      OpheliacsLament That is the one thing I don’t think people can understand until they have experienced it. It always makes me laugh when someone sees the pit and are terrified. Honesty, that is one of the safest places you can be. Sure, you might get nudged and pushed around a little bit, but that is because the entire pit becomes a single moving entity. However, as soon as some idiot gets a little to excited and carried away, the crowd will fix that there and then...and if the pit misses it, the band doesn’t and set things straight immediately. It’s a good family to be part of. 🤘🏻

      @@maggiereneemusic there's something to this to be honest. You use your false chords usually for these growls when done properly. I find it hard to find the right oral and throat positioning at first when I do it and sometimes later because I'm new to it. But when I find those spots it's damn near effortless. No real strain and I can easily switch to cleans with no issue. Sometimes it drags up some phlem though which fucks with me when I do a quick switch from time to time.
      The interesting part is that these extreme vocals aren't nearly as loud as you might think. Depending on what pitch you want and how much air you give it and other stuff it can be pretty much middle of the road volume!

      @@NurBull the false cords aren't impacted by sexual dimorphism. They are just flaps of tissue that evolved to close the trachea when we need to generate internal abdomenal pressure to lift a heavy weight or push out a hard turd. So there isn't female false cord growling and male false cord growling - fry screaming is a bit different because the sound is partially done with the vocal cords though which is where most people's idea of what a femal growler or screamer sounds like. The size of the instrument matters though, so when you listen to the best male growlers like Alex Terrible from Slaughter To Prevail and Randy Blythe from Lamb Of God, they can effortlessly growl as low as the lowest growls Tatiana can push for and can push even lower. Tatiana isn't doing her low growls here, btw - this is just a bit lower than her most comfortable default growls. If you want to see how low she can go, check out Who Is Gonna Be The One official live for a classic performance or Pit Of Consciousness live in Kiev for a more modern performance of her really low growls.

    Metal vocalist here! She uses the same sort of growling technique that I do, which utilizes the false vocal folds to make those noises. The vocal chords themselves are relaxed and not doing anything while she's growling, and the sound of it of course comes down to individual physiology, some people will simply have a different pitch range than others, regardless of what their actual voice sounds like. Breath support is very important, and the sound should feel as though its coming from the front of your face, above the mouth. If you'd like a more thorough explanation, I'd highly recommend watching The Zen of Screaming by Melissa Cross. Hope this explains what she's doing at least a little bit, cheers!

    • @tevildo9383
      @tevildo9383 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Are the vocal chords completely relaxed? I know for my growls I use both false chord and fry in conjunction with a good amount of compression to make one sound. And as far I know it’s completely safe and it doesn’t hurt at all, and I can hold a growl for ~10 seconds.

    • @werewolf2003002
      @werewolf2003002 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @@tevildo9383 For me yes, I find that if I try to add my vocal chords into my growls it hurts and wrecks my voice near immediately. From what I can hear it sounds as though that's what Tatiana is doing as well, though this is going to come down to individual physiology of course. Devin Townsend and Joe Duplantier for example both seem to have the ability to mix and match their false chords and their vocal chords without much or any penalty, but people that can do that seem to be rather few and far between.

    • @tevildo9383
      @tevildo9383 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@werewolf2003002 Interesting. With my vocals, I can reverse engineer the entire sound down into the 3 individual parts (false chord, fry, and compression). But I find it completely different from trying to add vocal tone over the false chord growl, which is something that I cannot do yet.

