In case no one else explains, the nob at the back is designed to cut the ink flow, which makes it safer to carry around, or if you take it on a flight wth differing atmospheric pressures. There is a smaller reservoir in the fore grip (can't recall the proper name) that you can fill and then close it off, or just leave it flat open if you need a lot of ink. Shut it off when not using it or it can get drippy. It's a beautiful pen, btw. As for flex, it takes a fair amount of pressure to spring a steel nib. Please don't worry about it.
My birthday tomorrow, I am turning 51. I swear time is speeding up. For all those with a list of dreams that you plan to do in the future - get on with it, now.
Yep. Don't waste your money partying or spending it on useless crap - that is money you will never see again. If you want a home of your own, allocate a percentage of your wages every week, without fail, to your savings.
Love your videos, Peter. Watching your coffee slurping, ramble-filled doodling is a great way to relax and has inspired me to get back into doodles of my own. Thank you for that.
Before I watched your videos I thought the way that I drew random lines and such was just something I did, cause everyone else would say I wasn’t really making art and etc. but I’ve been watching all your videos for the past week and you do exactly what I do and all your drawings are crazy awesome and it’d be awesome if I could show u some of my stuff too. But thanks for helping me know I’m not alone and teaching me a lot of unique useful material with all your videos. Thanks man
What Peter does is far more than our "doodling". Check perspective, proportion, shapes, etc. Far more to it than our random, or mine anyway. I shall speak for myself.
Peter, you seem so sincere and genuine. Plus your rambles make me smile. -havnt bought a fountain pen.. yet. I like this one, though. Keep up the good work!
After watching your last fountain pen video I spent over $50 on various cheap pens from aliexpress. Please don't give me ideas for more pens to buy. These fountain pen videos are addicting
@@palefox7212 Some good pens in that price range are the Lamy Safari/Al-Star (although not everyone likes the grip, me included), the Faber-Castell LOOM, the TWSBI Eco, and the Pilot Metropolitan
Peter I am stressed as all hell, this video was exactly what I needed. I love the way you talk and act, there’s something so relaxing about it. Thank you.
I don’t draw as much as I would like to, life gets in the way. I like to watch you draw, I am nowhere near as good as you, but watching you gives me inspiration. I think the picture looks like a satalite (sp?) that kept evolving because it looks like something that or many times people have added the newest technology right on top of the last version. Keep drawing Peter.
The clear acrylic opus 88 you have isn't designed to post the cap. It also uses a #6 nib. The normal model is a bit smaller, made from acrylic and ebonite, uses a #5 nib and the cap posts. You unscrew the tail to let ink flow. The rod inside is an ink shutoff valve. Screw it down to shut the ink flow off. This is called a Japanese eyedropper. With the valve shut, you can take the pen on a plane safely. But to write with it for more than a few sentences, you need to unscrew the tail a few turns. I have a Japanese eyedropper that my mom salvaged from a sunken Japanese battleship that had been underwater for 30 years. It needed almost nothing to start writing again. As for flexing, be careful, you can spring them (they don't bend back) if you press too hard. Not all gold nibs are soft. But you'll get a feel for what kind of limits each nib has for like variation. DO NOT PUT A SHIMMER INK IN THAT. Eyedropper pens hold so much ink that they can plug with the shimmer and cleaning it is a nightmare. One last thing, eyedropper pens have a massive ink capacity, but they can start to burp blobs of ink when they get below about 25%. So if it starts burping, refill it.
At 11:00 you said something that I will keep in mind whenever I put my pen on paper. I think it will help me break out of my little shell. Thank you Peter!
I like demonstrator pens quite a lot, though I only have a handful of them in my decent collection of FPs. This Opus 88 Koloro clear demonstrator is a really cool pen that I’m on the verge of buying soon. I reckon this particular Opus could be my second favourite demonstrator pen. My best ever remains the outstanding Conid Bulkfiller. What a fascinating video with the those intricate, amazing drawings. It takes a ton of talent to be able to do it. And with a fountain pen, to boot.
I know I'm late to the party, but I just bought my clear demonstrator with a B nib on it. I usually reach for slim pens (like the Sailor 1911 Slim or the PGS) with Japanese EF, F (and maybe when I want a broader line an M) nibs, so this is way outside my usual spectrum. It's my first Japanese-style eyedropper pen (the one-way shutoff valve makes it one). For someone with small hands, I find this a surprisingly good fit ergonomically. I also have a Picnic with an F nib and love it. I'll definitely look at the other models in their lineup. Thanks for a nice review and an interesting drawing.
Nice pen With an eye dropper filling and valve mechanism to prevent burping ( gushing out ink as air inside get expand with heat from your hand), so to control ink to pass to a small reservoir before the nib, which is a good idea.
That’s called “posting” Peter, when you put the cap on the back of the pen. It probably doesn’t post because you have to unscrew the end cap. To be able write with it.
It reminds me of my uncle and his house. He hoards a lot of things which isn’t such a bad thing because he’s actually working on getting rid of the stuff. It just looks like a bunch of things stacked on top of each other and fairy lights strung about.
Found your review sweet, particularly your refusal to read the instructions... DO try shimmery or sheening inks, they will be spectacular in that barrel, I would recommend Diamine's Shimmer Inks - there's a huge array of colours. Its a good thing this pen doesn't post as it wil be like writing or drawing with a barge-pole! Your artwork is amazing, hopefully Studio Ghibli will have snapped you up by now. Peace to you. 🙏
Just for the fun of it, I think it looks like something from either a comic book or an episode of Dr. Who or Steampunk arsenal... :) Keep up the drawing, I LOVE your vids!!
I use shimmering ink in my clear Twsbi Eco. The shimmery part of the ink settles to the bottom all the time and needs to be remixed in and doesn't shimmer in the pen, but it looks great when drawing and writing.
The knob is to release a stopper inside the pen. It's an eyedropper, so it is more prone to leaking as the air in the pen heats up in your hand, particularly as the ink gets lower. So you let ink into the section, then twist the knob again to stop it flowing. Otherwise it could leak in your pants or something like that. Old, old design, only advantage is ink capacity.
Although it does not look like it the drawing puts me in mind of the magnifying glass on a stand with the clips on it to hold whatever you are looking at

The section that you're calling the fore grip is typically known as the section. Not exactly a memorable term, is it

Spending this money was your own decision tho.
I would recommend spending $30-50 on one high quality pen next time. It will perform much better than any of the cheap pens.
