Just wanted to say thank you to those who have watched and expressed their thoughts here. I was not expecting this video to blow up the way it has over the last few days.
To those of you who are considering subscribing to my channel, I want you to know in advance that I don't usually make this kind of rant/commentary content. I make stuff about games I'm enjoying, revisiting, discovering, etc. I do not have an upload schedule; the videos are done when they are done.
Again, thank you all for your support! I honestly didnt think so many folks have been feeling the same as me when it comes to this. Hope some of you do choose to stick around as it will be great to have a community that can discuss games maturely, civil, and in an interesting way. Hope you all have a marvelous day! ❤

Top tier players in gaming = very toxic, pissing contest, shouting match
Rating systems = this player is valid, that player is not, hyper competitive
Factionalism = hold an opinion or oppose an opinion, choose side, winner take all
Warning: Don't play at a high level, very toxic, very sweaty, hyper competition

Of all the languages you could choose, you chose the language of truth. Most people forgot the value of playing games, enjoying them and talking about them openly. Instead now we find ourselves in a period where these have become secondary elements, in favor of always wanting to be on the side of the most popular opinion

Its a stance I've never understood throughout my life. Why do folks let FOMO dictate their lives so easily? Why not search for stuff that is really interesting instead of trying to be a part of the crowd? Doing so really makes me question if someone really enjoys certain forms of entertainment. There's nothing wrong with participating with flock every now and again, but every single big release? It's no way to live, and its clearly doing something to people's minds.

@@spectrebull Other people can shift public opinion for all time, they cement their thoughts and ideas in the minds of the masses for all time. Perception is reality when viewing entertainment, how a person views a thing can spread to every corner, if a popular youtuber makes the call than a company can suffer in sales.
      Example:
      Dude - " I like this song"
      Girl - " I think it sucks"
Dude - " Yeah it does suck"
TH-camr - " this game is straight trash, don't buy it"
Crowed - " everybody boycott that game"
Observer - " look he has a pattern to him, he is suspect"
People - " I can't un see it now, I will always see it"
Toxic high level players - " you suck, look at your rating, big noob"
Players - " fake rating, cheater, try hard, sweaty freak, grinder, low skill"
Red vs Blue vs Green vs Yellow vs Gold vs Silver vs Crystal

Tell that to the pokemon community when it comes to public opinion of any game after x/y without acknowledging any good that's been in the game and certain content creators milking said topic of how much they suck. *cough* RadicalSoda. Then it gets to the point where they can't make up their mind who to blame whether it's the devs the PC, Nintendo, or the "sheep"

People often forget enjoying play a game and just go too radical in rating them as best/worst. Honestly I play any game for the purpose of fun and not to fanatically praise it or despise it. For example, i enjoy playing pokemon shield and violet, not caring what people say, I just play it and have fun. If only more people saw this video to finally reflect on how people tend to go too radical

  • @mightythunderfoot

The reason why it "matters" that people don't like your game, is because if a game you like isn't well received a couple of things will happen. First, people aren't incentivized to try the game--so the player base could be prevented from growing. Second, The developers could withdraw their support from a game that lots of people are saying they don't like or appreciate. Third, your game won't get a sequel which means this could be the end of your fun. Fourth, and this one's a bit specific, if your game is a multiplayer game and a whole bunch of people are reviewing it poorly, it's going to reduce the pool of people you can play with. Imagine how many people despaired when it came out that Blizzard was up to nasty business. The thought process was something like "great! Now a whole bunch of people are going to stop playing the game, reducing my player pool. Now my friends and stuff are going to judge me for playing... etc." You end up in situations where you have to ask yourself if playing the game is worth it anymore (and in the case of a multiplayer game with a shrinking player base due to negative publicity, that decision might end up being made without you). I'm not saying this is everyone's motivation... but there are real consequences for a game not being well received. Consequences that a lot of people are willing to fight in order to prevent. Again, I'm not condoning toxic attacking--but I am giving context as to why people come after these things with such vigor.

