"Get up, come on get down with the sickness. You wanna get up, come on get down with the sickness." Is the lyric. He actually recently stopped a concert because there was a little girl in the front row that got scared. He stopped the entire show turned the house lights on climbed down and talked to her to let her see that he is just a man. SUPER heart warming if you wanna check out a non musical video.

I've seen that! the way he talked to her was so lovely, and then included everyone to show her that there's nothing to be scared of. That they're all there to celebrate the music together, no matter who they are. Simply brilliant. I could listen to David read the dictionary lol

I'm 35 and have been binge watching his transition to a full blown metal head in front of my eyes and it's been a wild ride compared to his opinion on rock before falling in reverse which started it all. Mettalica ABSOLUTELY hell throw some godsmack in there to spice it up even more. There are so many good metel/rock songs he must hear before he dies it's a necessity at this point.

This song is about how society treats people who are "different." A lot of people think they are "sick" and "wrong" and want nothing to do with them.
In the middle of the song, lead singer David Draiman acts out a skit where he is being abused by his mother (not in the radio version). Finally, he builds up enough courage and hits her right back. This is used to symbolize how "mother society" abuses "her" children for not being the way "she" thinks they should. "She" keeps doing it until "her" children get sick of it and are so angry with her and themselves they go out and get revenge for it, most likely by killing the people that hurt them ("here it comes, get ready to die!") A good example of this would be the school shootings that go on around the country.
Getting "Down With The Sickness" means accepting people for who they are so we can all function better.

It's super impressive how you picked up the meaning of "The Sickness" so quickly. In David's own words, "the sickness" is a metaphor for how society and the media sees and depicts metalheads, which at the time especially, was largely viewed as wrong or "being sick in the head" type of thing. He wants people to embrace that feeling rather than reject it.

David Draiman is an amazing vocalists! I am so happy that you recognize that. I love the pure joy you have when you are listening to something you enjoy. The line that you couldn't figure out what he was saying was "Get up, come on get down with the sickness". I love this band, I have seen them in concert a couple times, when I was younger. Here is my TMI about Mr. Draiman: He is a gentleman! Very classy and all around amazing. The first Disturbed concert I went to was at a festival, so it was all lawn seating. I was near the back of the crowd and this jerk thought it would be funny to grab me, pick me up, and throw me into the crowd! Before I even knew what was happening I was flying and the crowd surfing. I was terrified. It was awful people were taking advantage and grabbing me in places that no one should touch without concent. I was screaming and just generally freaking out. David stopped the band and started yelling at the crowd calling the guys disrespectful peices of ****. Security came over and carried me up front. David had security kick some of the guys out. I was a freaking mess, my clothes were torn I was crying and shaking. He asked if I was okay, I said not really and he asked if he could give me a hug. He gives great hugs! He told me he was sorry that happened to me and had security bring a chair and let me sit on the side of the stage for the rest of the performance. He made sure I had water and a towel, they brought me a shirt since mi lne was torn.
What had started out as a terrifying and traumatic experience, turned into an experience of a life time and a hug I will never forget from a kind man.

They are one of my favorite bands!!! and I was so happy when they came to perform in my town a few years ago!!!
I grew up on them and they are such an amazing band, such amazing people and they're so good live!!!
I love how you dive into music as music, and recognize how good it is, no matter the genre, and how the singer is a true artist and a poet.
It really means a lot to me as a Rock fan.
A lot of people dispiss it as just noise with no meaning, but you are "The Master" of meaning, and you care a lot about it. I really love that about you as a reactor and as a fellow lover of meaningful music.
And In case you didn't read the lyrics, they're kinda harsh...
    "Can you feel that?
    Ah, shit
    Oh, ah, ah, ah, ah
    Oh, ah, ah, ah, ah
oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Drowning deep in my sea of loathing
    Broken your servant I kneel
(Will you give in to me?)
It seems what's left of my human side
    Is slowly changing in me
(Will you give in to me?)
    Looking at my own reflection
    When suddenly it changes
    Violently it changes (oh no)
There is no turning back now
You've woken up the demon in me
Get up, come on get down with the sickness
Get up, come on get down with the sickness
Get up, come on get down with the sickness
Open up your hate, and let it flow into me
Get up, come on get down with the sickness
You mother get up come on get down with the sickness
You fucker get up come on get down with the sickness
Madness is the gift, that has been given to me
I can see inside you, the sickness is rising
Don't try to deny what you feel
(Will you give in to me?)
It seems that all that was good has died
    And is decaying in me
(Will you give in to me?)
It seems you're having some trouble
    In dealing with these changes
Living with these changes (oh no)
The world is a scary place
Now that you've woken up the demon in me
Get up, come on get down with the sickness
Get up, come on get down with the sickness
Get up, come on get down with the sickness
Open up your hate, and let it flow into me
Get up, come on get down with the sickness
You mother get up come on get down with the sickness
You fucker get up come on get down with the sickness
Madness is the gift, that has been given to me
No mommy, don't do it again
    Don't do it again
    I'll be a good boy
    I'll be a good boy, I promise
    No mommy don't hit me
Why did you have to hit me like that, mommy?
Don't do it, you're hurting me
Why did you have to be such a bitch
    Why don't you
Why don't you just fuck off and die
Why can't you just fuck off and die
Why can't you just leave here and die
Never stick your hand in my face again bitch
    Fuck you
    I don't need this shit
You stupid sadistic abusive fucking whore
How would you like to see how it feels mommy
Here it comes, get ready to die
    Oh, ah, ah, ah, ah
Get up, come on get down with the sickness
Get up, come on get down with the sickness
Get up, come on get down with the sickness
Open up your hate, and let it flow into me
Get up, come on get down with the sickness
You mother get up come on get down with the sickness
You fucker get up come on get down with the sickness
Madness has now come over me"

