    I agree that some contractors may install the wrong torsion spring in a conversion, but the right one will double the lifespan over the torquemaster. I've installed plenty of new Wayne Dalton doors and would never recommend the torquemaster in any circumstance, and it's not because i'm afraid of something new, it's because they brake every 6-8 yrs!

      Edit: I successfully replaced it myself. 80 bucks. I don't care if it breaks every 2 years. It's cheaper not to have to pay someone

    Great video, I wish I would of watched it earlier. I'm removing a Torquemaster plus with an Idrive operner because it's getting old and I wanted to replace on my schedule and not when it broke. I researched the weight of my Wanye Dalton door using Google because I did'nt want to unwind the springs to weigh the door. I ordered a 16x7 door EZ set Clopay conversion kit with the lowest spring rate for a double door, and that's where my problems started. If I wound the spring per the instuctions the door would open up about a foot by it's self, if I set the winding to when the door just lifted, when you open the door the cables unwound....that was fun to lower back down. I weighed the WD door and it was around 135 lbs and my springs were for 190lbs. I had to order a 133 to 155 spring for a 8X7 door... Thanks again, new subsciber

    I've been in the garage door industry for over 40 years. Go with the torsion spring system if you have the headroom. You won't be disappointed. In my honest opinion and in my experience, WD Torque-master is the biggest piece of garbage in the door industry, with its undersized cables to the cheap plastic gears and drums. Expecting a piece or two of wire four foot long with a one inch diameter with the wire gauge not much bigger than a coat hanger with almost 16-17 turns to last more than 10 years is ridiculous. The other spring system I believe is a total waste is the Clopay easy-set torsion spring system. A crazy amount of extra steps to counter balance a door with another proprietary spring. I do like the easy-set extension spring system, though.

    • @sosgds
      @sosgds  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For a time I also felt the same way about the Wayne Dalton product. But I respect Wayne Dalton's mentality behind the Torquemaster Plus spring system to work as an ecosystem with their 9100 model door. I agree that they are not the best systems in the industry. But they do offer a nice value proposition for someone who simply wants an entry level insulated garage door with a end-user safe spring mechanism.

    Good points. My 2 cents. Torquemaster is just a cheaper counter balance to make. And Wayne Dalton offers this set up with all there models. Wayne Dalton has made this proprietary. Your forced to buy a Wayne Dalton spring from them. Same with Clopay and Amarr with there box store set up.
    The problem with torquemaster is. (1) 2 trips are required to know what balance you need. (2) you can't control the cycle life of the spring(s). (3) Wayne Dalton only sells Gen 2 springs.
    (4) If the door opens a locking device is activated preventing the door from closing. (5) you have to wait forever to receive the springs. (6) You can be stuck with the same company, because no one else works on it. (7) This adds up to be very expensive. over and over.

    • @sosgds
      @sosgds  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello Andrew! Thank you for this fantastic feedback. You bring up great points. I believe some of what you mention could also apply to torsion springs, especially if the customer passes on high cycle springs. A pair of 192 or 207 just won't give you many miles. Higher cycle springs should be offered as a better value proposition. Of course some dealer installers will take advantage and price gouge for higher cycle springs.
      The reality is our industry greatly needs an update to spring technology. The current spring shortage is a clear example of that need. I know there's no easy answer, but I don't seen efforts from the manufactures to think outside the box.

      Yeah torque master is home owner stuff imo. Traditional torsion springs can be clamped if they break so you can continue to operate your door without damaging anything while you wait for the new spring to come in unlike torque master where you don’t even realize if a spring breaks and possibly damage your door to find out when you hit your wall control button.

The new Torquemaster plus will be easier to find online thru Amazon, etc. Yet if you are in a state that will allow you to purchase parts to convert to torsion springs; that might be a better long term route. A high cycle torsion springs can offer a longer cycle life. Thus if you plan on staying forever at your current property then converting the springs would be a good choice.
