Simple forced card! Nothing to see here! Penn should have know this was the way (old tech) when he saw the different signature which was conveniently not shown and edited out for the show so you dont go HEY THATS DIFFERENT! Also how could he not see the deck switch?
The most important thing is how Penn was mesmerised that he just wanted to see the cards and fan them out for himself instead of the crowd. It's been 3 years since he passed away and I'm still watching the video and remembering how happy he was watching all yours video, entertaining him and wanting to be better at what he loved. thank you from the bottom of my heart

It's always hard to tell because Penn's such a showman (and not in a bad way), but that really feels like one of the few times you see a genuine moment of, "hey, wait a minute..." on his face.
@@jefpearlman9686 I completely agree with the sentiment here. Sometimes I’m pretty sure he’s ginning it up for the audience. Even his outsized reaction to Kostya’s first trick on the show felt a little hammed up… even though I’m sure he was genuinely impressed, cuz that one’s another pretty damn fine trick to have happen right before your eyes. But this one, maybe cuz it was early enough in the series?, really does feel genuine.
I've already seen this more than 10 times, it still amazes me like the first time. The trick is great, but it becomes awesome when you do it. You are a fun guy to watch Shawn.
Best magician I've seen so far, not only do I have respect for his magic, but the fact he doesn't spoil if he fooled them or not in the title of the video is another level. Great work! So many other contestants spoil if they've fooled them or not, what a shame to spoil it before you click the video.
Of all of the P&T shows I've watched, the street magicians, and even a friend who does card magic, this has to be my favourite trick of them all. It seems so simple, yet such an impact. Part of me wants to know how it's done so much, but another part of me just loves being amazed.
I was fortunate, when I was in my teens, to see Shawn Farquhar live. I was on a cruise and went to the theatre for an evening and was floored at his natural he comes across in every trick, great or small... and now I can never hear Sting's "Shape of My Heart" the same way again. He's really as personable, charming, and a stand-up all around guy, as he seems but one of the things I love best about him is his impeccable sense of timing and narrative as a showman. It's the reason I never tire of watching his videos and have been hoping to find time to take the family on a trip just to see him perform some of his greatest artistry. Shawn, best wishes to you and yours and I hope to see one of your shows in person before too long.
I still come back to this performance from time to time to rewatch. It’s a fantastic trick, and the performance and interplay between everyone involved makes it that much better.
Shawn, I had the wonderful opportunity years ago to be on a cruise where you were performing - your last tour with that ship if I recall correctly, and was absolutely MESMERIZED by your performances. You're a master of the art, sir. Fool Us is easily my favorite show on TV because it both celebrates the craft of illusion, as well as gives amateur analysts like me at opportunity to try to break down a performance - then be filled with wonder at a display that we can't figure even the beginnings of how something could be done. Thank you for doing what you do, and I'll always treasure that dumb little signed DVD of yours that I so happily paid for all those years ago.
I've worked it out. It's clear to me that you possess unmatched skill and are incredibly adept at what you do. That's how you do it. Genuinely one of the best tricks I've seen.
@@dudleylandsberg1747 This is a complete guess, but I think there are three swaps, pushing it off into read more: 1 2 3 4 5 One swap before Penn inserts the card. This can be done so the card can be inserted "face-up" into the proper place. Probably a swap in-between everything, so he can have time to wrap the deck. If he swapped while in someone's hands, that's obvious, and if he DIDN'T swap, he'd have to insert the card "through the seal" (the other end is usually a fold, which wouldn't let him insert in the middle. Third: Swap before inserting the deck into hands. The deck looks normal (you can see a double-backed logo in the video), but pretending to pull out the joker is a necessary step. It hides at least the top from sight. I think they knew part of it, as they they mention "we saw A move". They didn't see any more. Maybe it could be done with two swaps (I'm trying to think of how you'd get it unshuffled while hidden, swapping once after they insert, so you have time to wrap it for the second). That's part of why the guy goes through the conversation: 'if I did it how you think I would've, I could show you *a* sorted deck, but how about...'. That's why Penn was agreeing, right up until he was like "oh no, he got me"
Just an amazing performance!! It was such a pleasure to have a discussion with you on my TH-cam channel. It was nice to know a little bit about the show behind the scenes 😎
I keep coming back to this performance and each time I'm equally amazed. Years ago I happened to be the close up camera tech when Shawn performed his "shape of my heart" routine at a magic convention on a Norwegian cruise ship and even though I was only a few metres away with a high resolution camera I could understand how he could manipulate those cards so buttery smooth. When he pointed to his mouth at the end of the trick, I raised the camera for the final shot and I almost dropped a very expensive broadcast Sony cam because I couldn't believe what I was looking at. During the trick in this perormance above, you can see Penn is watching every move like a hawk and as he said at the end, he saw the deck switch but getting the signed card in the new deck was insane. There are only two possible scenarios - either Shawn has sold his soul in exchange for superhuman skills or, well actually that's all I have . . . .
