  • Safe to say, when Beck's Morning Phase was announced as one of the nominees for the Album of the Year GRAMMY, everyone was surprised. Sort of a companion piece to 2002's Sea Change, this album sees Beck in an introspective mood, with none of the flash or snark that comes with his more well-known hits. The Grammy voters got it right on this one

Grammy voters NEVER get it right. Ask the beatles. Ask Led Zep. Ask Queen. For the love of god do some homework.

@@babyirene3188 I’m comparing becks competition in the year he was nominated. No need to compare with the musical giants you mentioned, they are irrelevant in this case. He deserves to win from the pool he competed with

I don't think anyone here actually listened to Morning Phase.

Wow with all these Johnny come lately's waxing philosophically about Beck. His Dad is an accomplished arranger. This is a gift to his Dad and he got a Grammy for it.

He deserved this. Once my ears caught odelay when I was 14, I rode his waves. Every album brings something unexpected. It’s getting easier now. Devils haircut FTW , tho.

He's the closest thing to Bob Dylan and David Bowie that we're getting this generation. David Bowie is gone, Bob is old and you never know when he might pass. Then there's Beck, and everyone else after him. He's a legend in America

While I love Beck, I'd have to add Ryan Adams up there with him when it comes to our generation's great songwriters.

      Really?
He was everywhere when Odelay was released.
Perhaps you weren't born way back then?
And as for the 2 comments posted here, nah, he's nowhere near Bowie and Dylan, and he's eons ahead from Ryan Adams.
He's a very capable songwriter when he wants to but he puts out a lot of uninteresting stuff inbetween.
It's only when he gets this introspective when he blows away anyone.

Wrong. Both Odelay and Midnite Vultures were better albums. If you knew anything about his music, you would know that.

Huh? Well I hope you're well acquainted with him by now. One of the greatest musicians / producers that have ever lived.

Ewh I just hears some shiksa say Beck is normcore. Honey, beck was normcore when you were watching the teletubbies. Normcore. I loathe that word and the people who use it.

Half this record is extraordinary. The orchestrations mostly. One must ignore Beck's uniformly horrible lyrics. And voice. Thought the voice isn't quite so mesmerizingly poor this time. And the positively dreariest drumming. Half of it is absolutely lovely.
