- www.vladtv.com - Singer/songwriter Rico Love sat down with VladTV and shared his thoughts on the 2015 Grammys, saying he admires Kanye West's passion for music, but disagreed with his statements on artistry and that Beck should've given his award to Beyonce. Rico also says he believes the right man won, and that Beck's album was overall better than Beyonce's.
Rico also spoke on the Grammy voting system, saying it's not some white guy making racist judgements on music, but a collective where several artists choose to not even participate.

Yet Kanye still rushed stage in his child like manner and later during an interview after the Grammys claimed back should do the right thing and give the Grammy to Beyonce who he believed truly deserved it! now I'm a big fan of Beyonce and her awesome talents , and her album was / is absolutely wonderful! But when it comes to Becks immense artistic musical talent, he by far deserved the award this year!
Remember just because you may not like the type of music and artist produces and puts out, does not mean that they are bad or have no talent!? Unfortunately so many people are very narrow minded therefore have a very narrow selection of music they like and or respect!? I love music and just about every type of musical genre! like from Mozart to the Beatles and from Billie Holiday to N.W.A. And Nirvana.

What does have more than one writer have to do with art? Beyoncé pushed the envelope as to what an artist of her caliber could do. It was almost unprecedented for a modern artist no less a woman of color to just surprise drop an album. She quite literally shifted the music industry with a single album creating a plan for artist after her to surprise drop music and do cohesive visuals for their songs. Beck is talented yes but it makes no sense for you to get on a high horse as if playing an instrument and writing (which she does, she writes harmonies for most of her songs)
If you play an instrument and sing I find that more impressive than of you just sing. If you play many instruments and sing I find that even more impressive. Its like athletes who excell in multiple sports.@@courtonjohnson1191

I applaud Rico Love's rational thinking. At the 6:40 mark I wouldn't say the misassociation has to do with racism but more with exposure. More of the general public might know about Beyonce and Kanye etc, but that doesn't entitle them to automatically winning awards simply because they have more fans. In all honesty I didn't even know Beck released his album until AFTER the ceremony, and I've known about his music for a long time. It's pretty unfair and rather narrow minded for people to say "I've never heard of this person SO WHY DID THEY WIN?!"
In the end it's all about music. A medium created by people for all of us to enjoy in our own way with unique styles that appeal to niche audiences, or greater groups of fans. It doesn't boil down to who wins more awards because of why they should, it boils down to the love of listening to these works.

Ok that’s fair even though her album was amazing let’s put that aside. On her next nomination when she lost to Adele the only other argument was “ SHE LOST BECAUSE ITS SALES OVER ARTISTRY GET OVER IT”
The Grammys pick and choose when to lean towards an artistic album vs an artist that was snubbed in previous years vs a more influential, “well-known” album, etc. Fast forward to the 2023 Grammys, and notable publications like Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, etc. had “Renaissance” as the No. 1 album of 2022 because of it’s intricate artistry and high level of detail, yet she still lost.
It feels like the Grammy committee will find just about every excuse to not give Beyonce “Album of the Year” unless she makes the music that THEY would prefer for her to make or manages to produce an album of songs that perform so astronomically well in mainstream music culture that it would be crazy if they didn’t give her that award. White artists don’t have to go through this as much as black artists do. In 2023 , the excuse was “Beyonce has enough awards…why don’t we give AOTY to someone else”…and I wouldn’t be surprised if the committee comes up with another excuse the next go ‘round. It’s sad.

Even 4 years later, I still fully agree with this. People need to realize that quantity =/= quality. I respect both Beck & Beyoncé as they have influenced a lot of artists and have done a lot for the music industry and I respect people's opinions, but sometimes - let's agree to disagree. Beck has done almost everything on Morning Phase by himself - he wrote all the songs by himself, self-produced the album and played most of the instruments while having a few people help him with sound engineering and a few orchestral arrangements by David Campbell. Beyoncé just sings and that's pretty much it. There are too many songwriters and producers on her eponymous album which is brings it down, hence getting identical acclaim as Morning Phase did. And besides, she did win a general award before (Song of the Year), so people shouldn't really be brought down by this.

Especially considering they're different genres. So in other categories you have, Beyonce being better received by critics and fans. Obviously doing better numbers. Forever influencing album promotion and singles release. While Beck had an album that was about as good as hers but accomplished less. And everyone's excuse? Beck plays a lot of instruments? It's ALBUM OF THE YEAR. Not most talented artist and their input toward the album of the year.
