The only issue is that a kalam could be sold as if it's legit for $2k, but it's really a self made problem. Scalpers charging $2k for a $500 keyboard don't deserve respect, neither do people buying them enabling this scalper behavior. Barely anyone who wants a tgr, singa, keycult etc. board can get them for non-scalper prices, it's near impossible, this is because everyone wants one to resell. If you couldn't resell a jane or keycult or unikorn for 4x what you paid, there would be much less demand. So all of this is a problem they made for themselves and I have 0 issues buying a kalam. I'm not enabling a scalper and never winning a raffle, so it's no loss to anyone.

Prices have come down quite a bit from the time I made this video and also from the COVID dark days. There are still weirdly hyped boards like Kohaku of course, but the thing about Kalam is, they don't just pirate boards that are "rare", if you so call these boards. They only pirate the popular, trendy and high in demand ones that give the best ROI i.e. money grabbing just like scalpers. You don't see Kalam Geist or Kalam Werk One or Kalam Iron165 right? Kalam, as much as people are putting the brand to be THE heroic face of pulling prices down, isn't all that glamourous a brand when you think about it. They are in it for the money too. Sure, it may have started off as that but, the days of needing to pirate is long gone.

@@benfromsg Definitely, I get where you're coming from. These days the entry level boards are so high quality, there's no need to spend that type of money. Even "mid level" boards like graystudio, ai03, etc. offerings are no worse in quality or design and have more features than a keycult or tgr's outdated designs. We've even seen tgr make widely available boards like tomo and jane me that no ones trying to flip. It's only their exclusive limited run raffle boards that everyone obsesses over and flips for 5x. Tgr is clearly capable of making unikorns or kohakus widely available but chooses not to, as does keycult as a business move.
I view this as fake designer clothes or fake rolex watches. I don't think highly of people who make them. I think they're shady. But, if I really, really like a design, like I love the hk edition unikorn, I'd rather pay 350 for a clone than 4.5k for the real thing off a flipper who paid 550. If I could buy it for retail price from singa I would, but she doesn't want to offer it, so it's her loss. I really love the hk unikorn and don't feel any guilt buying a clone, I also have a collection of other boards I bought from legit vendors but I would like to add it to my collection.
I also feel better buying a clone of keycult than the real thing after interacting with their elitst, gatekeeper nerd community that ganged up and insulted and muted me on their disc for asking why raffles haven't been announced publicly for the last 2 years. They also ganged up and attacked mechmerlin, one of the guys responsible for making qmk, for pointing out a flaw in qc in his keycult. Really gross community kc runs.

@@benfromsg Bruh why does youtube auto delete soo many comments. I wrote up a whole reply and it auto deleted it. But if it doesn't delete this too, yeah I get what you mean. There are tons of boards out there that are just as good, so it's not like you NEED to pay those prices to get a good board. Nor do I look at kalam like some robin hood. I view him in the same way you view clones of designer clothes or watches. It is what it is. If you want to sell rare expensive luxury items that are relatively easy to make and copy, there are going to be copies. I have a dozen other boards, but I really love the hk edition unikorn, and they go for 4.5k on aftermarket. I'm not paying that. So it's either a clone or nothing at all, so I bought a clone and feel no guilt.
I also have other boards but this is one I'd like to add to my collection.
If singa wanted to make unikorns and kohakus widely available, she could. The demand is there and vendors are big enough to comfortably do shipping logistics for large volume orders. She has already done large group buys with the tomo and jane me, and no one flips those. In the early days it was hard to do logistics for large volume orders, but at this point with this demand, it's nothing more than a business move. If I could buy a unikorn from singa and not from scalpers, I would. But I can't, she doesn't want to, so it's her loss.

Also to add to this, I don't support key cult in any way. Their community is some of the most toxic and elitist gatekeepers of any keyboard sub-community. In their minds, they spend more money = they are better than you. I asked why a raffle hasn't been publicly announced in their discord in over 2 years, they gas lit me trying to say they actually do publicly announce it, they don't, they private message random people active on their discord and let their friends and family know so they can flip them. I didn't say any of that that I found that out later, I just asked why they haven't announced in a while, they grouped up and insulted me personally, then a mod muted me and also insulted me for asking.
Not to mention they grouped up and insulted and threatened mechmerlin, one of the main guys responsible for developing qmk, for so much as pointing out some small qc issues with his keycult board he bought. They're truly the worst. If I really wanted a keycult I'd buy a clone even if the real thing was cheaper, I'd never support them.

edit - Oh and their qc fails lately, that whole thing. Ontop of bad qc, terrible communication which shows disrespect towards their customers who paid 2-3k for their board which they sell by raffle for 500 in the first place. Which you will never know when a raffle is unless you're friends with a higher up in kc. Gross brand. They deserve to be undercut by clones which are ironically higher quality.

@@benfromsg While it's probably true that there are some unsuspecting folks out there spending $500 for a V2 CE and thinking they got the deal of the century, the vast majority of Kalam purchasers are the people in the Kalam Discord server asking him to make clones of other popular boards, and feeling good about it. It's shat people asking a talented designer to do shat things.

They should clone some keyboards with split spacebars so I can finally get one dammit
I love Keebio, but I'm really
    Really
Really getting tired of being restricted to one PCB in this beautiful world of boards
I just want a 1.25/2.25/2.75u split spacebar someone help plz ;(
(Epomaker maybe makes one a couple? Don't know if their split spacebar module is reversible). Otherwise only options are Keebio Sinc/Quefrency (I need F-row, so Sinc only) & upcoming Theseus75

@@benfromsg These all are Alice/Arisu keyboards I think he wants a regular 75 with split spacebar. There are a few keebs but split spacebar is very rare unfortunately. I agree split spacebar should be easily available it's so functional. Once I used Alice keyboard and split keyboard I can't go back to regular 6.25/7u spacebar. As for now my daily driver keyboard is QK60 HHKB version with split spacebar it's wonderful 👌

@@Ukiya44 I didn't know the QK60 could do split spacebar. Is that a stock option? I haven't heard about any of the other QK boards having a split spacebar either, but that would be really cool

@@benfromsg as the other comment said, I was referring to a traditional staggered layout, but I still appreciate the recommendations. Alice layouts are ok, but I have a different issue with them, which is that they frequently omit modifiers. I know it's part of the design, but I'd like at least one that had them. Also, these recommendations are all 2.25/1.25/2.75u splits. I'm looking for a 1.25/2.25/2.75u split. Think I might try one of the Zoom's, but even those aren't the split layout I want. Hilariously, Epomaker's split module is the order I want, but completely reversed, and they don't indicate anywhere that it can be flipped around the other way, although I guess I could easily contact support and find out

@@benfromsg I don't think singa and tgr intended for their boards to have such a high resell price, but the scarcity of the boards in combination with how many people want them caused the price to be so artificially high. Of course the boards aren't really worth 1-2k+ USD but that's what they sell for.
