      @@Chuckiele the nut was split in the middle under the tin cup. When he uncovers the nut he does a good job of hiding it, but not good enough for the close up. That is when he slipped the palmed pea into the nut. You can tell the nut is split by the way he holds it together even when setting it on the cloth. He doesn't release the nut until it's covered. He then really tries to smash the nut so that it breaks in more than one spot to not show the split down the middle.

    • @falcore91
      @falcore91 3 ปีที่แล้ว +394

      I suspect the Doc expects half of the participants to do the same thing, with that embarrassed moment at not being able to follow directions and afraid they ruined the trick. In fact I bet it is why he asks them to put their finger on the cup to begin with.

      @@falcore91 It also puts a LOT of focus on those cups and whether or not the trick has been compromised, immediately before the moment where he puts the pea in the walnut, and beneath the cup. It's like mental misdirection. It basically keeps you from being complacent so that when he goes to pull the wallet out, you're not like "uh oh, he's doing something weird now...." the whole trick is full of odd, distracting moments. Thats why P&T were saying there were so many little things they'd never seen before....they weren't sure what to keep track of or which parts were actually relevant to his method.

    I love how every single magician on this entire series has the shaky hands. It has to be super nerve wracking to perform for penn and teller. It just shows how great this show is.

    • @davidappelgate320
      @davidappelgate320 3 ปีที่แล้ว +55

      While absolutely true, I can't help but think that shaky hands would actually make it a bit harder for someone to notice a move. If they're always making those little movements, it's really hard to tell what's nerves and what's concealing some sleight of hand.

    • @arnabkar8792
      @arnabkar8792 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think he kept it shaky to imply that he's not taking the pea out of the shell like he did in the first two instances, like lifting with two fingers and leaving it at a distance to make it clear to them that it's not in his hands.

    3:59 He drops the pea onto his lap
    4:38 He put the pea inside the new shell (which probably has a hole in it) on his lap while he reaches for the wallet (a distraction)

They used to explain these rules in the early episode, but they stopped. I guess they assumed everyone would know by then. This kind of magic is my absolute favorite. No big props, just real, honest to goodness skill. It reminds me a lot of Paul Gertner’s act, which I like a lot too.
    We know that a lot of it is slight of hand, but the fact that we can’t actually pick up on it is what makes it so cool. It’s also great to do it right in front of Penn and Teller.

    -Knuckles are tucked in on his last 3 fingers for holding the pea in between the fingers.
    -using quick slight of hand while moving the shells around, he slightly lifts the shells releasing the pea then catching with his tucked fingers. when the pea is released its always directly behind the shell and caught immediately by his fingers. hard to see through cameras even in slow mo.
    -for the last trick he released the pea from the shell/glass right before moving it to the front corner. he then has the pea in hand till he puts its in the closed shell under the table before grabbing the wallet. he then moves the silver cup to the back corner places the closed shell that he pulled from underneath the table under the cup. with said pea inside.

    You know, I've spent the better part of 2 days looking at Penn and Teller Fool Us routines...
    Some segments are better than others, but what really sets some of the performances apart aren't whether or not they fool Pen or Teller, which is usually great to see in its own right. But rather, you know you see a great magician when they are genuinely passionate about what they do and are excited to be on a stage to share it with two other magicians they clearly admire and respect. Just look at him celebrate when he wins the trophy!
    I don't care very much for the egotistical types who are looking for glory, and this guy strikes me as a seasoned, well-adjusted performer, who has a great sense of humor, and a great act; even prompting Penn (one of the loudest and most refined stage personas I've seen in magic) to state "what a great routine, great routine" at 9:10. Cheers, Doc!

    This was definitely one of my favorite performances from this show. I knew the moves just like P&T but the charm was what made this so good. Then the pea in the nut. I've seen objects in impossible places before but the fact that it was signed and the load was so clean made this great. I really loved this. I think many people now days get this feeling that if it's not some super big thing like a levitation or whatnot that more modern magicians have made popular, that it's not mystifying. This was probably one of the best performances I’ve seen on the show; not because the trick is a personal favorite (which it it), but because of the way Doc connected to Penn/Teller, the audience, and even the viewers at home. I think the coolest part of this routine is that you did pretty much everything you could to turn the crux of "knowing" the trick into seeing exactly when and how that specific pea gets into that specific walnut.
    It cuts down the universe of possible ways you did the trick so much that you're basically throwing down the gauntlet and saying, "Was my sleight of hand good enough to fool Penn and Teller?"

    Here’s my guess on how he did the last trick! It’s actually really simple.
    At 3:44 he uses sleight of hand to take the pea. Underneath the table is a secret compartment where the nut already is, most likely in two halves and pre-glued for easy assembly. At 4:37 he hides his hands for a few seconds and puts the pea inside the nut. Then at 4:51 he moves the shot glass closer to him, and as it switches hands he places the nut underneath it.

    I saw the flash at 3:55 which was hidden from Teller by the metal cup and hidden from Penn by your left hand.
    That being said, you totally got me on it actually being inside a full shell.
    ***APPLAUSE***
    Edit: After 2nd watch... I saw the removal of it after the flash and the replacement into the metal cup as well as the use of the wallet. Great sleight of hand! I could never pull that off, especially with Penn & Teller sitting there and being on national TV.
    WOW!

      I think most of us who are into magic aren't fooled by cups and balls. We at least have an idea of how it was done haha. The pea being in the shell fooled us all.

      @@rishimakhanlal8905 the pea in the shell was the easiest part, there's a whole in the shell hidden by his thumb

      @Burger Chris Yeah, it's almost as if magic tricks rely on some deception or something.

    The thing I loved most about this show was that to fool was not ever about bragging rights, it was creating something amazing that your peers/heroes/etc couldn't catch- you just forwarded magical/performance knowledge.
    To "win" only developed magic in the most beautiful way.
    I'm sure that giving away the"trophy" was not the whole point of this show.
    And even if you didn't "win"... We loved your performance Your artistry
    Such a beautiful show.

    Crazy good slight of hand. For the first round I had to watch it in slow motion more than once to see how he did that. Didn't even bother with the rest. Well played sir.
