In this video, I look at 2 very different Audi S3 8L's, in search for some inspiration and ideas for what car I want next.
I thought I could turn this into a mini series, where I take you guys with me to various cars of different shapes and sizes, to see what really suits me next.

I think whatever car you get, it'll be sick when you're finished with it, but on a serious note - loved the production of this, some great camera work, liked the presenter style stuff too, and the arty close up's were perfect!

For almost 10 years till this day, this is my daily driver. Very nice and save car, especially when its snowy.
The things i had problems with were the camshaft chain, that gave me engine lights on the dashboard.
Also had to change my haldex system.. ( very expensive ) its a nice car, but it has very special needs.
I've got the 1.8 8p TFSI and I love it, I've only done visual mods so far but looking at getting it mapped and getting the exhaust done then I'll look at getting a new intake kit. I know what you mean when you say they're lacking something but with the rights mods you may be able to give it abit more power👌

XD your impressions are exactly the same as myne i had an a3 8l 1.8t modified and then i got an s3 , but after modding the s3 omg i love the s3 its the best.
New cars are fun but after a bit i always want my 1.8t back ;)

I think investing in something to stabilise the filming like a gimbal would be beneficial. But other than that well done with the video my man, you’re started the year with a very good video 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼

I'm in the exact same boat rn, looking for my next car after the mk4 gti, I was considering for a long time the s3 8l and building it to stage three with a bigger turbo but it really is just a awd mk4. Please have a look at the s3 8p as I think its the next best upgrade and would be great to see your opinion on one before I buy one this year.

Really wish I'd kept the S3 especially,as it was the car i had when i got hitched back in 2004 & more importantly was mint,had a sunroof,half blue alcantara half leather aswell like! LOL 😂
Bought an 8L1 S3 ABT (252hp) about 3months ago. Not a moment of regret so far

This took a while for me to make, which is why I've been a bit vacant on TH-cam recently. But if you enjoyed this video then I'm excited to make more similar to it!
Few things to note:
The first S3 actually had a small issue which didn't allow it to be revved passed 4.5k RPM. So I couldn't really get the full feeling of the car. Nonetheless it was so nice to drive and a great experience.
I would have liked to get a few more outsider shots of the modified S3, but the weather really wasn't great, and in the end I just wanted to get what I had up for you guys to see, as you have waited long enough!

I don’t think there is many ways you can go wrong with VAG group cars if they have been well looked after. The MK4 Golf era, S3 ect they still look good, and go well too. The R32 is rocketing in value but that’s a really characterful car especially when comparing to new VAG stuff. The V5 sounds great as well. Bear in mind if you go for an R32. The oil filter in the haldex coupling should have been changed roughly every 4 years/40K Miles, maybe same with the S3 too.

If you’re interested in the s3 and the 225 BAM engine, then definitely go for the mk1 cupra r. Front wheel drive is much more fun and it handles well, plus the cupra looks better inside and out

Had 4 or 5 of these over the years, still love them but just remember them being crap on fuel lol.
I had an 8p a few years ago, feels really well compared to the 8l and easily 300bhp with a cheeky map.
8p are very popular now as well, the video I stuck up had shit loads of views. Still have drove the 8v shape yet

I had one from new back in 2003 ! Damn I feel old lol. Part-xd it for a B5 RS4 which I still own toady.
I knew this was gonna happen cos I saw your post on the 8L FB page.
I have owned my S3 8L for the best part of 3 and a bit years... I have got to say unless you have a big wallet don't grab one. I bought mine for £3000 and have spent around that again on just keeping the thing going. I have all the usual 1.8t issues (as you do with a 20 year old car). But I have also had some mad issues. Mines pushing 300bhp now.
Mine also suffers from a bubbling roof which will get sorted in the summer. The sills and arches are perfect as the Audis were all undersealed from factory.
These cars are not the sharpest and not the fastest in standard form. But they are great cars to drive.
Mine is a 2001 so the first of the facelift and I luckily got the B5 inteior parts (non-rubber finish) so the paint hasn't come off my heater controls, headlight switch etc.
With all the issues and stuff I have had... would I sell it? Not a chance. You need to take a 300bhp one to mexico and feel it. Honestly the car just keeps pulling past 130+...
I personally think they are great. I am gonna VR6 turbo swap mine next year as I really don't like the 1.8T
The S3 is great at everything but not perfect at anything. They need a big turbo to be fun.

