    What do you think about Wicked marketing their musical AS a musical? And do you know Wicked is being split into 2 different parts? Let me know here!

      It wouldn’t make any sense to have Ariana Grande, who is one of the biggest pop stars in the world, in the movie and not market it as a musical! She’s best known for being an amazing singer and who wouldn’t want to showcase that to advertise the movie! It’s just common sense IMO!

    Basing off of the book, Wicked could be 4 full-length features. If you’ve seen the stage production, Wicked should’ve been a 5-hour long show but no one will sit through that. As a huge fan of Wicked, I’m glad the movie is in two parts. People should stop focusing on the fact it comes from one source material because the first part reads just fine as a standalone movie. And for those who don’t know the story as well as I do, if they never end up seeing the second half, I’m positive they’d be perfectly satisfied as it still fits perfectly with the Wizard of Oz lore.
    Only thing is, as someone who’s already seen the movie, they’ll definitely want to come back. I’m not worried about that.

      i'm just afraid for how they'll pull it off and it may distance people away. I know where the first movie ends so I am curious on how they're going to fill the second movie since the second act of the musical is pretty light.
      But it all will come down to execution. As long as it doesn't feel like half a movie, I think it will be fine. But we won't truly know how they adapted it in terms of the second movie until this time next year.
      Great that you already saw it! I'll be watching it on Saturday.

    Every single Disney animated musical after Hercules has hidden that it's a musical in the trailer. Mulan, Tangled, The Princess and the Frog, Winnie the Pooh, Encanto, Moana, the Lion King remake, Frozen and most ridiculously of all, Frozen 2 (not an exhaustive list), all had trailers that hid their respective movies' main selling point. Even Enchanted, only partially animated, got in on the prank. Any singing, they try to pass off as either incidental background music or a 3-second gag in an otherwise non-musical movie. They're still pulling this nonsense with Moana 2 and Mufasa.
    The thing is, I don't know that you're right about Wicked being different. The trailers that they've actually put in theaters are hinting at it being a musical in a "plausible deniability" kind of way. You hear the actors singing, but it's in the background where it might just be an unrelated song added for the trailer if you don't know. There are a few very brief shots of ensemble choreography that you might just take as the movie being quirky. And you see Ariana Grande's back during "Popular" so you shouldn't see her mouth is moving. It's an edge case, since it's definitely clearer it's a musical than in the aforementioned Disney movies or Mean Girls. But it still shows a belief that people just don't want to see musicals, which, I mean, then why are you making musicals? Clearly you think someone's the audience for it. You don't think telling them there are songs in the movie from famous songwriters might get them to buy tickets?

    • @MoryBuxner
      @MoryBuxner 5 วันที่ผ่านมา

      (To be clear, I'm very aware of the TH-cam videos you referenced, I'm just saying that a video on TH-cam is not the same as a thing they're actually putting in theaters for a mass audience.)

    • @bend316
      @bend316  5 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Gonna have to respectfully disagree with you on the marketing end as its not just the trailers and featurette's but recently in the past couple weeks they've released new featurettes for multiple songs across not only TH-cam but also tiktok and other various social channels.
      I get what you're saying about the trailers though. It's like they're touching on it but they're afraid to go full musical just in case they go a tad too far. And I'm not a fan of them baiting people either. Marketing is in a weird place. I've worked on movies and they specifically said we can't market it as a musical, even though it was, because musicals never tested well with little boys.

  • @vilekyle3000

    I was worried when the first bits of marketing was released and they were being coy about it being a musical. They've done a good job of correcting that in these last couple of months. Not making it clear that this is just Part One will create a backlash. It's a matter if the quality of the movie can endure it that criticism.

    • @bend316
      @bend316  6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah I’m happy that they’re advertising it this way and I’m hoping it works out.
      For part one they are ending at the end of the act 1 musical, but I’m more worried for the second movie as Act 2 is really not that long in the musical so that may really seem like part of a movie so that may cause a lot of backlash

    What I hate about all this argument of 'musicals haven't been doing well in recent years' is it's completely down to the marketing but also the world we lived in even early last year we were still sceptical due to the pandemic. Studios assumed we would know and want to see these musicals but the musicals on Broadway themselves weren't even that big compared to Wicked, Phantom, Les Mis. The mean girls musical hasn't even been performed outside of the states so not marketing as a musical was weird it's can't rely on just name recognition if people dont know. In the heights is famous but to the general public it's not, if anything the smaller musicals and shows that turn into movies should advertise it's a musical more.

    • @bend316

      The era of Glee and High School Musical have long since passed. Unless the musical is an animated movie, people are just not into musicals anymore than they once were back then.

  • @davy209
    @davy209 6 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    It’s seems like now, the only way a musical can be profitable is if the movie is animated and caters to children. It worked for “Encanto” and “Moana 2” is projected to make a ton of money upon its release.

    • @bend316
      @bend316  6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Even that I do see waning though. Like I said, Smallfoot was not advertised as a musical and Lego Movie 2 was a musical and they didn't advertise that either.
      With Wish, they did advertise it as a musical and it did very poorly, but that could be contributed to the fact that it just was not a good movie.
      But even with Moana 2, they haven't fully started marketing it as a musical, even though everyone knows it will be so curious to see if they start releasing songs or anything like that in the next few weeks as it comes out

    To answer your question, fans of musical theater are very aware this is a 2 part movie and have known this for some time. It ends after Act 1 of the musical. Act 2 is Wicked Part 2.

      Insane right?! In the musical there are two acts so I’m assuming the movie will split right when Act one is done, but that means they’re probably adding quite a bit to it since the movie is about the entire length of the musical

    Dear Evan Hansen bombed because it was a bad adaptation. I love Ben Platt, but he’s aged out of the roll and shouldn’t have been cast. It was a lazy attempt at adapting that show. Wicked is different, it is by far the most cinematic musical ever to the point that the story felt limited by being a stage show. The two act structure will work for this show and could possibly work for other shows too. Musical movie adaptations have the potential to expand and improve on the source material. Dear Evan Hansen could have addressed it’s critiques and better communicated it themes and messages especially with the ending. Musical movies can be successful, but they have to be good, and faithful adaptations that take advantage of film as an artistic medium, because film and live theater are two very different mediums and with film you can do more than you can do on a stage. Take advantage of that and bring the spectacle to life.

    • @bend316
      @bend316  วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@Anonymous-qh9gq while that’s true about dear Evan Hansen just not being a good movie, west side story and in the heights were good movies and those didn’t do well either. There are many factors for why those might not have done well either with awareness or one being a remake but still, did not do well.
      Wicked seems to be doing well and I’m happy for it. Glad the gamble paid off
