  • If you love the Chicago Bears and their colorful history, then you're going to love this terrific two-minute video by NFL Films which chronicles the uniform color history of the Bears franchise from its founding in Decatur Illinois as the Decatur Staleys in 1920 to the modern era in magnificent New Soldier Field. Narrated by Scott Graham, one of the great voices of NFL Films, this video features three uniform history experts: Joe Horrigan who is VP Communications and Exhibits at the Pro Football Hall of Fame where he has worked for more than 35 years; Michael MacCambridge, author of "America's Game: The Epic Story of How Pro Football Captured A Nation" and many other books as well as editor of the massive "ESPN College Football Encyclopedia"; and Scott Sillcox, sports uniform historian.
If you are a huge Bears fan, you might be interested to know that the 12 pieces of original artwork used to create the Bears' poster -- the actual hand-painted watercolor paintings -- are available for sale at Heritage Sports Art www.HeritageSpo... . When you watch this NFL Films video, you will see 4 or 5 of the 12 actual painted uniforms -- and you can actually own that original artwork!

IKR I think they're still in the top 5 or at least 10 for total championships. I wanna say after GB but Patriots and Chiefs are making gap smaller. no homo.

one last thought on the Bears uniform colors The Blue is like a different blue then say the Broncos blue looks more purple and the cowboys blue looks more navy and the chargers blue looks more faded blue the Bears have like a blue only they can differentiate from all other NFL teams to me when I first saw them I thought they where blackish brownish color but now I realize they are actually like a midnight blue

I don’t understand something, there’s no blue in the current bears logo, so where did the blue come from?

It's a very dark navy; I used to watch them on black and white TV growing up and just assumed the unis were black.

Hi Ungar to the Max - Nice to see you back again with some comments. My answer would be that when the team started in 1920, the fledgling NFL teams didn't have logos - they only had colors. The logo(s) came long after the colors. So perhaps your question is - when and why did George Halas choose orange and blue as the team colors? I'm sure the answer is out there somewhere, but I don't know it off the top of my head. Maybe someone else can weigh in on this one.
      Thanks - Scott

I needed to remind myself why Halas chose orange and blue - here's what Wikipedia says:
"In 1922, Halas changed the team name from the Staleys to the Bears. The team moved into Wrigley Field, which was home to the Chicago Cubs baseball franchise. As with several early NFL franchises, the Bears derived their nickname from their city's baseball team (some directly, some indirectly - like the Bears, whose young are called "cubs"). Halas liked the bright orange-and-blue colors of his alma mater, the University of Illinois, and the Bears adopted those colors as their own, albeit in a darker shade of each."
      Thx Scott

This color or blue has always been a bit confusing to me...In the 1950's and 60's, if you watch any film of the Bears, the uniform colors, even close up, appear to be BLACK....The shade of blue must be so dark that it is hard to distinguish, but for years I thought it was a black jersey....With some orange, of course...If they actually WERE black, man, they would look menacing...I always liked their uniforms...

The uniforms were so close to black but I knew it wasn't black, if anything I thought it was a dark purple lol.

3089280288 I agree, their current logo looks identical to the Cinncinati Reds logo. They really should switch to the Bear Head logo or the bear claw

@@ungartothemax20166that style of C actually got it's start at u of chicago football. It was stolen from anyone who had a C in their towns name. But its history is cemented in Chicago football history regardless of where others went with the logo.

The Bear's "C" is not as symmetrical as the Cincinnati Red's "C".... there is a slight difference but you have to look closely
