It's a pretty cool pen, like it works and everything! That said, I've only used it for a day or two, we'll have to see what happens after I've left the cap on there for a couple weeks and if that keeps the ink from gumming it up. It could be I'm just being stingy suggesting it's too expensive, but like I say in the video, this seems like a specialized tool that appeals to a specific group of people who know what they want, and if they see this, they'll know it. I do think it'll probably work well at what it does. It just probably won't be a daily user for me, since I have other pens I like more.

I’ve never used a fountain pen.
I had never heard if India ink until now.
*But* I find Peter’s voice soothing, so I will let him tell me how he feels about certain fountain pens.

If anyone was wondering the difference between India Ink and Fountain Pen ink,
India Ink is made of gum arabic (a binder) and pigments, whereas fountain pen ink is mostly just dye and water.
Gum arabic dries down sticky, and the pigments tend to be too large for the feed in a fountain pen, which is why it gets gummed up in the feed and nib. Dried out fountain pen ink generally will just reactive with water so it's far easier to clean.

    • @sarcasticcf3553

because it was used by indians and became popular in west and asia. So they used 'India' to assure the quality of the ink@@humanfirst11

It's interesting that you need water to keep India Ink from drying out in the pen, and yet once it dries its better for watercoloring over. This substance must have a mind of its own.

The real question when considering this pen is: "how much of a hard-on do you get for India ink?" India ink is pretty great. It has a certain sheening quality while offering a more intense black base color when compared to the vast majority of true fountain-pen ink. It is also far more color-fast and resistant to lifting. There are a lot of good reasons to want a pen like this. It is pricey, though.

I recently bought this same Indigraph pen. It took 3 weeks to get here in Arizona from the day that I ordered it. Mine looks a bit different than yours, my F nib looks more just like a regular nib and also the Indigragh logo looks different now with all lowercase cursive letters like an updated logo perhaps. So, since this video was posted a year ago they have obviously made a few changes to this pen. Mine also didn’t come with water pre-filled already in the reservoir like yours did when it spilled out. I just filled it myself. Easy peasy. I really do love drawing with this pen! This Indigraph is definitely one of my favorites and great for adding watercolor to your drawings. Definitely worth the money in my opinion. 👌🏻😊🖋💕

In the early years of the 20th Century, artists used *safety* fountain pens, because they were the only kind of fountain pens that could take India ink and drawing inks. These inks have gum arabic in them, which clogs the feed of a regular fountain pen.
A safety pen has a nib that retracts inside the barrel of the pen, and stays submerged in the ink while the pen is capped. When the flow got sluggish, the artists just retracted the nib, closed the pen, and let it rest for a couple of minutes, and the pen would write just fine again.
How effective are safety pens? 80 years after the end of WWI, a safety pen was found in the remains of a dead soldier. When the pen was uncapped, it wrote perfectly, the moment the nib and 80-year-old ink touched paper.

Peter how did you free the Lamy pens from the dried India ink? I have done the same in my hubris and sadly the pen remains nonfunctional.

If it makes a difference to anyone, i took a tiny piece of paper towel and soaked it in water, and then wadded it up and stuffed it into the cap of my lamy safari. I filled the pen w india ink, and after about 3 days i’m not having any problems.
We’ll see if it manages to hold up for longer than that, but as far as I’m concerned I’m saving myself the 50$+ LOL

Any follow-up? I imagine the paper towel would eventually dry out, and you would have to re-wet it?

It does seem steep for a pen but it will use any ink? Is that a real good thing. I use dip pens for most everything I have ever done so far, but a fountain pen that does it all is attractive too!

I’ve heard that letting your India ink reduce evaporate down then re filling the missing water with acetone, you can load up a technical or fountain pen.

The reason to use this kind of tool is to make thin and thick lines. If a fountain pen can work with a flexible nib, it will be a perfect thing to have.

I wonder how a TWSBI Eco would hold up with India ink? An Eco’s under $40, and I’ve had one filled for over two years without any drying up, and it started writing as soon as I put it to paper even after all that time. Of course, it was filled with regular fountain pen ink.

It is very impressive to use India ink in fountain pen. But my concern is that when you cap the pen, the ink will make the water in the reservoir, and if you change ink but forgot to change and clean the reservoir, would it clog the pen because some chemicals reaction between different India ink?

If I knew 2 years ago that this pen existed I would have never bought a regular fountain pen... Beeing waterproof and cheaper like the india ink is so much supperior to the regular fountain pen ink

There is one other type of pen that uses india ink fine, it's safety pens. There's only one modern pen that can use it, the noodlers boston safety. That pen also has an ebonite feed and can accept a vintage #2 flex nib.
We're talking with the maker of this pen on FPN and he's looking into a dip nib system a-la desiderata or flexible nib factory.

If someone leaves a comment I find funny or interesting, sometimes I check out their channel and watch something they’ve uploaded and if it’s any good, I subscribe.
I did this a while back having read a comment on one of Dr, (self-proclaimed), Draws videos and subbed to this young lady reading kids books.
I realised a couple of weeks ago, that it’s Peter’s sister! They both have very pleasant reading voices and she is so enthusiastic it’s hard not to smile at her reviews.
Anyway, I digress. Awesome review and great drawing as always and, personally, I think it’s a very nice pen. India ink is awesome so I’d be prepared to buy one.

So... have you tried to put india ink in a cheap fountain pen and just put water on the cap to test out if it works the same way? I say a cheap one just in case it gets ruined. I have tried liquid acrylic ink diluted in water on my $1 fountain pen. It works just fine if I write with the pen everyday but if I let it be for 2 weeks it gets clogged. At least it's easy to unclog. I just unassembled all parts and submerged overnight in a solution of water and a bit of bleach. Pen doesn't seem to be damaged and it's writing as normal

I didn’t know you weren’t supposed to use India ink is it just to gluey. I’ve always used India ink with quill pens. They do gunk up but I thought that was just why we stopped using those style pens. Is India only for brush? Very curious.
