That statement from Sowell was nonsense! Attacking a US President for speaking on matters with which he may have limited personal experience but definitely has responsibility as POTUS is absurd. This is the reason Presidents have advisors. For Sowell to make such a comment and/or suggest that US Presidents should only make public statements about matters on which they are subject matter experts speaks to Sowell's partiality and his conservative agenda.

I think attacking a politician for being good at "politics" i.e. pandering to a crowd is a bit odd.
I also think Sowell didn't seem to fully comprehend the context of what Obama said... Obama was talking about taxes being used to subsidize the oil industry not personal income tax which he was saying should, at the very least, not increase (I'll add, if not be lowered). In essence, wealthy corporations should be taxed and individuals should have some tax stability/relief.
Sowell interprets that as "when people keep their own money that's subsidizing them" = Not what Obama said. And, this begs the question(s) Whose money is corporate profit? What is fair for the employees that make a corporation profitable versus executives? The wage gap between corporate executives and the lowest level workers has become exponentially wider and that, plus inflation, is the reason for the disparity in the standard of living. Not tax. Sure! If 50% of the money poor people earn didn't go to Uncle Sam they could by more stuff but there needs to be a substantial wage increase in concert with moderate taxation. Obama's statement would not fix any problems but it sounds good... and Sowell didn't understand what Obama was saying.

@@alexanderk7422 Corporations don't pay taxes. Their customers do. Taxes are just overhead, a cost of doing business. The tax is passed on to the customers in the price of the product. Taxing corporations only increases the price of their products. The people being taxed are the very ones the pols supposedly want to favor. But the pols really don't care, because they only care about the votes of people who don't understand this.

If he decided to start his own business an education would likely give him an advantage.
I knew a man would repaired home heating and cooling systems. He was very, very good. Good enough to hire about 12 techs. He hired a women who claimed to know accounting, taxes and payroll.
She pretty much controlled the company's finances. Two years into her employment a letter came from the IRS stating back taxes and penalties were due.
When he tried to confront this woman she had blown town with about $200k plus the money she has been stealing since day one.
He stated he didn't need to know how to look at the books to see if he was making or losing money that's why he hired her so he didn't have to.
Has he taken the most basic small business classes at the community college he might have found out about the theft earlier.

@@dps6198 "Has he taken the most basic small business classes at the community college he might have found out about the theft earlier." Or, he could do some simple research and save money in the process. Not saying he shouldn't have been better prepared, but there is a huge misconception that college is the best source of information and learning, when it simply isn't for a lot of cases. Especially considering that, if you go to (public) school, chances are higher you will get roped into some redundant agenda by the teachers, whether you notice or not. Whereas if you have the opportunity to be self-taught, you have even more freedom looking for information and suitable teachers.
I have one question here. Did the woman have the documents proving she was qualified for her job?

Higher education isn't the answer. The answer is fixing lower education. I remember being appalled to learn that back in the 1800s an eighth grade education was as good as, if not better than, a high school education when I graduated. And nothing I've heard has indicated that a high school education has appreciated in value since I graduated. In fact it's depreciated since I graduated.

Thomas Malthus years and years ago noted that when the government interferes in industry, it is almost always to industry's detriment because that interference is not being driven by NEED and thus throwing supply and demand out of whack. For some time now the government has been paying to send as many people into college as possible, and the only people obviously enriched by this are the colleges. At no point has it ever been asked whether all these graduates were needed, whether people were studying studies that were needed, or even whether all the money was well-spent on people who graduated instead of just taking classes for years and wasting those years of their life and copious amounts of money. It was simply taken as a unproven premise that 'college is always good for everyone'. If they simply stepped away, a lot of the problems would fix themselves over time.

Kind of funny that he is a know it all. He must have been included in everything. How did he find out about Iran's secrets? Why is America going forward with all of these electric cars? Amazon is moving forward with a fleet of electric vehicles. I guess Sowell, the know it all, is against solar power. I find it funny that he did not talk about Reagan's contra debacle that Oliver North fell on the sword for. How about the trickle-down theory, didn't old Sowell know anything about that? Trump paid 750.00 in taxes, but I guess Sowell thinks that's just fine. Why didn't he criticize the affordable care act, his republican handlers vowed to do away with it, but somehow they didn't. I guess he thought that Obama giving the order to take out Bin Laden was something that sooner or later his republican heroes were going to do, even though they had plenty of chances to give that order, I mean how hard was it to find a 6'7" mountain man. Bush and Cheney brought the country to the brink of a depression that would have rivaled the great depression. President Obama came and cleaned up the mess that they left behind, and brought the country back from that disaster. Democrats have always had to clean up republicans' messes. America's Iran deal was signed by all major European countries. If it was so awful, why did they agree with it? I guess Sowell is smarter than everyone else, and the leaders of Europe are just a bunch of dummies that would do whatever old dumb Obama said. Hey, Sowell give us the solution for cold fusion, why waste your brilliance on republican talking points?

Absolutely. I used to support IT in a number of primary schools, and having just returned from a few years working in Antarctica, noticed how classrooms were full of Antarctic related stuff, penguins and so on. After listening to the teachers discuss about Antarctica, and other places around the world, I pointed out to a few that these places aren't just full of scientists .. i.e. kids/adults who studied hard and went to University etc. The Winterers, those of us who keep the place ticking over and so on, through the dark months, are all mostly tradesmen. I also mentioned that on my other travels working overseas, I saw plenty of Brit (and American) tradesman (Carpenters, Plumbers, Electrician, Mechanics), who had worked all over the planet, all left school with no higher education, but got themselves a trade, earn tons of money and travelled the world. Really annoys me where we are now, this culture whereby if you fail academically, you're done. It's an absolutely dreadful message!

