    OK, so this is BS. Slip rates in Marina del Rey for this boat would be a minimum of $1,087/ month. There is a 50% live aboard fee which would add another $543, or a total of $1,630/ month. Still cheap, but the waiting list is years long. Also, the Carver is a great boat to live on as it is so well laid out. However, the cheapest Carver 40 footer listed in the US is $94,000, and it’s a real beater. Still pretty cheap, but let’s assume mommy and daddy don’t buy the boat for you, so that means a payment of about $2,500/ month. There you have it, $4,000 a month, the same as an apartment that you don’t have to empty the sewage tanks on every week.

    My second home is a boat. The slip is $3300 a year. Two beds, kitchen and bath. The best time of the year is when everyone else is gone. Its on a lake, not the ocean, but it is like having a 50,000 private lake. Best time is at night. Nothing on earth compares to the stars. Food is great too, fresh wild fish is better than anything from a store.

    This is like the equivalent of showing someone’s house, and saying they live there for only $400 a month because that’s what they pay in property tax.

    • @overcastfriday81
      @overcastfriday81 4 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      Agreed. And to keep it simple, let's say we avoid unexpected repairs by financing a brand new 40' powerboat. Add those monthly payments to the slip. He might also have to pay for parking, and separate for utilties.
      On a separate note, I'm surprised MDR even allows it.

      To live on the coast in any major American city would cost almost 10x in taxes a month lol.. I live in Chicago and lake front property would cost 1m plus renovations.. My ass would pucker to here the taxes lmao

      Keith miller I also live in Chicago at the moment, and the property tax (and the taxes in general) here is insane. However, I grew up in Texas, and used the average property tax on an average house in an area like Dallas to make that comparison. I think we can all agree though that this video is ridiculous clickbait.

    Bryce has the right idea. I lived on a 38’ Carver in the Miami Beach marina back in the 90’s and had a blast. Life was never so simple and carefree, with extremely low overhead. Of course , I screwed it up, and bought another house, filled it with stuff I didn’t need,. It’s what humans do I guess. Congrats Bryce, enjoy every minute of it.

    This is deceptive: ask any dock master in Marina del Rey and they will tell you "No live aboards". That means someone paying to dock their boat can stay 3 days and 2 nights per week. If you are sneaking around (as I've known a few people to do), the dock master can call the Sheriff and site you for trespassing or "evict you". Believe me, the dock master in Basin D talks to the dock master in Basin A so word gets out and you may not be welcome at Marina del Rey.

    I've thought of doing this, but in the end it's just an RV in the water. Has all the same advantages and drawbacks, but a boat is probably more maintenance than a travel trailer. It would be kinda fun, but it's really impractical, and the money savings may prove to be less than at first glance.... If any at all. With a roommate you can get a 2 bedroom apartment in a suburb of LA for around the same price.

    Update to anyone interested in this in 2021, I just started doing a liveaboard on a 35' boat and it is $1280 a month in Marina del Ray. This is after a 42500 boat cost and boat loans typically work differently than car loans so it's much better to save up the cash and avoid a loan.

    • @CarCrazyGhost

      why avoid the loan... curious cause im thinking of buying a 175k boat and i def dont have that kind of money.

      @@CarCrazyGhost When I first started looking at boats I started with a Yacht broker and I was told boats past the (I think) the 25 year mark are much harder to qualify for a loan. Plus to organize everything with the bank and the boat owners I would have needed a broker which he said he was asking for a 10 F'ing percent fee. So I went for a cheaper boat I could pay cash for. Best decision I could have made.

    • @CarCrazyGhost
      @CarCrazyGhost 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well I'm thinking to me this is a house on the water.. so even paying a broker fee wouldn't that be like paying closing costs to a lawyer anyway? And there's no yearly property tax on boats so we all save there anyway right?

    • @robertkrisp
      @robertkrisp 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@CarCrazyGhost It all depends on what you have budgeted for I guess. It's no fun cutting a 10k check to anyone for just a couple days of services. Don't forget even if you can swing a 2k a month boat payment, you still need to factor in slip cost and the liveaboard costs (typically .5 times the cost of the slip)(800 for a slip + 400 for liveaboard status) and factor in the haul outs and typical boat maintenance.

      It's not clickbait.. Show me how a working class or lower person could live relatively comfortable for that much in any major American coastal city.. Taxes alone would break you not including the investment to purchase the coastal property lol.. I live in Chicago and the taxes alone on a lake front studio apartment would be at least 8x that. Sure boats depreciate and you're renting the slip... Living in multiple cities up and down the coast is pretty appealing though..

However, before anyone decides to rush down to the marina to do this, a key missing piece of information is that no marina in Marina del Rey allows more than 10% of its slips to be “live aboard”, meaning your unable to spend more than 3 days per week on the boat which is monitored by key entry and exit. Many of the marina’s in either don’t allow any live aboard (Newport Beach) a or have multi year waiting lists.

      Sailing Soulianis- couple starting out on their first sailing adventure.
      Distant Shores- OG of sailing VLOGS. have been making syndicated TV programs about their adventures since the 90s, now also have a youtube channel.

    I have been doing Live Aboard's since I was 19 when I bought my first Cabin Cruiser. I am on my fourth boat and it is a Pilot House Cutter Sailboat built by the Wooden Boat School of Port Townsend Wa. I grew up commercial fishing, my last job was as a Yacht Broker and I have owned Powered Boats since age 10. They do not mention several things associated with living on your boat. First you have to live light, you do not have room for extra possessions, Week ends are Hell with the Week End Warriors who really have no business owning a boat, Heating is not an issue in LA but it is here on the Columbia River and boats are not normally insulated (Mine is), Cooking in the Galley takes planning to make it easier, Yes we also use Paper Plates and Plastic Silverware because washing dishes is a pain. The major fact that they left out is that you spend about 10% of what the boat cost every Year in maintenance. Personally I will never move back to land, I enjoy this lifestyle too much to switch.