The deck switch is actually him switching from a deck of cards to the brand new sealed deck with 1 joker card on top to make it look like a full deck or cards. The deck has a slit in the bottom for him to slide in the card, which he then covers back up somehow. Then it's placed into penns hand and he removes the top card.
Great tricks are great, but stage presence pushes it above and beyond, and why I love this performance is all because of your stage presence! Makes me laugh every time!
Such a great presentation. You and Penn have such great chemistry together. All tree times you have been on the show have been hilarious. The fact you then tie them all together was pure genius.
Now I’m even madder than I was the first time I saw this trick, because like Penn and Teller, I can’t figure out the resealing of the deck. Now that I’ve seen your 3rd appearance, I’m mad because penn told you how it’s done, and I still don’t know how you did it!!! Good for you!!!
I have come back and watched this from time to time whenever I happen to be watching Fool Us. It is an absolute classic. It seems so simple and straightforward. There is very little flash and the patter feels very natural an unobtrusive. The sequence where you suggest outcomes to Penn, and his esxalating reactions to them, are just perfect. And, as you said to Wossy, most of it being in Penn's hands just puts it over the top.
So I watched this extraordinary magic again and I think it gets better each time 😮 love the look on Teller’s face, even Penn trying to tone down the amazing experience he’s having had to be impressed 😅totally awesome

Just got home from your Hidden Wonders show. It was Amazing! Definitely recommending my friends and anyone who wants to have a great time. Thanks for the great memories, Shawn!
I gotta say Shawn, the look of surprise on Penns face when you loaded that fresh deck in his hand was truly satisfying. Still one of the ballsiest things I've ever seen on Fool Us.
Shawn is one of my all time favourite performers. Because he has such a laid back chilled personality his magic seems all the more special. Ive seen too many magicians who try and give the mean and moody exterior, for me magic is supposed to make people smile so when somebody as warm as Shawn does it, he adds another dimension to the illusion. Hope i can get to Canada one day to visit your theatre buddy.
The craziest part about the trick for me was getting the 7 in place. If it was a classic piece of spreading, it would be comparatively simple, but I'm pretty sure it was not. Obviously you practiced alot with index cards as a kid since playing cards are too expensive, and even though I really have no idea, I know that the way you used the skills you learned as a kid with those index cards has to be the most creative way I've ever seen. I don't mean just getting it in, but getting it in place, although just getting it in was nuts as well.
He knows from the switched deck how many cards to count to slide the signed card in its correct place. That's the great part of the trick. Performing it under pressure with Penn watching close up is what makes it even more impressive.
I've been rewatching this clip for years, including before it has to be reposted. I don't think there's ever been such a look of pure joy and surprise on Penn's face or a better happy-dance when they got fooled
This has always been my favorite trick done on the show and I love your personality. I had forgotten your name and wasn't even looking for magic tricks, but your season 3 appearance came across my recommend so I just had to subscribe.
Every time I see this video, I shake my head at how well done it is. You can see a move here and there, but the magic is that none of those individual moves actually add up to the full effect. Amazing!
