    Good and informative video. I have one question though. The installer described how he was folding -in the ends of the excess seal on each end, but did not mention why he was doing it that way and how he did it nor why instead of trimming the excess end pieces off. What is the purpose of leaving the short excess piece and why and how do you fold it in? Does this prevent insects and rodents from getting inside the open space of the tube?

    I think this guy is a windbag, that gives limited useful info in 18 minutes. You should know the weight of the door, which you can weigh with a scale. That determines the torsion spring size to counterbalance the weight; there’s also calculation on 2 springs or one. He tells nothing to do this, because this is a setup to call him or another to do the work. Standard torsion springs, sized properly, last about 10,000 cycles or 10 years, based on 3 cycles per day. This guy makes it like it’s a trade secret. 2 spring systems last 2x as long because the loads are distributed. Really, look at videos from people who’s actually giving info. But, if you don’t know what you’re doing, you can hurt yourself with winding or unwinding the springs which can have 300 inch pound of torque stored in 8 full turns, or mess up your lift wire. And if you do have a heavy door, like 150 lbs, it can be a bear to manage on your own. I’ve had pros come to service my doors, and twice they made mistakes, like not tightening the bolts enough and either the wheel or spring became loose, and in one, the door was uneven due to improper left and right side wheel alignment: wtf.

    I like to wrap electrical tape on my drill bits as a visual indicator to mark the depth I want. For DYI'ers, your local home improvement store _may_ stock those struts if you don't have a handy garage door service company willing to sell parts. If you go online, you will probably have to get a multi-piece strut. Never fixed a sagging door, but I still wonder if "preloading" the strut would make things better, worse, or no real difference.

Should be simple enough. Just can’t justify paying 200$ for just installing the same item I’m gonna buy. Maybe not maybe “precision door” charges less. Just hate getting estimate or wasting peoples time. But maybe I will just call them. 😂

  • @seanswart962

    8yr tech here. Any sagging in a door is due to cracks in the panels compromising the structural integrity of the panel. Even with a strut, the panel will still have enough flex over 16’ to cause a snowball of issues in the next few years. Post-install struts are used, but they’re nothing more than a band-aid while we wait for a new panel or complete door to be delivered. You gave good instructions (count the windings before you add turns to make sure it’s not overwound already) but the last step should’ve been get a few quotes on replacement doors. Just my $0.02

    Adding more than 1/2 a turn is not worthwhile and has equal cons as pros. This is also in consideration that the springs have been installed awhile and are fatigued. Springs being excessively old is also a factor. The door is lighter from the bottom but now opens harder and puts more stress on the opener while opening after the halfway point and while closing until halfway down.

    • @sosgds
      @sosgds 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Some issues that caught my attention. 1. You said the door is meant to be balanced everywhere. Not true. The drums are made to have a large radius for the last foot of travel. This destroys the balance on that last foot of travel so the door falls. It is designed this way on purpose because some people do not have an opener attached to keep the door closed. This prevents gusts of winds from walking the door open if the door is in the closed position. Some European doors do not have drums to prevent the winds from opening the door but here in America they are almost always designed that way. 2. Springs are a bit strange. They are usually rated for a bit more than 10,000 cycles at 30 quarter turns. If you add four more turns you will be decreasing the spring life by almost half! So now those springs will only be getting about 6,000 cycles. It's probably better, economically, to have the opener which theoretically is rated for about 80,000 openings to do a little more work. 3. You sure you have to pre-drill those tek screws when reusing the existing holes?

    • @TheOnespeedbiker
      @TheOnespeedbiker 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

    • @sosgds
      @sosgds 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Fascinating perspective! Personally I prefer balance at the three, five, and seven foot level of the door opening. This particular garage door had practically perfect balance opening and closing. The additional strut did not really throw off much but just at the 7 ft level. And the community truly appreciates your perspective on the Springs as well. I could see that happening on a spring that's rated for 10k. Additionally if you got good tech screws you shouldn't have to pre and drill through the strut. I just did it specifically for this video. Of course the caution is not to drill all the way through the door cuz that could be really bad.

      Good question. It's for those families that use their garage door as the front door.

  • @stephenthompson3418
    @stephenthompson3418 10 วันที่ผ่านมา

    I will never buy a LiftMaster/Chamberlain product again. I was using the home assistant platform (open source/free) and tied MyQ into my home automation system so the garage door would open before I was right at my garage door through a geofence (Tasker - Android App) so I didn't have to wait at the door for it to open- something you can't do with a garage door opener because it won't send a signal that far. I tied it together with my cellphone via a VPN (Wireguard, open source/free) to my LAN and it would only work if my cellphone was connected to my car through Bluetooth so that if I was walking through the geofence or in someone else's car the garage door wouldn't open. After getting all of that to work together, it certainly was frustrating when it just quit working one day. There are workarounds such as Ratgdo as another user has already mentioned, but as you mentioned in your video, to take away something that worked after a bunch of customers are using it will definitely rub your customer base the wrong way so much so that some will not only leave, but start evangelizing against Chamberlain/Liftmaster as I have. To think that people will restructure/refactor their home automation system around a garage door opener is really the tail wagging the dog. There are so many substitutes and you are absolutely right about exposing your LAN to attacks (Recommend using VLANs as well as firewall rules to isolate devices and minimize the number APIs in your system that require internet access to work such as MyQ) Thank you for posting this video! I'm done venting now.

    is this opener still a decent choice in Sept 2024 for $700 installed?

      Excellent question! For $700 installed? That's a steal. This operator in Southern California goes for about $895 on up to $1,200 depending on the height of your door and the configuration of your garage.

      @@sosgds Thanks for the open answer. 👍 most installers hide or keep that information close to the vest. Kudos
