I feel most of these were obvious. However, what was the RED BOOK Glenda held up in the POPULAR scene? I think it quickly shows the cover, and then she opened it to a page with a man's face drawn/illustration??? If anyone could help I would be so thankful--- as this is really puzzling me!

In the books, Madame Morrible is described as having very obvious fish like qualities and characteristics. When she's first seen walking into the courtyard at Shiz, her costuming gives her the silhouette of a fish "walking" on it's tail. Absolutely love the costumer for that!

It goes along with the broadway show end of act 1. It makes sense, not just from a money standpoint (they can make more) but from a character development standpoint. I love to see more about the characters, specially the animals, so it gives more depth and generates more empathy in the characters. In the broadway show everything passes fast and the sequences are one right after the other so you blink and you miss it.

At the end of "The Wizard and I", Elphaba runs outside of Shiz and stands on a cliff. Beyond her are the Unpassable deserts that separate Oz from the rest of the world. The wizard uses his balloon to cross them, while Dorothy loses her slippers in them at some point when she travels back home at the end of Baum's first book. This is something discussed in detail in Baum's books, but only mentioned in passing during the 1939 movie and the musical. I loved seeing them in person.

I noticed a few nods to the original Oz books that the average person wouldn't notice unless you've read the books. Most were mentioned in this video, I noticed a few more very subtle references. 1, during Wizard and I, Elphaba runs thru a field and sees a desert. That is the desert that surrounds Oz. 2, They showed the people of Oz as described in the books. The munchkins, winkies, and quadlings. I didn't notice any porcelain people. 3, Lions and Tigers and bears make an appearance. 4, the wooden horse in the background before Defying Gravity. The wooden horse debuts in Ozma of Oz and is part of the story to find the missing princess that Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth were singing about. The missing powers they were talking about is Princess Ozma. The 15 original Oz books are still awesome reads today if you want to understand these references yourself.

I've seen this 2x (already) and this one really stood out to me but hard to find online.
In the intro scene into Shiz and the introduction of Miss Coddle there is the start of the build up feud between Elphaba, Miss Coddle and Nessarose in which Miss Coddle states, "Well, isn't this an awkward Gulch" (or something to that nature) but I definitely caught the Gulch word and the association to the Gayle family neighbor Miss Gulch in the MGM Wizard of Oz.

During the opening scene with the song “No One Mourns The Wicked” I heard a little bit of the instrumental to “Ding Dong The Witch is Dead” as the kids were running through the field ringing the bell announcing the death of the wicked witch of the west and the title card is in the same font as the title card in the 1939 MGM movie musical. I also noticed the impassable desert during the song “The Wizard And I” which in Return To Oz is called the deadly desert and the wheelers fall into the desert and some of them fall in and get turned to sand

Have watched in Imax, 3D, and standard (2d) and they are all "great" but Imax was the "swankiest". I was in tears at the Ozdust Ballroom when the two dance. Forgiveness and redemption are powerful story arcs and Jon Chu did it without either of them (Glinda and Elphaba) saying a word. He is Definity up for best director.

    1. Dorothy,Tin man,Cowardly Lion and the scarecrow(Fiyero's other form)can be seen in the beginning of the film. I think Ariana Grande's dog Toulese makes a cameo too.
    2. Idina Menzel and Kirstin Chenworth made a cameo near the end of the film.
    3. The map sorta resembles the map from Harry Potter and the Prisoner Of Azkaban.
    4. Elphaba's true father's identity can be seen in the opening of the film (the wizard Oscar Diggs).
    5. Dorothy's Og slippers can be seen as well as her red shoes.

Regarding the Ruby Slippers, _Wicked_ is actually the first film in the 84 years since _The Wizard of Oz_ debuted to have the full involvement of the IP owner, allowing more imagery from the 1939 classic to be referenced (Dorothy and her friends are instantly recognizable as they appeared in the original film). It's clear, however, that the shoes will retain their appearance as silver jeweled shoes with tornado-inspired heels.

I only check my watch once in the second viewing and was shocked to know that the movie was already 2 hours in. I guess it's because I slowly get used by the song with hearing the soundtrack before watching the movie second time, it gets so much better

I knew that was For Good playing in the background!
That is my favorite song of the musical and to hear the instrumental version of it during the break of my second favorite song, Dancing Through Life, and my ninth favorite song, Popular, is the life! EEP! :)
When I eagerly watched that part when Glinda and Elphaba danced together the way that they did and heard the background music.
I was like in my head,
"Okay, that music sounds awfully familiar. What song could it be from the musical?"
Then I gasped in my head,
"Oh my gosh! It's For Good!"
Sadly, I may have to patiently wait for, For Good, to play out fully in another year.
But, hey, hearing my favorite song actually be foreshadowed in the background by its instrumental version that perfectly works too! EEP! :)

Here’s an Easter egg I noticed!
Elphabas real dad is the Wonderful wizard of Oz
How do I know this? If you watch carefully in the beginning you can see Elphabas mom has another man over. What color if his tux? Green! What’s the wizard of Oz’s fav color? Green! What color is Elphie? GREEN! Knowing the wizard is accutualy evil, trying to hurt the last speakable animals, it gives me the clue that he was evil before/during he had “power”. in the starting of the movie the other man had OZ printed on his glittery green tux. That concludes why I think Elphabas dad is the wizard.