I went from an Ibiza 20vt track spec car, to a MK2 Leon cupra.. I'd seriously recommend looking into a Leon.. 2.0 Tfsi k04 240bhp standard. Easily get it to 350-380 on a stage 2+
If you could find the 5 cylinder those are amazing in the same year but this is awesome too

Worse thing about the old vag’s are the buttons and interior parts covered in that decent when new rubber but after a little ware they look crappy, the s3 is a prime example in this vid but love the VAG cars as you can see with my A3 8p in my profile pic, but anyway good vid very informative

A £2500 S3 is one of the best bang for your buck cars available 👍 If you go for one dont pay too much for it and dont rush in to buy. Good service history, recent timing belt and pump is must
Just got my self a S3 as well, a 8P. I love it soo much, but it's kinda slow honestly. Love the Imola yellow though. Can't wait to make it louder and go stage 1 or 2.
I had one and honestly it didn't felt "kinda slow" when I bought it..great allround car. After 1 year I went Stage 1 with remap, filter and downpipe and it was even better...one of the best car I've owned and it did age so well, never had a problem too.
I must say i still love the design of this car, aged great.. looks much better than the next generation imo.
Are these 1.8 high mileage S3s reliable at all??? Or are you having to visit the garage often. Rn I've got a choice between a 3.2 V6 in the Golf R32. And the 1.8T. Which is more reliable and better for motorway journeys even though they both will have about 100k miles. Appreciate some comments

Your videos are very nice ! Are modified cars expensive to be insured? Im wondering if people have to pay way more for insurance when owning a sport car
It really goes off of the stats for how many claims there are for what type of car, so it could be cheaper to insure a sporty car over a modified standard spec car. Cheers for your kind words!
Hey Brad one thing I was wondering what was the stock Audi like for noise wise not exhaust noise but maybe it would be affected by this. My golf rattles from everywhere; roof light switches center console panels and road noise is terrible with windows up (great if your want to hear a nice custom exhaust) which means you've got to crank the stereo up the faster you go. Given the Audi apparent increased attention to build quality do you or others feel the cabin noise is quieter maybe better soundproofing from factory better door/window seels?
Definitely quieter than my golf by a mile 👍
My mate has the 20v 1.8t and i've got the 2.0 TFSI, lots of power to be had out of the 2.0 tfsi with a TTE420, the quattro is brilliant. Try a standard 8p or stage 1 8p - you will love it :D

JayEmm on Cars 335i a lot more expensive buy in the first place. I do love my BMW’s but prefer the non turbos because of the sound just like your 130i

Have you have you thought of a Audi A3 3.2 the Mark 5 r32 was built on its running gear and you seem to quite enjoy yourself in the R32 and pricewise the A3 is an absolute bargain right now

These actually don't need forged rods until 360 bhp, the rods are stronger than other 1.8t mk4 cars. It can handle upgraded intercoolers and in and out manifolds

I’ve just sold my TRP mapped gti and was gunna go s3 but it’s the exactly the same car really they use the same platform i went with the mk5 gti and its a big step on from the mk4 and the tfsi engine are great to tune what ever u decide there all great cars

try a e46 330i it drives really smooth and has alot of power with a beautiful sound 6 in line engine

I got one and the driving position is fantastic, modding it is easy and the shape really grows on you. A stage 2 will get you close to 300 bhp and most important of all, its a PROPER sports car designed to go fast! Good luck on your choice. richphela
Leon cupra R 225 is the most fun mk4 platform car there is...
Maybe if it came as a 3 door version, to be honest the S3 is the best version of this platform