    • @jamescurfman3284
      @jamescurfman3284 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@tevildo9383 I think the vocal chords are SUPPOSED to be relaxed. This way, you can do screams/growls AND clean vocals without one type hurting the other. I missed most of the premiere so watching again. I've seen nearly every Jinjer reaction on YT, and yours might just be the very best of all of them. Kudos for checking out the lyrics and researching growling technique. :D Unfortunately, this video is only live-ish, with a lot of post-production editing. That said, I've seen them twice and Tatiana is amazing in concert. Perennial live at Wacken (pronounced "Vah-ken" cuz it is in Germany) is a great video showing what she can do on stage. It is the last song in the set and at the end Tatiana is obviously out of breath, but you wouldn't have known from her singing.
    Btw, Tati was inspired to sing metal by hearing another female growler Otep and being shocked when she found out that Otep is a woman. Now she's passing on that feeling to others. ;) Ghost Flowers from the Confrontation DVD is a good video by Otep.
    To put her growls into perspective, she spent 4 years practicing growls while singing with clean vocals in various bands before starting to perform with growls, she _says_ her growls were still terrible at that point and only got good after performing with growls for part of 2009 in another band before she was recruited to join Jinjer as the original vocalist was leaving. And then she's been performing with growls another decade after that and is steadily improving her technique constantly. Another legendary growler Randy Blythe was a classically trained singer who first tried growling as a joke but then started doing it professionally - he worked with Melissa Cross to perfect his technique and learn to protect his vocal cords too though.
    Tatiana's anger and frustration is heavily rooted in environmentalism, with a secondary focus on freedom of thought and expression, and antipathy toward authority and mass culture. About 2/3 of their songs have some kind of environmental, social, or political theme. Having grown up in the wake of the Soviet collapse, but also dealing with the entrenched Soviet culture and environmental destruction caused by that regime certainly plays into it. Tati also struggles with chronic depression, and that feeds into some of their songs like "Pisces", "Perennial", and "Pit Of Consciousness". Leaving everything behind when the fled the war burned their bridges behind them, so they had nothing left but the band and the imperative to succeed at all costs to give that sacrifice meaning. Since then they have been touring nearly constantly until the pandemic forced them to take an extended vacation. Their songs "I Want It I'll Get It", "When Two Empires Collide", and "Home Back" are about the war and having to leave their homes.
    If you are interested in a deep dive on who Tatiana is, there is an interview with her in Psychology Today that has an enormous amount of information about her as a person, musician, and about the band as well. It is quite sad to read, but she seems to be doing better these days since she's been dating (and now engaged to?) Alex Lopez, the drummer of another up-and-coming metal band called Suicide Silence. Though as a rule, relationships don't fix that stuff, at least it can hopefully make the struggle more bearable.
    p.s. cute lion emogi. She certainly roars. If you see a video of her at Wacken, she has a throat tattoo of the face of the mesoamerican dragon-god of wind and learning, Quetzalcoatl, and the throat chakra represents the power of communication so that seems appropriate.

    I've been a death metal vocalist for several years, and even I don't like the descriptions used in the "tutorial" you were looking at. I NEVER forcefully exhale, and If you look at Tatiana as she's doing her growled vocals, she looks very relaxed, as it should be. Watch her neck when she's growling, it looks quite relaxed, if she were forcing, as the tutorial suggested, it would be VERY obvious.
    What I would suggest, if you really want to find out more about this form of singing, and how it's done, even just out of curiosity, is to look up a DVD called "The Zen of Screaming" it's how I learned to perfect my death metal vocal style. It's a professional vocal coach who has trained a great many very famous vocalists in metal.

    They said in an interview that they added some vocal overdubs, but she doesn't sound much different live. The Pisces theme fits the dual vocals perfectly. The sign of Pisces has 2 fish swimming in opposite directions, and this represents her internal conflict. She wants love ( "being hooked" ), but is "skittish" because of bad experiences she's had in the past at the hands of "callous men" and "handsome butchers". I take it "emeralds being ripped away" refers to her iridescent fish scales. One reactor said that her voice change reminded him of his ex-wife - before, and after marriage.

    I have read, and the band has reiterated in interviews, that their method of composition is unique. For most of their tracks, the guys write pieces of music. They don’t yet have titles, lyrics or melodies. They present these pieces of music to Tatiana, who writes the lyrics, titles and determines the melodies and where/when she will transition from clean vocals to extreme and back. She writes deep and meaningful poetry. She does her own makeup and even makes many of her outfits. She is also a photographer, an artist (paint)... Simply amazing. The band members are all top notch musicians.

    Healthy growls will happen in the false vocal folds (usually) at a fairly low volume and then resonate in the soft palette and nasal passage. Adjusting your mouth shape as well as the amount of tension in your cheeks will allow you to produce different pitches and tones.
    This is much different than adding some fry to your vocals which uses your true vocal folds.
    If you're doing it correctly, just as with singing, you should feel no pain and shouldn't feel worn out from it unless it's a lengthy set.

    Your face at 10:53 is the inspiration for songs like this. Everyone's felt a feeling that makes you scrunch your face with emotion, whether it's anger, despair, power etc. Metal channels that in music form.
    I think metal is lost on a lot of people who assume it's just noise for angry men. Jinjer's contrast between cleans and gutterals short cuircuits this because you get to see why the growls are used and how beautiful they can be. Anger and power have their place, and more people need to let theirs out in a healthy, productive way.