While I absolutely loved your FIR reactions with their comedic highlights, I think this is my favorite rock reaction of yours because of your genuine willingness to let the music effect you viscerally and your artistic intellect to recognize David (singer of Disturbed) as an artist and poet. You react to music much in the same way a lot of rock/metal heads do. It’s not about anger - it’s about emotion, release, and having something that expresses what we may not be able to with words. Thanks for going on this journey Teddy!

@@sejbomb I never really experienced those people and I'm not sorry that I missed them, haha. I found BVB about twelve years ago, they have been my favourite band ever since and I am so happy for it because I really hate pop music. KPOP was a way for me to get what liked about pop music but without what I hated as well. Anyway, if there was ever anger in rock song, it was always righteous in a way to me but any emotion in rock has never been misplaced, it is always directed somewhere and I love that. I found more sadness as a theme than anything but sadness and rage go hand-in-hand for me. I'm happier listening to a sad (and/or angry) song than any other because rock and alternative genres taught me so much about how all emotions are healthy and hearing an emotionally sad song taught me that I wasn't the only sad person in the world. It makes me happy to know that my experiences and emotions are shared by legions of others and that we can all come together under the beauty of music is very amazing.
Anyway, I just had this realization now but it makes realize that I would be a very different person in a much worse mental place if it wasn't for Black Veil Brides and the world they opened up to me. The first song, I couldn't understand a word but I was moved in a way I had never been before and like a junkie, I chased that feeling and what gave it to me and here I am twelve years later. Thank you, so very much!

The weird noise in the chorus is called a harmonic. It's made by softly touching your finger on the string and metal part that seperates the frets on the guitar, and playing the string.

David Draiman, the vocalist, is a professionally trained opera singer which gives him a very unique voice
This song is about the constant struggle of individuals to break out from under the thumb of the societies that try to beat them into submission; the nails refusing to be hammered flat if you will

My interpretation of the song is those times in life when someone hurts you so badly that you are forced to get angry and protect yourself, that's the sickness. It's the anger you feel in that moment, giving you the strength to fight back. He stopped being a victim and started leveling the playing field. This ability to fight back is "the gift" that he talks about. Being angry at the world for hurting us seems to be the theme of all hard metal music. But, deep down we're just a bunch of good guys at heart that want to have fun.

That is a sound on a guitar called a “harmonic”, there are harmonic over and under tones. Essentially what happens is the lend of the string, when you break it up to different lengths the strings make a noise based on the length and diameter of a string; also how instruments make different tones because the distance the air travels is longer or shorter. Normally you push down the string and it stops vibrating where the metal fret wire is, and that’s how we make different pitches on a guitar, violin, etc. On guitars, you don’t have to push the fret down the entire way, as long as you touch it in the correct place, half the length of the string, a third of the length of the string, 2/3’s the length of the string. It’s a very light touch in the correct place above a fret, and it allows the string to vibrate on it’s originally tone, but also allows a secondary tone for the other side of where your finger touched the string. So they’re vibrating on multiple, usually complimentary wavelengths. It is much easier to hear the extremes on electric guitars with amplifiers, but they are there on even acoustic guitars. Then when things get more complicated you can make “artificial harmonics” that are even more harsh because the tones aren’t as complimentary to each other, or happening at more unnatural places. There are other tapped harmonics that you can do on a string because you’re fretting it in one place, changing it’s length, and then tapping the string with another finger to get the natural over/under tone for what the remaining length of the string is there. It’s amazing how versatile many instruments can be and what people are able to figure out with them over the centuries. I love your reaction and how much you’re just taking it in and getting into it. As others have said, the album version (not radio edit) gets into how troubled he is, the abuse from his mom, and him becoming that sickness; he’s a victim.

YEs I’ve been waiting for Disturbed just so I could recommend Sound of Silence (although their entire discography is amazing❤) David Draiman’s voice is second to none. A lot of their songs are actually mean to be more introspective- DD has dealt with mental illness and some really traumatic events in his life (his gf at 18 committed the big S) so he writes a lot about the struggle with his demons and the dark sides of himself (aka “the sickness”).

  • @Adam_Marsh
    @Adam_Marsh ปีที่แล้ว +1

The beeps are called harmonics. They're produced on a guitar by lightly placing a finger on a string at points on a guitar where certain resonances can ring out - 5th fret, 7th fret, 12th fret. It can all be described using maths, but that goes beyond the scope of the brief explanation.