This is still by far one of the most polished, memorising and magical effects I've seen. The look on Penn's face when he sees the deck re sealed is like he's just experienced magic for the first time again. How many people could do that to him? I have wanted you to release this for years and years but with TH-cam the way it is now, I think you should keep it secret. There will be too many bad tutorials trying to teach it which will ruin it. I will just live with the joy of never knowing the exact method.
Such an inspiration. Thank you for all the entertaining performances. I wish you would do some tutorials on how to make a pizza, and i would show you how to disappear a pizza in my stomach :))
This may not be the most sophisticated trick on this show, but you are definitaly one of the more entertaining acts on fool us. your energy is just awesome to watch, jokes on point, really nice performance!
👏 Shawn! You tricky son of s gun you! Here's my guess on how you did it: 1. The original 'sealed' deck he takes out to start the trick has already been opened. He does something to the 7 of diamonds (maybe shortens it? OR crimp it) so that he could force it on Penn to sign. 2. He does a deck switch to take out the gimmicked deck that has been carefully cut open at the bottom which has 2 flaps in 2 positions. One under the 6 of diamonds and one above the 8 of diamonds, leaving a gap for him to place the signed 7 of diamonds into so it would be in the correct position. He uses a joker or other card I don't remember to hide the gimmicked deck under Penns hands. After inserting the 7 he pressed the gimmicked (probably glued) box shut including the cellophane. 3. Now here's the best part and how he fooled Penn. Shawn does a SECOND deck switch or rather 'BOX SWITCH' when he reaches into his right pocket to take out the extra cards. He leaves the gimmicked box in his pocket, and takes out a normal box to hand to PENN to examine. THAT'S what fooled Penn. He never was able to examine the gimmicked box. So that's it. What do you think? Am I close?.
I think you're right it is a force, and I think you are correct there are shenanigans happening very late in this act, but I think the exact order of it you have mixed up. I don't know what the etiquette is around here about actually guessing close to the mark so I'll stay vague. I think the very obvious deck switch at 2:34 was meant to be seen by Penn, so that a much later and much more outrageously bold deck switch would go unnoticed. There's a sort of standard way to do this trick and the early deck switch is meant for Penn to think that is how it is going to be done. But it isn't done that way: the actual method is much more simple and devious.
So this is where the mystery began for Penn and Teller. Just knowing what happens in the second and third appearances makes me cherish the first time. One of cleanest routines I’ve seen on this show
This is incredible! Definitely one of my favorite magic performances of all time. Keep it up and I hope you're safe and healthy during this crazy time! I know watching this definitely made MY day better! Thank you!

I have been coming back to this act for years, it's one of my favorites, and it's the first thing I think of when someone mentions ''Penn and Teller''
It holds a really special place in my heart
I saw this video for the first time many years ago with my dad (who was also a magician) since then we have seen it many times and the reaction was always the same, just... wow. It's been 3 years since he passed away and I'm still watching the video and remembering how happy he was watching all yours video, entertaining him and wanting to be better at what he loved. thank you from the bottom of my heart
Thank you for sharing this story with me and my subscribers.
Still my favourite card trick I've seen. The presentation is charming, the effect is powerful, and the amount of annoyance on Penn's face is just priceless!
Shawn's smirking face at 5:01 is just priceless.
I think he already knew at that point that Penn had no idea how he did it.
Penn immediately said "wow" when he finished, u dont see that everyday, this video deserves 1M views, great act, love it
Watched this now for the 10th time, I can watch this 10 times more. What a fun presentation and Penn’s face even more often!
I said ti before and I'll say it again, Thanks for the rewatches... my kid's in University and I can use the cash, lol. ;-)
Penn’s reaction at 3:37 is still my favorite moment ever from Fool Us.
5:06 is one of my favorites. Jaw. Dropped.
Thats what i tell my wife all the time lmao but anyway a beast perfomance cheers Shawn
That's a funny line... glad you liked the performance.
Where have I been these 2 years without knowing him?! This man gotta be one of the most charismatic and nice magicians I've ever seen
Thank you for the kind compliments.
Look up his "Shape of My Heart" routine. Enchanting.
