    Brah, this montage does not do him justice..
    Jonah Lomu is the first Superstar of Rugby! Became the youngest AB at 19years old.
    1.96m tall / 6ft 4
    119kgs / 260lbs
    100m in 10.80s / 109yrds
    The Greatest no. 11
    Jonah was the reason why rugby went professional, before him Rugby was still played by players who had 9-5 jobs, in NZ at least, we a country of 4million. He was offered a 10m NFL contract think back in the 2000s. He turned it down cos he liked rugby, but in a documentary, you realize, cos he was aware of his Health Issues at the time and wanted to just focus on rugby as long as he can to play for that Black Jersey. He retired in the 2000s too.. just goes to show that if he looked like he was at his peak.. maate

    Before Jonah Lomu there were not many Pacific Islanders in international rugby. After he made his stance with the All Blacks he paved the way, opened a portal, for islanders to flood the scene in international rugby. Jonah is the OG of all the number 11s in All Black history with due respect to those blind side wingers before him. Mad kudos to your reaction and Kia Ora from NZ toko

    The NFL concept of offence and defence does not apply to rugby, the side who has the ball is on the offensive, the other than could be described as being on the defensive, but unlike NFL, in rugby, barring substitution through injury, all the players on both sides play for the whole game, two halves of 40 minutes, oh and by the way, NFL football is a derivative of Rugby Football which can trace its roots back to medieval England, although modern rugby rules date back to1823,, whereas the NFL dates back to 1920

    The Pacific Islanders have changed the rugby game - running rugby in the Southern Hemisphere. - They are strong, fast and agile. But Northern hemisphere rugby is more technical - they slow the game down and kick goals rather than scoring with exciting attacking tries.

    To answer your question, Jonah started when rugby in 1994 was still Ameteur, hence the players were smaller, and so was Jonah Comparatively. Some, but not all, of this footage was pre profrossionalism. After 1995 Rugby went professional and it took around 2-3 years for most international teams to adjust. It made no difference, the size of players late 90's early 2000's when Jonah was still playing are no different compared with today, everytime Jonah got the ball something special happened and he was trucking both forwards and backs during that era. A good example to back this point, the wallaby backline in that era had some legendary players of their own, all 100kg+(220+ pounds, note these are backs, not forwards who are bigger) which is a big backline even by today's standards, and Jonah trucked them all regardless of size. A 125kg+ gym junked powerful prop? Jonah still trucked them all the time and made it look easy. He was a freak of nature, although polynesians in general have an insane genepool and produce very fast, powerful athletes all the time. The Tuilagi brothers, Julian Savea, Lote Tiqiri, Rupeni Caucau, Josua Tuisova, Maika Sivo, Matu Vatuvei and many others, the list is very extensive. Jonah though still was head and shoulders above the rest, a once in a life time Athlete.

Then Jonah comes along starts running people over.. he dominanted for years.. then other rugby franchises caught on an started recruiting big boys for the Winger position.. now you see it in the modern game.. big boys on the wing running people over.. Jonah run the 100m at 10.8sec at 120kgs.. that video don't do him justice..there are better videos of him running over the whole team.. lol.. true story.. he became an ALL BLACK at 19 at that time the youngest to ever do it and at a time where racism against Polynesian playing for the Allblacks was political.. • @docgonzales
      @docgonzales 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Rugby went professional because rugby league had become a much better spectacle, it's as simple as that. Lomu may have ended up in league for the money if union didnt go pro, they all did back then , Inga Tuigamala did that just the year before Lomu turned up, Union players were playing and having day jobs, , league guys were full time pro's getting payed huge amounts of cash and their physicality and skill increased as a result. The big TV money was there to be taken but only if Union went pro, the Murdochs were not gonna throw money at part timers, so the Union bosses decided to move with the times. Lomu may have been the bait to hook the tv money i'll say. As for small fast guys, dont give into the myth, John Kirwan was 110kg 6'4" winger in the 1987 world cup, Inga the winga was heavier than Jonah in the early 90's playing same position, plenty of wingers over 220 pounds back then playing League back then as well.

      @talkaboutit9200 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@docgonzales and Jonah did that..Inga was good but not ruthless like Jonah.. Jonah put Rugby on the Map.. the players that switched codes to league were mud anyways.. No one has done what Jonah has done on the world stage.. yeah there were others after him.. but they never lasted.. Jonah was killing it.. then he got sick.. and the rest you know..