    • @Tethloach1
      @Tethloach1 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Top tier players = very toxic (pissing contest), shouting match, foul play
Shrinking player base = no need for new ideas, stagnation, same few players
Diminishing returns = more effort less fun, gloating, false humility, boredom
What people say or do can effect enjoyment, agree to play nice, fair play

  • @Phirestar
    @Phirestar ปีที่แล้ว +15

A lot of people are just looking to have their opinions validated by other people online. That’s all it comes down to, really.
I think that the overall structures of social media websites have conditioned people into adopting this competitive, “me vs you” attitude. Everything that is done on the internet is, to some extent, for the explicit purpose of garnering attention from others. It is all about chasing that dopamine rush of having all the attention of the masses out onto you. Whoever gets the most clicks wins, and the best way of getting that interaction is through negative actions like hot takes, controversy, and so on, because human beings naturally respond to negative experiences more often and more intensity than positive experiences. It’s called “rage-bait” for a reason.
Personally, I believe a key factor in what drives all of this is the fact that every platform had adopted some form of a rating system for peoples’ posts on the site. Likes and dislikes, upvotes and downvotes, awards systems like you have on Reddit and now Steam. These types of rating systems have simplified the process of how people discuss topics online down to a simple act of democracy, where whoever receives the highest number of like or upvotes is viewed by the public as the “correct opinion”. Be honest with yourselves: you have fallen for this mental bias in the past. Whenever you see feedback on a tweet or a TH-cam video, what are you more focused on: the actual contents of the responses that people give, or how many likes / upvotes they have? Are you looking for the comment that gives an actual critique on the opinions and arguments made in the original content post, or is the comment with 3K likes that just says “bro this is a trash video” sufficient enough for you?
People don’t want to have discussions about games, they don’t want to hear other peoples’ perspectives on a topic. They just want to be told that they’re right and the other person is wrong, so that they can win the “eOlympics”, or whatever you want to call it.

    • @spectrebull
      @spectrebull  ปีที่แล้ว

You are completely right about the need for validation. It has gotten way out of hand and has gone on far too long. Not to bring in politics, but I noticed this behavior becoming more rampant during the 2016 U.S. Presidential Election. There are plenty of stories you can read about people going so far as to cut off family because of different ideals.
I can see where you draw the connection to upvoting and downvoting. Personally, I blame that for opening up the doors to review-bombing. However, I look more at how easy it is to monetize social platforms. On one hand, it's cool that you can make money off of being a fan of something. Heck, Epic is letting Fortnite players make money off their maps and game modes now. But this level of accessibility has also allowed for bad actors to come in and claim to be "fans" while making outrageous "h0t t@kes" and these overly produced videos with exaggerated thumbnails and titles. It's one thing to social engineer your video and really show your passion; it's another to start blowing every other thing out of proportion to rile people up, mass-share your content, all for the sake of raking in the dough. I can respect the hustle to some degree, but there often times where I sit and wonder how some of the bigger content creators feel comfortable putting out stuff they know they don't care much for.
All this to say "where's the passion?", I suppose.

What you describe here is symptomatic of modern society I find. Everybody feels they HAVE to be right, their opinions are the ONLY opinion that matters and that is a shame for society. The arrogance that the anonymity of social media brings fuels the depression of many others. I have depression and anxiety and have struggled with it for years, stepping away from social media and playing none multiplayer games so I didn’t have to deal with the toxicity and the “Karens” of a lobby helped me get a foot hold and manage my symptoms. I would encourage others to give that some thought as it MAY (no guarantees) help them.
Only just came across your channel, about half way through the video subscribed. It’s refreshing to hear someone call out the bad behaviours and give a balanced argument about WHY it’s bad. Keep up the good work and please remember this is YOUR channel for YOUR content and should always reflect you as a person.

What you said kind of circles back to what another viewer pointed out: the search for validation. It never seems to be enough for people to be happy with what they like - they need to enjoy what other people like or else they're the weird one. There is truly a lack of self-honesty these days, and I feel social media has kind of amplified that.

I do not think social media is to blame here. I watch gameplay and reviews from different spectrums for insight before buying a game. For me, we are very fortunate to have public information out there. This saves me money and time that I can allocate for alternative use. People who came before us would be grateful for this. I remember MetalJesusRocks saying there were lots of games that he didn't like. When he worked for Sierra Entertainment, there were plenty of returned games that they would often trade with Activision employees. If there were reviewers at the time, this could have prevented waste.
it's just our human instinct that creates tribalism over simple things like sports, video games, movies, etc. I would only boycott companies that are personally affecting me such as pay-to-win microtransactions, burning businesses, or not protecting children. Honesty, there's no way we can control this other than ourselves. Just disregard all the unnecessary rivalries that are happening and let's enjoy the limited time we have.