I’ve driven a MK4 GTI and I owned a mk4 Jetta and I never really liked it
But god I love my MK5 GTI with the TSI
@@Ethan007Hacks We get the TT 225 in the states which is the same platform except the weight is held much lower to the ground. It makes it the best 225 platform imo
I was gonna get the mk1 audi TT 225 which is literally an S3 but half the price and cheaper to insur too but ive opted for a fabia vRS now

i am me that’s with all performance cars. My friends was mint as fuck running stage 2. 4 years of ownership apart from clutch no issues. Well it was until someone went into the back of him while he sitting at the lights

Instead of an S3 maybe think about the audi TT 225 so same engine with 225 bhp but you are in a lower seat position so its a completely different feeling to drive and they handle better and just overall better quality interior and is a sports car not a hatch. Some simple mods like putting the v6/quattro sport front and back bumpers on and a splitter transform the look of them from a so called hairdressers car into a mean beast. Also the insurance on an audi tt 225 is considerably less than an s3 so something else to think about maybe.

I’d stay with the Golf mate, the S3 is great with the AWD but my Golf is on a stage 2 map running 240hp, I raced a 300hp S3 and kept with it, plus I personally think the golf looks much better. My mate has had S3’s, a 350hp classic impreza and a stage 2 mk4 Golf and the only one he wants back is the Golf 🤷🏻♂️
I think you should buy a car 2006 onwards to feel the difference between an old and a more modern car
BMW e46 m3 it`s a great fast and fun car to drive. You should definitely try one but if you don`t have much money e46 330ci is a great cheaper option

Brother had the 8L, nothing but problems... but thats part of owning a heavily modified car. I had the 8P 265hp as standard nice car but not worth all that money id stick with the 8L price wise.

I think this is a great choice. Sadly we dont get them in America. I have owned 2 B5 1.8ts one fwd manual the other quattro tiptronic, 1 2.8 quattro b5 and a b4 quattro. I recently bought my first VW a mk4 gti. And I always wanted this generation S3. You should try driving some of the audis with a proper audi only developed engine. Like the B5 S4(which will give you that exciting, this is special feeling). Or the C6 A6 4.2, S6 if you can find them cheap over there(who wouldnt want a lamborghini V10). The audi TT is another great option similar to the S3. They are pretty nice. one thing that your going to always notice is the drivetrain loss for the quattro. Its never going to be as quick as the mk4 and after a while of ownership you will pick up on that drivetrain lag. But for all wheel drive its worth it.I took one of my B5 quattros on a police chase. And at 135mph the 4 wheel drive had no issues cornering at that speed on the highway. one thing I always have noticed in the audis is they do have a rubber feeling to them. I know its weird but thats the only way I can describe it. Audi has a great brand image I think youll be happy with one. If you dont like them theres always 540i land ; ). I know this is pricey but if financing is an option the current generation golf Rs are truly amazing. One of the best cars ive ever driven. My mk4 build is focused on trying to beat one.

You can get more bhp for stage 2 it’s the torque that kills the engine, you’ll not want to go over 300lbft

S3 8l for me is best i have 1.8t 8l and freaking love it offcourse mines 150hp stock and s3 8l is like 230hp stock so its so fun to drive ant s3 8l and it has quattro for mr audi s3 8l is best car ever
I owned a 1.8t cupra r, the engines are strong but riddled with problems, they eat coil packs for fun, intake leaks everywhere, perished coolant hoses causing leaks, squeaky and Grindy tensioners and pulleys, shit on fuel especially when mapped
Do look good and really practical, I wasn’t disappointed with my purchase but glad I sold it when I did
I think in that generation you should just stick to the fwd cars, 8p is where things get great. I own mk5 gti now but that is what i want!

love my s3 8l very smooth but still fast,yeah they have problems but if you look into it as i did before i bought one you will see common faults
biggest one i had was a cracked manifold thought it would be just the down pipe but ended up with engine out and new relentless one fitted
electric windows repaired as these a common fault too other than that been great for the year i have owned it but i do service and repair faults asap
rust on wings and lacquer peel is common too but don't bother me as is still solid compared to a vauxhall or ford of this age
prefer them to a golf as they are not as common and still look great
8ps not got much more poke standard as i been behind a few and they was in front but was not pulling away as you would expect not alot init apart from price lol
