I mean, it was a good try. I feel good supporting some artisan who makes pens since I love pens, here's his website by the way: www.manupropri...
I think I knew before I even ordered the pen that it wouldn't satisfy me completely. I already have everything I want in the Rotring Isograph, which is a totally different type of pen (as far as the nib goes) but if curiosity didn't kill this cat, it at least lightened its wallet. I'm still happy with the purchase of this pen, since it arrived exactly to my specifications, and it was only my own hopes and dreams that somehow spending more on a pen might mystically make it better, and it did, but only in ways that are adjacent to the things that truly matter to me, that is, how it feels to draw with it. And it's not bad to draw with, it works great, but I think no fountain pen ever will really be as satisfying to me as my Rotring Isograph, which is the peak of utilitarian line-making.

The newspaper advert said "Interesting and intelligent man searches a feelful and pretty girlfriend, between 40 and 50 years. I am 46 and have blue eyes. Call me" so you got most of it right anyway. "Gefühlsvoll" is a compound word of "feeling" and "full", so feelful is a really literal translation, there is probably a more poetic way to translate it.

2020 had a lack of in-person social interaction and overwhelming amounts of negative news shown globally. The term "unearth" is referring to "earth" as the ground. There are two definitions of "earth." There is "Earth," as the proper noun and name for our planet, and there is "earth" as the common noun that refers to the ground (of any planet). To unearth something means to bring something up from the ground. Therefore, an ancient Martian artifact and an Earth one would both be "unearthed" from their respective planets.

      So there’s earth on Mars?

    • @mr.creamiersteamiermemeier5919
      @mr.creamiersteamiermemeier5919 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@peter_draws Well, that's an interesting question because "earth" typically refers to soil. And, I'm sure as you know there's no soil on Mars, OR perhaps there may be because there is a very minor amount of water on mars? But, that brings us to the larger problem that there are two definitions of "unearth." You can say you unearthed something as you dug it up out of the ground, OR you can say you unearthed something, in the metaphorical sense, as you discovered something.

As someone who is on a fixed income, and has dove down the rabbit hole of vintage fountain pens (I'm currently working on a selection of Esterbrook pens, as they tend to be more wallet friendly, and have 33 different possibilities for nibs) I doubt that this pen, no matter how awesome it is, will ever be in my price range. That said, I can also agree with the favourite pen thing. Whilst mine isn't the same as yours, I do have preferences. With the Esterbrook pens, it's mainly the 9xxx nibs I currently have, with a strong dislike for anything extra fine in ANY pen. (I'm more of a writer than I will ever be an artist, and almost every extra fine seems too scratchy for my taste. Though I have found a couple...)
I get the block thing, even though it is more in who and what to write.
Keep up the great work, and stay safe! Thanks for sharing this with us!

You payed a fair price for the labor and material involved and got a stunning piece of art/craftmanship that is also an incredibly functional pen. Peter, just a thought...assuming your new pen allows this, have you considered swapping out the nib unit for something finer? I can't really tell from the video, but 0.35mm (your rOtring fave) is finer than a Western EF (extra fine, at 0.5mm) and a hair less fine than a Japanese EF (0.3mm). This gets a little more complicated as your Swiss manufacturer may be supplying Western nibs, but is very much aligned with Japanese pen making and as a result might favor the finer Japanese nib widths. Of course, none of this matters if the pen doesn't strike you as becoming a useful extension to boosting your creativity.
Have a wonderful safe and joyful Christmas Season Peter, and many thanks for doing what you do.

There have been those monks in medieval times who wrote and copied books. They also added these large letters at the beginning of a chapter of a book. Colorful, large and sometimes full of creativity. Today one could choose a picture from the web and add it to your text, but back in time they created those for each chapter and book again.

What i found interesting is the influence the type of pen (directly or indirectly?) has on the way you draw! This looked very organic but also architectural in a miniature type of way?
It made me remember the time you used a HUGE orange posca on a bathroom wall and how absolutely different that turned out, would be cool to see you draw on a larger scale sometimes!

Merry Christmas! Even if the 800 pen is not as thrilling to draw with all the time ..you can look on it as a piece of art in its self. You always sound excited about your fav tech pen and the red and black pen you tried out a while back you seemed to really like it. I've bought one pen so far a kaweco sport and I have a vintage Kohinoor rapidograp 3060 I discovered in a box of mixed artsupplies I bought at an estate sale..I loved it immediately! Hope you have a Happy New Year and have an abundance of inspirations!