These are the kinds of acts where I wish Johnathan was still co-hosting Fool Us.
He was way better than that girl.. Humour on point
I really enjoy Shawn's Fool Us videos. His delivery, style, and sense of humor is top tier.
4:37 "Someone who is a professional in show business would have done that automatically" 😂 ❤
OMG to see Pen's face when Shawn reveals the sealed deck inside his hands is priceless!!! Good job!!!!
woah this is so old there's not even a trophy, yet this guy keeps fooling them.. it should be your show by now
He only fooled them twice. The third time, they were onto him.
@@Steve-fe4lq Shawn actually said they got most of their guesses wrong, but he went along with it anyways cause one was kinda close.
Of all of the P&T shows I've watched, the street magicians, and even a friend who does card magic, this has to be my favourite trick of them all. It seems so simple, yet such an impact. Part of me wants to know how it's done so much, but another part of me just loves being amazed.
Shawn is a true rock-star of magic. This and Kostya Kimlat (first routine) are tied for the first spot, IMHO.
The Roadrunner Cull is just magical!
OMG I REMEMBER SEEING THIS WHEN IT FIRST GOT POSTED ON TH-cam!!!!! Omg thank you! You’re absolutely incredible!!!!
TH-cam has been a mess for a while. But anyway, I'm glad I got back here to see the amazing trick again.
I've worked it out. It's clear to me that you possess unmatched skill and are incredibly adept at what you do. That's how you do it. Genuinely one of the best tricks I've seen.
How does he do it
@@dudleylandsberg1747
This is a complete guess, but I think there are three swaps, pushing it off into read more:
1
2
3
4
5
One swap before Penn inserts the card.
I had a blast chatting with you. For those that didn't see your video: th-cam.com/video/h9Roig5wFt4/w-d-xo.html
This is the fines card trick on this show. So complete and self-contained. It's perfect.
There are only two possible scenarios - either Shawn has sold his soul in exchange for superhuman skills or, well actually that's all I have . . . .
Thanks for the great memory... I have been to Norway a number of times... but I recall our night working together!
@@TheGameCommentatorBut that doesnt explain how card in right place when they show it u cant slid card that precise.
This is so amazing I've seen this so many times sucks that TH-cam took it down
Great tricks are great, but stage presence pushes it above and beyond, and why I love this performance is all because of your stage presence! Makes me laugh every time!
Such a great presentation. You and Penn have such great chemistry together. All tree times you have been on the show have been hilarious. The fact you then tie them all together was pure genius.
Although it makes me feel old, I very much appreciate the reupload ;)
I feel old looking at the young me!
IMHO the best and most epic card trick I've ever seen. Don't know how it's done and I don't want to know. Brilliant!
I just LOVE Teller's face when he has no fkn idea of what just happened. Hahaha he will always have that eye glow whenever new magic is in the house.
I took a lot of time, rewinded, repeated, followed details... I've caught something fishy, but the rest just blews my mind.
Love it!
I can't stop coming back to watch this performance. Absolutely brilliant stuff Shawn!
Every now and then I come back to this video. Never fails to amaze me.
I love when Penn says: “Oh that would be a fine trick!”. Then you know he got them.
I never tire of watching this bit. The way Teller's mouth was hanging open and Shawn's genuine happiness for fooling them was sublime.
So I watched this extraordinary magic again and I think it gets better each time 😮 love the look on Teller’s face, even Penn trying to tone down the amazing experience he’s having had to be impressed 😅totally awesome
I’m not a magician but seeing this show so much I see everything I saw the deck switch, but how he got his card inside is beyond me. Great trick
This guy is just adorable. I saw his more recent one first and then this one pops up. It cute seeing where hes grown from and what was a call back. He is just super charming.
Rumors said that Penn still doesn't know how the heck Shawn did that until this day in 2021
This my favorite trick. You've got Shawns lovely personality, great comedic timing, a seemingly simple yet complicated trick and Penns reaction to top it off. Absolutely wonderful. One of the few tricks I never want to know how its done.
