thanks for this video Oliver. On Amazon I purchased a pair of Qwork slide staining containers for about $10. They each hold 24 slides separated with some space in the removeable rack. I fill it with 50/50 water and alcohol, let them sit, and they come out sparkling clean. Super convenient.
You must be a mind reader Oliver! You keep on making videos about subjects I’m wondering about. Thank you so very much! Your videos are a real God send during these shelter in place times. I’ve always been a great fan, but now more than ever!!!👍👍👍
My SW380T arrived yesterday. Sadly I didn’t realize you had an affiliate link :-((( I was just wondering about cleaning and reusing my slides - danke. Was very excited with first sample from my worm bin... saw microarthropods, nematodes, and a fat little worm that looked like Michelin Man without arms or legs... Could scrunch up in a ball and then extend and move about with the force of it’s pointed tail... head was blunt. Your videos are most instructive.
The problem is not washing them. The problem is the dozens of little specs that still are present on the slide after carefully cleaning them. Ah, look at that bacterium! OH! That's a dust speck on the slide! DRAT! How about this one? DRAT! ......OK, this....DRAT......DRAT.... That is the problem!
How about make a soapy water mixture in a plastic container with a cover, and place all the used slides and covers in them at the end of a session. ...just my thoughts...
I love preparing slides. Cleaning used glass slides with specimen is very time consuming. What i did was I soaked the slides in the water with used xylene so the cover slips will be removed then ill put then in a container with soap.
did you try using a cheap ultra sonic cleaner ? i was thinking about buying one from amazon for about 40€. it should be sufficient to clean most slides with no problem.
3 years ago but I was just wondering, right, could you theoretically just do the same washing process and then dry using a hairdryer or would that cause problems?
It won't harm the slide. Clean compress air would be more efficient to remove the last drop of tap water. If you use distilled or deionized water, you won't get stain.
I've learned to spend more on slides with rounded corners and ground edges at this step, I got cut several times when washing cheap slides with sharp edges :/
@Tiktok Shorts Don't worry, just clean them as soon as you stop using them so they are easy to clean. When I got cut it was because I was scrubbing very hard with a sponge trying to clean very dirty slides that had months sitting.
I have lost a fair amount of feeling in my fingers, cleaning cover slips is very challenging, the slides are not too bad to clean. Do you have a suggestion or know of a way to clean slips without fingers? I hate to be wasteful but also don't want to get cut with such sparp, fine glass shards. Thank you, I am a subscriber! Nice videos!
I use my electric toothbrush with a old brush-attachment on it. Put the slips on your palm and just brush them, rinse, done. Or buy a ultrasonic cleaner
I can find cover glass for 1$ for 100 units. At one cent a piece, I can afford discarding them. I still wash the slide (even if it's about 10 cent a piece). It's easy and quite safe to wash compare to cover glass.
Is it possible to actually buy these clean somewhere. Amazon's a no-go they just throw them in an envelope and ship them. They brake and have stuff all of them
Amazing video as always...well will you make a video on "soil under the microscope"...I mean wet, moist garden soil with some decaying matter.....it will be very nice....Stay blessed...
@@alexandrevaliquette3883 🗿🤙🏽 Deal, Yeah I was thinking of doing like 15psi for maybe a minute if need be, I'm sure 5-10psi for 5 minutes will be more than sufficient. W bro
@@Eliqueme Honestly, I don't bother. If you really worry about safety, you can discard them or soak them in 10% bleach for 30 sec. I wash most of slides, but discard the cover slide. It's a bit hazardous and difficult to clean, it break, it can cut you and it worth 1 cent each on AliExpress anyway.
The cover glasses I received two days ago couldn't be separated no matter what, and they were also really dirty so I tried cleaning them. However, many broke while I tried to separate them, and so I kind of gave up cleaning them. Is there a way to separate sliddes and cover glasses without breaking or chipping the edges?
Try putting them into water. The water will hopefully go between the cover glasses and separate them. They probably stick together because of grease from the manufacturing process. I always use a microfiber cloth (for eyeglasses) for dry-wiping them before use.
As long as the slides do not rub against each other, it should not be a problem. This is the reason why I scrub them individually. Mixing the slides can cause glass parts to chip off and this can scratch and also hurt your fingers.
@@MicrobehunterMicroscopy So can I still use scratched slides? It doesn't affect the image quality but I find it out somewhat disturbing. some slides and cover glasses are still rough (that disturbs me a lot) after cleaning/washing, what should I do to make it as smooth as new?
You can just ditch your worst pathogen/infectious slides on a bleach solution for few minutes. Rince them with tap water, clean them with detergent, fresh water, distilled w. and your free to do another scope session!
I am testing my blood for Graphene Oxide. I have found it in dust samples taken from objects outside. I separate it from the dust using distilled water to wash the sample. A magnet holds the Graphene to the glass and the dust particles wash away. I then put them under a microscope. They are multicolored sort of reminds me of Iron pyrite when white light is applied. Super conductor materials show up this way. The problem is when I test my blood, there seems to be a large amount of graphene in my blood. I am unvaccinated and take no prescription drugs. There should be very little if any in my blood but am finding more than I think I should. It could be the lenses have a dusting of graphene left from previous experiments. I wash using peroxide and dry using a cotton ball. I think I will view the lens under the microscope before using them. Thank you for the video.

I'm new to microscopy and really appreciating your informative videos. thanks so much!
They are easier to clean right after use. Otherwise, the cover slips get stuck.

Question: why won't my glass slip, stick back at my blank slide?
Water as a mounting medium? Maybe some soap was left on the slide so that the mounting medium did not stick?

did u ever wear a mask or have a test?, ive been finding it in the rainwater
also try checking a channel called herbsplusbeadswork, he has an antinano bucket it might be worth checking out
