP big man.

Hi from New Zealand. Jonahs people came from Tonga. He was such a nice guy and a legend on the field. RIP Jonah. Thanks for the post, Aroha.

Kia ora. The Haka is what grabbed my attention about rugby the next thing I saw about it was Jonah. I’ve been an All Blacks fan ever since. I of course did not know at first of their storied history. I’m currently wearing an All Blacks shirt and beanie. Love the sport, massive respect to Aotearoa’s teams and the amazing culture as well. The Dallas Cowboy's offered him a multi million dollar contract and he turned it down to continue to play for club and country. The man was and will always be the absolute GOAT of rugby.

Yeah. In rubgy the ball isn't allowed to go forward out of your hands. So if you pass it forward or drop in forward in a tackle, it's essentially a fumble and it's a scrimmage to opposing team.

Jonah never played to his full potential. He only had one working kidney but he was a tank. Incredibly nice guy too. I once got run over trying to tackle him, then after he scored the try and he walked back and helped me up saying, "Nice try, have another go later". He said it in a joking manner but I had to leave the field with an injury. I'm 6'4" and was 120kg at the time, but man he hit hard. I would have hated to play him if he was 100%. And that was just a local club game.

All Blacks had a noticeable increase in tries/touchdowns during his years but they had a few HoF scorers then.

There are actually short rugby players that are also exceptional. Just check Faf de Klerk and Antoine Dupont, both 1m75.

Jonah was born with nephritis (?) bad kidney's. It affected his fitness, how much more powerful would he have been if he had ever been fit. That is what killed him. It was chronic illness

When you knock the ball out of someone's hands, it IS like a fumble if it goes forward. That is the main reason for calling a scrum. But rugby makes big use of the concept of "advantage". So if Red drop the ball, blue can pick it up and play with it. If they don't get any advantage from that, the ref will stop play and give Blue a scrum.

Far better than anyone else, but as far as I knew….was respectful. I think the Dallas cowboys were offering a contract? But that would mean he could no longer play the game of rugby or for the country of New Zealand he both loved.

if they drop the ball, fumble as you say, as long as the ball doesn't travel forward!, it can go backward or to either side is okay, play on

  • @JusCals

Fur sure legit tackles. Jonah was freekishly good with technique. If you drop the ball backwards...play on. Drop the ball foward... scrum forms with the scrum feed going to the opposition, who feeds usually gets the ball out of the scrum, usually. That last clip where he beats one, recovers, beats the second, where he is unbalanced quite a bit, then only uses 2 steps of recovery to get set before running over the third guy(victum) and remember almost all the people he is playing against are quality players who know how to tackle and have a plan to try and nullify him, baaahahah not today guys.

Check out Aussie rugby league, it's similar to what you are seeing here but this is "union" much more scrappy and less structured. We've had a few Aussies that played league here and have signed with NFL teams, because of their kicking ability, speed and defensive game.
