    Bravo, this is how a DIY video is done!!! No life story, no unnecessary commentary, no explaining the same thing over and over again. Just straight to the task with good lighting and camera angles. I especially like how you sped up the video slightly while still allowing us the understand what you're saying. Nice job.

    Great video to a construction pro from a construction pro! I never did this before but at 75 I was simpler to DIY then to pay $200 plus a $40 cable for a specialist to replace one broken cable. I ordered a better 1/8 stainless steel cable for $18 on the internet and it arrived in a few days. This material is harder to cut, bend and tie than what the video shows. I expected this when I ordered it, but I worked with this type of cable before. It is tougher and lasts and doesn't cost much more. The loop at the end for the door was the perfect size. When I attached the cable thru the three-hole plate to the S hook, I made only one knot and left the excess in a coiled loop that could not slip thru. The original cable was this way. The stainless cable being much stiffer will never untie itself. I also used electric tape to secure the coil. I made one mistake on the blind side next to a wall. The rear pully has a guide attached to it for the safety cable. When the pully is oriented correctly the safety cable will be to the outside. Mine wasn't and the guide cables were tangled with the safety cable. As soon as I reversed this with the safety cable to the outside everything looked right and worked fine. Perhaps this will be helpful to another beginner. I did both in a hour. Thanks much! 🤓👍👍

    My garage doors are both over 50 years old and I've done this cable replacement a few times and rebuilt the structures that held the garage door openers. They did it on the cheap when they put it in and it had to be redone. 50 years is a long time for a garage door but if you do some maintenance they can last that long.

    Nice helpful video. Don't grease the tracks. They don't need it and it will only attract dirt and debris and gum them up.
    You should also change that badly rusted bottom bracket. If that corrosion continues, sooner or later the stud that you loop the cable around at the bottom of the door will snap off.

  • @wyldanimal2
    @wyldanimal2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    You put the vice grips on the wrong side of the track.
    Never pinch the rounded side. Pinch on the flat side.
    The rollers have to ride in the rounded side and if you pinch it closed then the rollers might bind up on the pinched rounded side.
    Wrap some duct or electrical tape around the cable where you are going to cut it.
    This will keep the end from unraveling after you make the cut.

    Nice profession video. My cable came off the pulley after 30 uses of the door. Spring is extended and wire lodged off the pully. Have no idea yet how to get wire back on pulley. The cable was tight and the extra ends were securely tight, looped correctly with several U clamps on cable. HELP ANYONE...

      It’s possible the door rollers are sticking. And causing extra stress on the door. Only way to restring it is to take off the springs like I show you in the video and start that way. I actually did a video on replacing the door springs, you can also watch that as well to give you some ideas.

    My door is old and no drop in parts available. Springs, pulleys, and cables need to be replaced. Have to modify bracket with fixed pulley for 3" replacement pulleys. Also, header bracket is screwed to is termite eaten so will dip lag screws in epoxy and insert and let dry. Once I tackle replacement of 11" of header wall and new door will buzz off lag screw heads off with angle grinder. This job will take a week to complete; just fixing door for now to get through 2024. Replacing the wall and door will be a 2025 project.

      Disconnect both spring cables so door rolls freely and close the door (Be careful so they don't slam to the ground). Place a bathroom scale under the center of the door and then you will have the door weight needed to purchase the proper spring. Write this weight somewhere on the garage ceiling where you will find it next time one breaks.

    • @YourReviewChannel
      @YourReviewChannel  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    • @williammason8566
      @williammason8566 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The cable that runs through the spring is designed to keep the spring in place in case of spring failure. That spring is under a great amount of tension when the door is closed. When the spring breaks it is usually when the door is in operation. So the cable keeps the spring in place when it fails as opposed to breaking and flying creating a possible fatal injury if it head someone in the head or creates a lot of damage to anything that it might hit. So it’s important to have one in place.