People will always use social media now a days to talk about their opinion because they are able to. We need to start taking the internet less seriously and just enjoy our life because it's too short to be worried about what others think.

In all my years watching all the mindless hypocritical crap like youtubers calling Nintendo greedy and money hungry only to turn around and talk for 3 minutes about their sponsor basically doing what they accuse corpo companies are doing.
This video right here, as like opening a window and letting the fresh air of common sense in after years of smelling the same farts that come out of my speakers.
And the best part is, Everything you said was exactly what I was thinking? Why every time a popular game comes out you'll see videos of these "This new game you like isn't all that great" 10 minutes to over an hour "hot take" videos.
I want to go back to the days where when I get the newest 2D Mario or Sonic game where I just play it, Not play one stage and run to my computer to type about how I felt about or see other's opinions. I have seen posts on gamefaqs where people would buy a game and ask the forum if they should open it. YES there are people who need strangers on the web to decide if they like a game or not.
I'm just happy to see at least someone sees the madness online.
This is why I pray for Overwatch 2 to get a fully realize single player story mode, So I can play with my mains in peace and not have to deal with tryhards who hate the character I play and make it their mission to kill that character as much as possible.

I just wish some folks would learn the phrase "this isn't for me" instead of trying to act like their personal tastes are objective criticism. There are so many people who think they know how to design a game because "I played 14000 hours". There were a number of reviews I did on MojoPlays where even if I railed on a game, I'd add that folks who like a certain thing might want to look into it. So, why no one else is doing this is beyond me.

Well, we care basically because we evolved to. Humans are a social spices and caring about opinions of others is a mechanism of social regulation and cohesion.
Issue is we evolved to live in a groups of several dozens of people and now we are dealing with environment of immediate connectives to billions of people and our social regulation mechanism are glitching. One need to put conscientious effort or have an uncommonly robust RL connections environment.
UPD. Also people who just enjoy their games and have calm discussion are not driving 'engagement' and their voices are less multiplied by social media. And marketing teams love this shit because it makes people more susceptible to manipulations.

While you made this video for yourself, this was a really nice and satisfying watch. I get where your coming from with that. Spending so much time on social media talking about games is exhausting and really annoying.
For me it came to a head with Gollum, here's this game no one was ever talking about, until it released and then suddenly everyone had an opinion on it.
And as someone who loves making videos about games, its a tricky balance of figuring out if your making a video because you like it, or because its a really trendy topic that just parrots the common idea about it (whether your interested in it or not.)
Great video, and a nice remainder that games are supposed to be fun, you don't need to engage with social media to enjoy them.

Thank you for your support, Polly!
Everything surrounding Gollum was not at all surprising. I'm actually willing to give folks a pass on Gollum because it is absolutely awful. The stills I showed were chosen because of how frequently TH-camrs and streamers will say that anything less than perfect is worth consideration for Worst Game of the Year. Forspoken, Atomic Heart, Redfall, and Gotham Knights were all games that weren't great, but were they horrible? That's kind of blown out of proportion. I'll make fun of Gotham Knights and Forspoken for the awful writing, but to say they were AWFUL GARBAGE DONT PLAY THIS is such an overblown reaction.
The same applies when it comes to great games. Everyone is so quick to label "GOTY contender". Why not wait until its actually award season? No one does nominations until November. Why are we worrying about this months in advance?

People are crying out for more of what they just experienced. When it is under threat that what someone likes might be coming to an end they try to get it back. And those without good vocabulary or have poor editing skills yell. They are just shouting love in a bizarre way. Like when people were bad-mouthing Shadow of the Tomb Raider it infuriated me because the series future was under question. We know the 2nd failed due to being exclusive to Xbox and Shadow probably underperformed. To get another chance without changes was not huge and it felt like every bad word was lessening it's chance at additional games. Turns out the series had legs and sold enough but in 2018 it wasn't as well seen.

I think part of this is that people get very hyped for the game and when it comea out they feel the need to justify Why they waited for so long, they want the wait to have meaning, so they have to have waited for something exceptional, whether exceptionally bad or exceptionally good.
The hype and the wait before the game should be its own separate thing to enjoy, you can only wait for a game once, and people really dont wanna enjoy that for what it is.