Lyrics to Down With The Sickness
    Can you feel that?
    Ah, shit
    Oh, ah, ah, ah, ah
    Oh, ah, ah, ah, ah
oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh
Drowning deep in my sea of loathing
    Broken your servant I kneel
(Will you give in to me?)
It seems what's left of my human side
    Is slowly changing in me
(Will you give in to me?)
    Looking at my own reflection
    When suddenly it changes
    Violently it changes (oh no)
There is no turning back now
You've woken up the demon in me
Get up, come on get down with the sickness
Get up, come on get down with the sickness
Get up, come on get down with the sickness
Open up your hate, and let it flow into me
Get up, come on get down with the sickness
You mother get up come on get down with the sickness
You fucker get up come on get down with the sickness
Madness is the gift, that has been given to me
I can see inside you, the sickness is rising
Don't try to deny what you feel
(Will you give in to me?)
It seems that all that was good has died
    And is decaying in me
(Will you give in to me?)
It seems you're having some trouble
    In dealing with these changes
Living with these changes (oh no)
The world is a scary place
Now that you've woken up the demon in me
Get up, come on get down with the sickness
Get up, come on get down with the sickness
Get up, come on get down with the sickness
Open up your hate, and let it flow into me
Get up, come on get down with the sickness
You mother get up come on get down with the sickness
You fucker get up come on get down with the sickness
Madness is the gift, that has been given to me
No mommy, don't do it again
    Don't do it again
    I'll be a good boy
    I'll be a good boy, I promise
    No mommy don't hit me
Why did you have to hit me like that, mommy?
Don't do it, you're hurting me
Why did you have to be such a bitch
    Why don't you
Why don't you just fuck off and die
Why can't you just fuck off and die
Why can't you just leave here and die
Never stick your hand in my face again bitch
    Fuck you
    I don't need this shit
You stupid sadistic abusive fucking whore
How would you like to see how it feels mommy
Here it comes, get ready to die
    Oh, ah, ah, ah, ah
Get up, come on get down with the sickness
Get up, come on get down with the sickness
Get up, come on get down with the sickness
Open up your hate, and let it flow into me
Get up, come on get down with the sickness
You mother get up come on get down with the sickness
You fucker get up come on get down with the sickness
Madness has now come over me

I know this comment is late, but I have to say this. When you said that the lyrics are like poetry, you just blew my damned mind. I know that poetry and music lyrics have a lot in common, but I would never have thought to put the two of them together like you did with Disturbed in under 7 minutes. And I've been listening to Disturbed for many, many years. I told my husband about it who has been a rock and heavy metal fan for like, at least 3 decades and I saw the same bomb go off in his head as well.
So thank you for opening our minds to a new way to enjoy and embrace music, my friend.

Rock and especially hard rock/metal as sub- genre like pretty much all music genres is a very diverse genre. You can find not only a lot of variety in sounds but also in content. Some entertaining, some inspirational, some thought provoking, some cathartic, some saddening, some frightening. Some disturbing. Some heartwarming. Some motivational. Back in the 60s rock songs were often protest songs again the war. Even now some rock songs are anti war songs. Disturbed even personally has not only such protest songs (or has done covers of other bands anti-war songs) but they even have a climate change/anti reckless consumerism song called "Another way to die". They also have a song about suicide called "Inside the fire" that is semi-auto-boigraphical if the lead sings past and how he felt as a teen after his girlfriend/ex-girlfriend killed herself. Hard rock and metal especially can be very profound in the things they cover. Sadly when most people think of metal they think of screaming and death metal (I personally even thought this way when I was young even as I unknowingly listened to lighter heavy metal bands thinking they were hard rock).

You randomly popped up in my feed, and now i can't stop watching your videos. This was my music in my 20s, it's really cool seeing someone hear it for the first time. I remember when I would hear new albums back then and it was like magic. It would provoke raw energy, and I still feel it today when I revisit them. However, nothing that I've even encountered in life since those days has replicated the feeling of seeing my music live back then. It was like a violent mass hypnotism. It's a though everyone was in a shared trance. Everyone was moving, rowdy and lost in the music, yet as rowdy and seemingly violent the crowd looked, there was a bond, a love, that everyone shared when that band played. Probably sounds stupid or crazy, but it was amazing, I miss it very much.

The reason a lot of us have nostalgia for rock music is because its typically very emotionally written. A lot of rock and metal songs are about serious topics like drug addiction, mental illness, war, loss, and suicide, all very relatable topics that the typical person understands, but a very unfortunate lot can personally relate to. Rap music doesnt resonate with me because I grew up in the city experiencing gang violence and drinking lean at house parties. Rock music resonates with me because I was a socially stunted autistic child with divorced parents in a small town that was addicted to pain killers and had an abusive dad, and when you're 12, you cant punch your dad, and you cant punch a hole in your dads wall, so you just scream internally and listen to slipknot, like any other central U.S. suburbanite kid with divorced parents living in the country with a struggling household