My husband also didn’t go to college. He never cared what people thought of him. He’s 36 and making 120k a year now as a journeyman electrician. This wouldn’t be attainable with just any bachelors degree. I think the dumbest thing about college is that no one is educating the students what they’re investing in. My husband and I have no student loans. Students should not spend 60k in a history degree. You’re probably not going to make a good return on what you’re invested in. That’s why we have college students thinking communism is a solution. They can’t even afford to live in an apartment on their own.

Except when you actually want to go to college for something like mathematics or some other academic interest, and it's still prohibitively expensive compared to years past. Sowell completely misses the point, that higher education, regardless of who is going to colleges, is prohibitively expensive for EVERYONE, not just bozos who go to college thinking their sociology degree is going to get them a job at an investment firm or some nonsense. For those genuinely interested in academics, who aren't there to simply get a special piece of paper for companies to look at, it's STILL too expensive. This is regardless of how smart you are as well, since the actual amount of money you can save with scholarships is diminishing, and one shouldn't have to be a literal genius to go to the same college a rich but comparatively average or merely above average person does just because one is poor.

Believe it or not, almost everyone in a skilled trade needs a college level education.
Many years ago, when I worked for a manufacturing company, I was on a committee to develop a program for recruiting or training skilled trades workers. One thing we found, early on, the training for skilled trades was on the level of an associates degree in any trade we were interested in.
We had a skilled tradesman come in to install and set up for operation an air supply system for some of the machinery. He had a bachelors degree in mechanical engineering.
Every nurse I have encountered went to college to qualify.
I was talking to a fellow student, decades ago, quite a few decades ago, and he mentioned his job. The class we were in had nothing to do with his job, so I asked him why he was taking it, he was already in management.
He said he did not have a degree, and he needed one to move any higher. They didn't care what degree, just so you had a degree.
There is a whole lot of education that is college level, but not considered college education.

@@achinthmurali5207 To be clear, Indoctrination is defined as the teaching a person (or a group) to accept a set of beliefs uncritically. Adopting a position, or changing one's mind about a position one once held, is not necessarily the product of indoctrination. Sowell's written work, which is considerable, reflects Sowell's determination to back up his positions with evidence. They could have bad study habits or not the educational background or the mental abilities or the skills, the desire and the motivation for college. The thing is that college is not for everyone. Except it’s not true. Many schools have cut sports programs and public courts aren’t maintained. Some schools have never had good sports programs. And then there’s poverty and distance from schools and public courts.
Urbanization has moved many people so far away from each other and public spaces and even reduced the amount of public spaces that it’s unrealistic for many kids to use them because they can’t walk that far safely, and their parents can’t drive them due to working multiple jobs or not having the gas money.
And public transit isn’t safe or available in many areas.
I use to live just outside of a city in north west Texas. The only basketball courts were at schools. I lived 15 minutes away by car from the nearest school, which I attended. The walk most days of the year would be 80-90 degrees of dry heat in the afternoon, with no shade, just flat grass lands. Some kids that lived closer did walk home from school and would end up with heat stroke in the summer.
There’s also the danger of kidnapping or being hit by drivers as there’s no sidewalks or street lights.
Plus wild animals such as rattle snakes and coyotes.
It’s simply not true that everyone has the same opportunities in America or even in the same states, counties, or cities.
Can people make it out of poverty despite their unequal opportunities? Yes. Should they have to find work arounds and work 10X harder to do so? No.
So much of the US needs to change. No country is perfect and America is no exception. Providing safer, cheaper, more accessible communities, transit, and public spaces for everyone is important. From kids, adults, elderly, and the disabled, we need to do better.

Bunch of Obama haters. Thomas Sowell I believe is pro republican anti democrat and a Trump lover. He hates on Obama as if he was a bad Democrat and he would possibly support a good Democrat when it wouldn't matter who was the democratic president he would hate on , except for Trump, I think most Trump supporters would still love Trump if he ran Democrat policies and those same people would also still hate Obama if he was Republican. The reason why Republicans hate Obama so much is because he was a great Democrat. Why would they hate him so much if he were a bad Democrat? If Obama were such a bad president and failed his democratic duties as president then that should be good news for Republicans as opposed to a good Democratic president that fulfilled his democratic duties. And that is why Republicans hate Obama so much , not because he was a bad Democrat President but because he was a good Democrat president and did his job and did it well. Plus I think Thomas Sowell doesn't like black people. Plus Thomas Sowell is a failure to his country to sit there and portray himself so much better and not step up to do better. I guess he felt shit was good enough without...... and what was Donald Trump, "the greatest president of all time " whom most , or well pretty much all of his supporters consider to be, doing during Obama 2 term presidency..... apparently he had a successful game show he must have felt more important than leading the country at that time and didn't mind Obama "destroying" the country. Yep. So what happened in the UK was that everyone was encouraged to go to university. I feel that the real motivation for this was to reduce unemployment. However with the most expensive education in the world, it has created a huge student debt bubble. There aren't r enough graduate jobs for the graduates so they leave with a huge debt burden and spend time unemployed, looking for a job in their field until they give up a do a job they could have done without going to university. Because focus was taken away from trades, there is a shortage of trades people, so builders, electricians, mechanics and carpenters usually earn more than graduates. Indeed if I look at the people from school who are now wealthy. None of them have degrees, not a single one.