    • @spectrebull

TotalBiscuit (God rest his soul) talked about this many years ago. There's a word for it, but he talked about how in the world of general business, a person will deny the possibility of making a bad purchase if the purchase was expensive. The person doesn't want to believe they made a bad purchase and threw away a chunk of money, and so, they will make some arbitrary personal connection to it.
I don't believe that hype is bad necessarily. However, I think that people need to do a far better job at keeping themselves in check than they have been for the last handful of years. A game does not become a "masterpiece" over a weekend. There needs to be some time after the launch to discuss the game and marinate on it properly.

I think the thing that irks me is if you aren't playing NBA2K, Fall Guys, GTA, Fortnite, Madden, Resident Evil, Roblox, Minecraft, WWE, Tekken, Street Fighter, Marvel games, DC games, Lego games, Mortal Kombat, Mario, Mario Kart, Mario Party, Sonic, Super Smash Bros, Kirby, Metroid, Zelda, Final Fantasy, and Kingdom Hearts then your taste in video games suck. Most of the gaming community can't fathom why someone would like MultiVersus, Brawlhalla, Disney Speedstorm, Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled, Nickelodeon Kart Racers, and Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl. You're only supposed to like Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. You're not allowed to like anything outside of that realm. I just find it a bit crazy how much gamers seem to have giant hate boners for other kart racing games for simply just existing. Anytime they decide to discuss/acknowledge other kart racing games, it's just a 20-30 minute video of them bashing them and sucking off Mario Kart as if it's some god. I love that franchise just like everyone else, but the gaming community acts as if it's the only good kart racer out there. It's just delusional to me. They treat the series as a coming to christ. It's weird. Smash Bros fans do the same thing. The amount of hate that Multiversus gets from them needs to be studied. In my opinion, I just think it's boring asf to be into only game in a genre. I couldn't imagine myself only playing Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. That's some basic bitch shit 😂.

I feel like social media has a super binary culture... That's just how it is, I guess. Sometimes our emotions get the best of us and we lead our lives with said emotions and not logical thinking. It's a shame. There are many games I love that I know are not for everyone, and that's OK. Different strokes for different folks--that's probably a saying so many have forgotten by this point. We desire to know and preach what's "right" and "wrong" when those are some of the most abstract terms that mean different things to different people. I'm glad I don't do social media. (...Says the one leaving a TH-cam comment.)
Hope this gets more views. Even if it is meant to be more personal, this is a message EVERYONE needs to know to not become perceived as basement-dwelling goblins.

I have a super sad story with smash bros about this, may sound dramatic for just a videogame but it really hurts me.
TL;DR: The toxic community and the over competitive feel that videogames have now that internet is massive and singleplayer experiences are heavily devalued made me hate a game that i loved.
Smash Bros could be my favorite videogame franchise of all time, since i was young i played from 64 through ultimate, and i have some of my happier gaming memories and even some life memories over that game, i loved smash 4 on my silly little 3DS,
When smash 4 came, i had like 14, so i really wasnt interested on being part of a community, but when the ultimate hype started, i also wanted to join the internet hype, so i became part of the smash bros community, and i swear it was the worst mistake i could've done.
Shit was rancid, it progresively got worse, people started dumb discussions about "which characters DESERVED to be added", people being toxic over who they wanted to join the game, people being toxic on whose got added, people being toxic if you played a certain character, and it truly burned me down to the point that i cant stand that game.
I also got super salty over the online, i enjoyed all smash games as mostly singleplayer with the occasional plays with friends or family, but competitive smash kinda destroyed my enjoyment of the game, that inherit need to win online just messed me and now i can't enjoy the game, it doesnt help that a lot of people online dont play to have fun, just to win even if they play boring and lame, i got tilted
And it breaks my heart man, the game is my absolute dream with almost all the characters i like both in DLCs and base roster, hell, DLC pass 1 was crazy for me, 3 out of 5 characters not only i liked, but are literally the characters i wished themost and they got announced back to back, Joker, Banjo and Terry, and the other 2 i like them and found them super funnto play, but i can't fully enjoy all of that because internet poisoned me. Also yeah, all the p*dos and creeps that the community exposed one after the other was the straw that broke the camels back for me.
I know i should be able to ignore those things and just enjoy the game, but i swear i cant, internet and social media changed my perspective of that game and i can't go back no matter how i try, i genuinely cant even play the game for 5 minutes.