    This song has literally reaction after reaction in minutes! Also I recommend a band called Spiritbox. They also have a female vocalist and believe me, you're going to be either relaxed or moshing when you hear their song "Blessed Be".

    So, now the can of worms is open.
    If you want to see the grand godmother of female growling and guttural extreme paired with brutal but melodic instrumental excellence in a breathtaking live show, watch the classic swedish death metal from Arch Enemy with the old vocalist Angela Gossow from Germany. Best track to get into it:
    Arch Enemy (Angela Gossow) - Nemesis. 2008. (Japan)
    And you may be surprised how much energy comes out of these people after the main set is already played! Awesome concert, awesome music, awesome crowd!
    And if you want to see the bleeding edge of modern metalcore, female singing with the beautiful and the extreme in a really fresh and skillful piece of art, you should for sure listen to Courtney LaPlante in the Band "Spiritbox" I can full-heartedly recommend the track "Rule of Nines". Assume that she does it live in one studiotake if she wants, just like Tatiana, but really want to see the video. Because all their videos are pieces of art. And not one bad track at all.
    (Same for Jinjer, btw.. Pick any official video of them and go crazy about quality and art.)
    You might think i am exaggerating. Well - judge by yourself. I am not easy to impress when it comes to music.

      And to not forget there are male singers that make the same switch for aesthetical and artistic reason, esp. in newer time, I want to also recommend any of the two video releases of Whitechapel from their last (concept) album, that reflect a very personal story of the singer, who's mother struggled with shizophrenia and died when he was a child. Hard stuff (deathgrind / metalcore) but with beautifully implemented clean sections that have somehow even Tool-like qualities. Look out for "Hickory Creek" and "When a demon defiles a witch". After many years the singer tried clean singing, and it turns out really beautiful. Of course with great lyrics as well. Tatiana and Courtney are also great lyricists. as you may easily acknowledge when diving into these bands. Try it out.

      @@maggiereneemusic Oh, it is easy to support people with recommendations that are willing to come out of their comfort zone to check out genres they never got into before.
      For the love of music. :-)

    I think you would like Maria Brink. Specifically her song “Fighter”. She is a metal front woman of In This Moment, but this song is more lyrical, less screamy.
    Also, for a real turn of cheek (musically) check out “Woman Song”, by The HU, a Mongolian metal band, the one featuring Lzzy Hale, of Halestorm.

      I love Maria as well but, no offense intended, nothing to do with Tatiana's false cords vocals... it's something different. She's got a unique technique, and I think there is no other singer in the galaxy that can do what Tatiana does at that level... Yes, you have Courtney from Spiritbox, and Alyssa from Arch Enemy, and some more... but none of them have that low growls Tatiana is able to do. Don't get me wrong. I love "In this moment" but nothing to do with this.

      @ I'm in the same boat. I feel like there is 0% overlap between the two. But I still love Maria Brink and ITM, and The Fighter is an incredibly beautiful song - the comments section is hard to read, but a testament to how much their music means to a lot of people.

      @ check out a band called Vintersea, if you don't know about them already, then get back to me on the deep growls that only Tatiana can do.
      I love Jinjer, and I still listen to The Agonist from the Alissa era, and Spiritbox is awesome. Arch Enemy just doesn't do it for me.
      Avienne from Vintersea is a better vocalist than anyone mentioned here. The rest of the band members I think are also better and Vintersea has top notch composition.
      Lizzy hale and maria brink are trash.

    •  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@nicholasdoyle7715 I heard a couple of songs from vintersea... Maybe I didn't choose the right ones but I wasn't particulary impressed. I still think Tatiana still has the best vocal range. And I wouldn't call trash any kind of singer or band (ok... Reaggeton is), just different. Lzzy Hale and Maria Brink are just another ballpark

    • @nicholasdoyle7715
      @nicholasdoyle7715 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @ I would call trash trash. Brink is a sellout plain and simple, never cared for Hale, always sounds the same, like listening to any Godsmack or Mudvayne album on repeat.
      Like I said I love Jinjer, but Avienne from Vintersea shows more vocal range.
      Have you tried listening to the songs Crevasse, Crack of Light, Firey Tongue or Illuminated?

    with the vocal doubling effect tatiana vocal training is so tight that the track she has her vocals in a slightly different pitch so it gives a cool effect (also imagine being comfortable enough that you know you are gonna hit every que and on pitch you could be your own background singer) she is absolutely amazing