This is one of my favorite tricks ever on this show. It comes to mind often as does Penn's reaction "Oh that would be a fine trick" haha. Nicely done sir.
This is my Favourite trick to watch. Pens face is like a kids the 1st time they've seen a trick and I LOVED it.
I have lost count of the number of times I have watched this trick, it is fabulous. Absolutely LOVE your stage presence as well, you appear so relaxed and appear to be having tons of fun.
Penn’s reaction is the most priceless thing I’ve ever seen. He looks like someone who just watched their first magic trick.
It has taken me literally years to finally see the move that Penn and Teller saw, and it’s only made me love the trick more. Seeing how amazingly clean and effortless the move was is just a testament to how good Shawn really is. I’ve watched that part back a dozen times now and it’s just amazing.
Thanks
One of the few tricks that stay in my memory and I actively search for to look back at.
This was by far my favourite performance on Fool Us. It was so entertaining, jokes were perfectly timed, and ultimately fooled Pen and Teller. Absolutely amazing
This was the first act ever filmed for the series. They had a made a pilot quite sometime before, but I was the first guy on the first day, so it was just an honour to be invited onto their stage.
@@ShawnFarquhar the very first? One of the most impressive acts of the show was the first one to be recorded? Now I'm even more amazed! I love this routine and admire the courage needed to do this in Penn's hands instead of Jonathan's
What a trick. Played it so cool. And right in front of Penn, using his own hands. Big balls sir. We salute you!
This was the first magic trick in this show that made me go: "WOOOOOW". Great trick indeed! Still great and one of the best after so many years!
It was also the first trick of the show
This trick is simultaneously the most amazing trick I've ever seen and also the easiest to figure out (sorta) on rewatch. Great job
I've watched this so many times already and will watch it again 😁
Just got home from your Hidden Wonders show. It was Amazing!
Definitely recommending my friends and anyone who wants to have a great time.
Thanks for the great memories, Shawn!
Thanks for coming out to play and hope to see you again one day.
I gotta say Shawn, the look of surprise on Penns face when you loaded that fresh deck in his hand was truly satisfying.
Still one of the ballsiest things I've ever seen on Fool Us.
absolutely one of the best Penn reactions ever, nicely done Mr Shawn Farquhar ☯☯☯
I hope you get to visit Hidden Wonders as well...
I come back and watch this from time to time and it's purity remains delightful as ever.
@jcasey6843 but the deck was in a box with seal
I've been rewatching this clip for years, including before it has to be reposted. I don't think there's ever been such a look of pure joy and surprise on Penn's face or a better happy-dance when they got fooled
This has always been my favorite trick done on the show and I love your personality.
I had forgotten your name and wasn't even looking for magic tricks, but your season 3 appearance came across my recommend so I just had to subscribe.
My name is easy to forget! Thanks for subscribing...
@@ShawnFarquhar aren't you that prince in the Shrek movies lord Farquhar
Every time I see this video, I shake my head at how well done it is. You can see a move here and there, but the magic is that none of those individual moves actually add up to the full effect. Amazing!
This is still by far one of the most polished, memorising and magical effects I've seen. The look on Penn's face when he sees the deck re sealed is like he's just experienced magic for the first time again. How many people could do that to him?
I have wanted you to release this for years and years but with TH-cam the way it is now, I think you should keep it secret. There will be too many bad tutorials trying to teach it which will ruin it. I will just live with the joy of never knowing the exact method.
the method is simple, he made a deal with the devil
you could tell simply from penn's facial expressions he had NO IDEA whatsoever what hpapened.
Funniest and BEST Magician I've ever seen. The man is so good it scares me.
Such an inspiration. Thank you for all the entertaining performances. I wish you would do some tutorials on how to make a pizza, and i would show you how to disappear a pizza in my stomach :))
Shawn's pizza tossing tutorial! Coming soon
@@ShawnFarquhar Not yet released but we are all eagerly waiting
I think the part when Penn says the "wow, that's fabulous" is probably all the trophy you need.
This is still the greatest card trick I've ever seen. Well done Shawn! Don't tell me how its done.
Thank you!
I'm staying safe and sane...