It's for this reason that I unistalled Twitter and Instagram on my phone, it was starting to effect the way I felt irl. I limited myself to only looking at them on my computer which has drastically cut down the time I spend on them and I honestly don't really think about it much, until recently with Summer Game Fest I wanted to see the reactions to the announcements. It's like you said, really just step out and try what you think you'll enjoy. Nowadays I wait to wait reviews until after I played the game so I can form my own opinion, then see what the consensus is afterward and it's been really fun trying to guess what the consensus will e and comparing it to my own thoughts

You should get rid of all of it. Literally serves no purpose other than to spread the thoughts of others onto others. Not something you want. Twitter, reddit, whatever. I guess TH-cam kinda counts, but I've been using this since forever and not for the social media part.

Even with the limited attention I give social media, it was really bothering, mostly because of how frequent the hyperbolic behavior has become.
That is somewhat how I approach games now. I'll play it myself based on if I see something cool. I will gladly admit I've made some purchases where I felt jipped: Shadow of Loot Box, Ghostwire: Tokyo, Fallout 76 at launch, No Man's Sky at launch... Buying anything is a gamble if you don't know what you truly value about certain products. But the discussions I saw AFTER I already played them were certainly enjoyable.

The way the whole attention meta wheel works is totally like that. But i think that the people who don't get into it simply don't interact with it at all, so are very silent.
That is not to say there are the people who are like that, and the people who aren't. We all are shades of grey here
    Anyway, nice vid!

It stops when, 10 out of 10, stops! Also, I hated Breath of the Wild before the sheeple turned on it for it’s _okay_ sequel! Hah! Wolfenstein: Youngblood and Breath of the Wild were eye opening to me when I played both and experienced the _exact_ reverse of internet and outlet rhetoric. Youngblood is one of the greatest action games _I’ve ever played_ and Breath of the Wild isn’t even a game, it’s a sadistic, poorly made, tedious and ugly tech demo. Breath of the Wild is pretty much Nintendo’s equivalent of a Unity asset swap masquerading as a game, sold at full retail price.
    Great Stuff!

I agree with a lo ltvof what you said. The conversation around games has grown very binary where it's either good or bad. There's a lack of nuance to why people enjoy a game wether the game is decent or just bad. Let's take something like Superman 64 as an example. I'm sure most would consider it a bad game. The concept is bad, the controls aren't the greatest, and it looks quite terrible even for the standards at the time. But one thing that seems to be considered among people is that the game is so historically bad that when developing you try and play the game for yourself to experience it's shortcomings. This way you can avoid making the same mistakes as Superman 64 did all those years ago.

You Earned a sub. I'm somebody who loves tank controls in traditional survival horror And I feel like a slap in the face when I see people hating the genre And hating on the tank controls that I'm so used to playing with. I grew up playing Resident Evil 2 and 3 and got used to the tank controls Resident Evil remake on the game cube was a masterpiece. But when they threw out the tank controls and threw out the fixed camera angles It started playing like gears of war It lost its uniqueness. I still enjoy the later games. It's just it's not the same as the original games with fix camera angles in the tank controls.

Yes is it simple just play games enjoy why seeing the reviews all that like we used to do in childhood pick a game and play simple now i am also feeling like since 3 years i am being very critical of games thier animation lore all that bullshit because of seeing those cheap reviews this happens to me same with the movies now i dont see movies or play games like i used to like seeing a game with my own eyes not with others eyes . But i dont know after knowing all this why i still see those those bullshit things can anybody tell me. I am very addicted to them seriously youtube has been changed into something else . I really miss the time before all this social media shit where we used to pick up games and buy a ps2 and play it enjoy it simple as that . Now games feel like something like a big event i dont know what to say all this game of the year ign all this has just corrupted my mind this google and youtube is just bullshit i dont like it but what can i do if i have seen too much and consumed too mucb reviews till now now i cant remove the knowledge from my mind . Now i no longer see the games like i used to . It feels very sad i just imagine what i used to be if all this social media hasnt came😢😢

I wouldnt necessarily say games are getting worse, but the mainstream is certainly not treating the medium with any decency. I place much of the blame on social media because of how many people are screaming "GOTY" or "worst gaem ever" without any explanation or nuance.

Thanks for the video, it verbalizes some things ive been thinking about, mostly about how theres no real room for nuance. That you are shamed for showing genuine interest in things outside of your social groups, that things are about being "right" and not about being "what you think".
Ive actually shifted to reading amuetur novels on sites like royal road and literature in general more than i used to game simply because its not a popular sphere to let the convo stagnate. You can talk about this stuff in the comments or with friends who maybe read those stories, or you know, just absorb it and move on, though maybe this is just my self actualization happening as i reach 30, who can say.
