  • I am a firm believer that the Wayne Dalton Torquemaster Plus spring system has a place in the garage door industry. Yet I am not a believer in the way Wayne Dalton has managed this spring system throughout the years. The cable drums for example. They fray easily. Thus this video will talk about how to avoid the mistake of using bad cables.

I live in Fargo nd. I have the Wayne Dalton 9100 garage door. The conditions are extreme. From rain, to sleet, snow, and ice. It was 20 years before I had a spring break. All repairmen in my area wanted to convert for $1200. I purchased a new set of springs for less than $200. It was not very difficult to change. This is a 16’x7’ door. I am VERY satisfied with the quality of this door. It puzzles me when people say that they don’t stand up. How poorly are they treating the door? How can it be worse than frozen shut from an ice storm. Or packed in tight with a 6’ snow drift from a blizzard?
I can’t understand how people can say these are bad doors. They must be doing something very wrong.

I've been a garage door tech for 7 years in southern AZ. 9100 model doors are extremely common here, I replaced dozens of torquemaster spring systems and converted even more.
This is all anecdotal, of course, but there are numerous problems that i have encountered.
Bucking/oscillating while the door is being operated. Perfectly balanced in manual operation.
Ratchet mechanisms failing and causing springs to lose tension.
Plastic cones of the springs break while winding.
On multiple occasions, the springs will break in 2-4 years. This is on brand new homes built in 2018-19-20.
Some of the worst running doors I've seen mainly on glass tops. With everything gone over, spaced well, correct springs. They would be incredibly stiff and impossible for someone to open. Im not sure exactly what the failure is for that. I could only suspect the springs were caught on the plastic lining somehow.
Also, I have had the bearings seize on the drums. This was from it being a gen 1 torquemaster, and they left the old drums on after converting it to gen 2. Bad install, of course.
My local wayne dalton closed down a few years ago, so i can no longer provide torquemaster springs at a reasonable cost. A pair of 207x1&3/4x31 is what i use for conversions. As long as my math is right, at 7.5 turns, they have an estimated life of 65k cycles.
All in all, I have no problems with the doors. Once you know how to repair them, they can easily last just as long as any other door in that price range. Ouside forces excluded (vehicle damage).
Also, I've never replaced the bearings on the torquemaster drums. Does wayne dalton sell them individually where you are? I dont think you mentioned them. They should be changed with every spring replacement.

Thank you for all this great insight! Yes I have experienced a number of these same issues. I'm hoping Wayne Dalton updates the Torquemaster again soon.
Our industry needs more spring configuration options. Extension springs are not as smooth as torsion springs. Counter weights are not easily accessible. Torquemaster is a great idea but needs tweaking to offer the same benefits as torsion springs.

It is the first time I have seen this and I might ask the installer to convert back to spring because I know how work on them. DIY home owner. Both cable came off.

Hello! Thanks for sharing your feedback.
As a DIYer, what caused your cables to come off?
How long have you had the garage door?

You should be ok with 16 full turns. Here is a video that might help.