    • @docgonzales
      @docgonzales 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      TalkAboutIt Lomu is still the biggest fastest guy ever, no doubt , even today he would flatten everyone. As for the league influence, in mid '95 rugby league in australia had become so big a money earner that two billionaires fought for the tv rights, with Murdoch starting his own comp when he didnt get the ok by the ARL board, as a result pay packets went thru the roof in a bidding war for players, and suddenly union players were getting flooded with a million a year offers when they might have taken home 50k thru under table payments. By the world cup in 95 guys like Joost V. W were serious about switching, Jonah as well. Union officials knew they were gonna see an exodus of players to League after the WRC of 95 so they had to become pro or see the game gutted. As for the union guys snapped up pre 96 to play league they definitely werent mud, Jonathon Davis was amazing, too many aussies to mention, the British Lions of 97 was chock full of ex league players that came back after their fat contracts had run out, Scott Gibbs, Quinell, Alan Bateman, John Bentley, Allan Tait, those guys brought a professionalism to the squad that only helped.

    • @mitchand9
      @mitchand9 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@talkaboutit9200 Rugby had already started to become professional building up to 95 world cup. Jonah gave good reason why with his WC performance but he wasn't the sole reason it switched.
      Also Jonahs sickness didn't happen after. You people only found out after as due to his celebrity status as after 95, it would've been hard to keep from the public eye.
      As for Inga, well he was a beast in his own right. Had been Jonahs size, he would have been no different. Very rare you'll find the switch from union to league in the prime of that players career which is why you could call them mud. Not all though.

But Jonah's 60 to 70% elevated the game to unseen heights and was far better than everyone elses 100% of his time. He has inspired and will continue to inspire generations to come in many sports not just rugby. In a time when the game was full of so many legends he was the worlds stand out player. Teams tried to develop game plans to try and shut him down. His time from standing start over 10m was 0.8 seconds.

    Look rules were more relaxed towards the defending side, so more dangerous tackles were allowed. But how would try a high tackle on him? He was huge. He would shrug you off like you weren't there. Today a lot of guys are bigger than the average payer from then. But the size speed combo, still makes a good player. For sure in my top 5. Maybe nr 2. Only because the rules of today inhibits players. So some need to concentrate more on tactics than just brute force and speed.

THE ALL BLACKS are the most dominant team in sports history and johna is the most dominant ALL BLACK . 5:14. Bro it was tougher then , less rules around safety you could pretty much do wrestling moves on people, I played in the same place at the same time and the same position as Jonah lomu, it was the most physical rugby there was because it was south Auckland

    you could not say back then that it was easier or harder as back then yes the rules were less strict but now the game is more built up in a way that the training is different so the contact is higher, as stronger men on the playing field, this man beast tho RIP big love

    Jonah was the youngest All Black
    His vertical leap is one of the highest recorded ever
    One day at Counties Stadium he hit a guy so hard we feared for his life
    After that tackle he changed his technique to a drag the man down style so as not to endanger another life
    A fact not well known, after matches in New Zealand you could run onto the playing field and approach players as they walked off
    He was so popular that sometimes he was still trying to get off the field up to an hour after the game had finished
    They had to change the rule so nobody could come onto the field, it become that dangerous
    All his achievements with severe medical issues
    I remember where i was when i heard the news of his death
    Grown men wept as i did, as i am writing this
    Simply THE BEST

    Bro the game has gone soft back in his day beastmode 100%. Some people says players in our days are more conditioned and they are right but jonah still would have done the same thing put it this way 120kgs 100metrer 10.6sec I believe and took advantage of everything part of his talent do for me then and now this guys is on the mountain by himself.

  • @juniordonnelly9894

    To put this into context - all the guys you’ve reviewed- revered Lomu and wouldn’t stand a chance against him. Ingles idolised him. He was bigger and faster than any of them. Faster than any WR and bigger than any TE

  • @rittherugger160
    @rittherugger160 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Much about the game has changed since back then.
    Defenses had more of a chance to turn over the ball and so they committed more people to breakdowns. So did the offense. Now that so few people participate in rucks the running lanes are clogged up to the point that World Rugby is looking to change the Laws in a way to get people out of the defensive line.
    Back then the primary objective was to stay on your feet. Not so today. Now ball carriers fight to go to ground because they are better off being tackled than on their feet.
    Not only that but the very definition of "on your feet" has been changed to allow people to do things that they weren't allowed to do back then.
    Since professionalism all of the 'dark arts' of forwards have disappeared from the game to the point that they cannot even do things as basic as a scrum on the first attempt.