I know I’m a bit late to this video but I suggest you look into 3D sculpting - Follygon is a cool channel that does step by step stuff, detailed streams with instructions, recreating characters and things of that nature. You could 3D sculpt and then make a background for your character in blender, or even create a 2d drawing and have the lighting of the blender background as the source of lighting. I’m not sure if you like anime but Violet Evergarden 3D modes their background with blender to create a special touch. I would really enjoy whatever kind of content you make so I’m wishing you a resurgence in your creativity well! :)

I think if you want to draw with your fountain pens, you'd be better off collecting different nibs instead. And if there is one particular pen you like the feeling of, you could get someone to machine some adapter housings for that pen so you can use the nibs and/or feeds from other brands that normally wouldn't fit your favourite pen. Some people like to use Conid Bulkfillers in that way; as a "nib platform".

    "a fool and his money"
    Some dfinitions of a fool:
    - A member of a royal or noble household who provided entertainment, as with jokes or antics; a jester.
    - One who subverts convention or orthodoxy or varies from social conformity in order to reveal spiritual or moral truth: a holy fool.
    - To confound or prove wrong; surprise, especially pleasantly: We were sure they would fail, but they fooled us.
'tis money well spent I'd say.

I love how humble and down to earth you are, some ppl hype up expensive product so much. And you saying you will always use your 35 dollar pen with more pleasure is such a breath of fresh air in the youtube world,. It makes me want to come back time and time again.
It might sound weird but maybe rug making or using a plotter could be awesome. Make little stickers with your own art, and sell those on your website. That could be pretty nice !
Pls don't apologise for staying down to earth,.
    Merry Christmas.

I'm more into fountain pens and I use my isographs sparingly, but I also collect the weird oddball nibs that make huge lines, like look up monster nib on AliExpress it's wild, I got this big pad of 18x24 paper and I've been loving drawing big with magnum sharpies and other big sharpies, and once one of them starts drying out you can do a lot of cool shading with one that's dying which has been super fun

    Pen buyer's remorse? I think it's a thing.
The more pens you have used I think it becomes clear that the cost does not equate to the chance of a pen having the x factor, that happy coincidental alignment of perfect feedback, line width, ink flow, hand feel... all the good things that are different for most people and may be different for you on different days.
A zero cost pen can be understood for what it is quite easily.
A pen that you know you have invested in, both in cash, emotional angst at the specification or cost, expectation, this is YOUR pen before it land in your hands. This is a pen you need to embrace a relationship with to understand fully. Give it time.
Yes, I have problems like this too and too many pens, you're right to say it won't stop you getting another, and another...
    Great video.

It sounds like you have reached a plateau, and now eager for the next step or big challenge.
And remember; The choices we make are the only things that truly belong to us, and the world can never take them away.
So, through our choices, we have purchased the moments of experience, that bring us a greater understanding of the mysteries of the world and ourselves.
But take your time to stand on this plateau, explore this pleasant moment of the here and now. Then take look back and enjoy the view of all you have achieved and overcome in your struggles to reach this point in your life and art. To understand where you have come from, is to understand what direction you are going.
The difference between knowledge and understanding? That is experience. And we gain that experience through our decisions.
And we make our decisions based on the knowledge we have gathered. Sometimes you don't understand "the next choice" until you are on that higher plateau, having gained understanding, looking back and saying, "Ah! Yes! That's what I was doing".
Having said all that; Your muse may have a totally different idea when it spirits you away to some foreign land of discovery and adventure.

3D program tips: SketchUp has a free, basic version, but it is quite good at plotting out shapes, lines etc in some complexity if needed. I find this program quite intuitive personally so a good starter one to try out things in. I've also heard that Zbrush is great if you want to do more organic figures, but that one costs money. I've done some work in Blender and quite like it, it has a mix of standard shapes and organic ones, but I found it had a steep learning curve. Not sure with the new design of Blender that came out (was it last year?) , it might have made it easier to get a grip of it. Anyhow, best of luck trying out some 3D stuff, it is lots of fun for sure :)

I don't think that unearthing something has anything to do with what we call the planet. I've always found that we call our planet Earth, which is just another word for dirt. So unearthing is taking something out of the ground; which means the word is perfectly acceptable to be used on other planets.

Don't feel bad about spending that money on your hobby. You're essentially a famous artist. Art is your life and career. Like I've spent thousands and thousands on music gear (as you said, pricey) and I don't even earn a dime. I dropped a grand CAD on an Epiphone Casino earlier this year. And I am the opposite of rich, and I don't feel bad at all. The only thing that makes me happy to spend money on is on my hobbies. There is no better thing to spend your money on IMO, it just sucks it didn't end up blowing you away. Like I love my new guitar. Maybe going forward just make sure you know exactly what you're getting first or there is a return policy which I guess you can't really return a used pen.
