    I think more and more people are just buying where they shop and simply don't know if they are clones or not. There is a set I've been wanting and while you can't get that particular set at a large US online retailer you can find very close copies of it. If I didn't know the actual name and had really been paying attention I would have purchased on of those because the "look" was so close. Sadly I believe this will only get worse as more and more people get interested in the hobby. Great video and very good points!

      Yes, it's especially hard for newcomers who don't know the exact names of things. They just see "oh nice colors and themes" and go straight to buy them. I've seen one or two instances in person but well, it's that guy's business so, who am I to say what he should or shouldn't sell?

    Some keyboards like keycult and unikorn that are raffle based but have poorly implemented systems make me consider Kalam. I lost 5 singakbd raffles (which I understand and don’t mind) but then the same assholes in my country can win 3 in a row and resell all of them for 2k sgd each. Why are they not banned from future rounds of sales after winning one?

      Sorry to burst your bubble but those scalpers usually have bot accounts or friends and families that help them bypass such things. You are basically going up against 10 people, so to speak. Sorry allow me to rephrase myself in a more respectful way. You have every right to condemn clones like Kalam because yes they did rip off designers. However I don’t understand the hostility such as calling the Kalam Jane “trash” when it’s machining quality is actually top tier compared to even original boards. The Kalam keycult has better QC than keycult nowadays hence why people are flocking towards this clone market. The raffle system is ok but the fact that people can win multiple boards and have bot accounts etc incentivises the average consumer to consider clones instead

    I like your take, however I would say I am one if the exceptions when you say that people who grab clones wont be on the hobby for long. I own several other mid-high end boards I just have the Kalam Jane V2 CE as a clone. This board passes the logic of “saving up for it”, paying several thousand for a keyboard is beyond reason for me but I love everything about the CE so I got a clone. Im pretty humble and won’t claim I have real Jane when people ask and I don’t go and show it off either. I think people can take whatever route they want in this hobby, and the people who want to get clones are totally fine to do so, they just should be humble about it.

    This is true but unfortunately, majority of the people who buy and support the clones are people who aren’t even in the hobby and just wants a new keycap set for their old keyboard. Before entering the hobby, my girl bought me a keycap set from shopee and both of us didn’t even know that it was a clone of gmk civilizations. My friends also got keycaps that they thought look cool and bought it off amazon and shopee without knowing it is a clone. I think these clone keycaps strive not because people buying it are deliberately choosing to support clones instead of the original thing, but them being oblivious about these facts of keeb hobby. At the end of the day, it all boils down to availability and pricing and they have the audience for it.. people who are not in the hobby who just wants to buy cool looking keycaps.
    I’ve seen this time and time before entering the hobby, just to realize we all been buying clones without knowing it. The truth is, there’s a huge market for clones and majority of them are your average joes not giving a damn about keyboards and just wants a minor upgrade or change of theme in their set up.. and we can’t do anything about it. Clone market might outlive the hobby itself at this point lol.

      I could not say it better. When I came into the hobby, I didn’t even know what’s what. I don't think buying an OG Jane v2 as 3-4k usd is wise choice at all. The OG got hyped up buy the earlier comer trying to hype the value of the board up but it have a lot flaws in design and finishing. Since a Kalam Jane on the market around 500-600 and the typing and acoustic almost identical, not even say the finishing is way better. Im not encouraging people buying Kalam but there are problems within this hobby to make Kalam Jane become successful. Clone keycaps have quality issue with legend sharpness or printing issue but Kalam is another case. A clone from already finished and discontinued product with almost same quality is good for newcomer and better in general for the hobby. If the clone meant to be decreasing on sale of the existing product, that another story.

    • @benfromsg
      @benfromsg  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't think it's wise either but at this point in time, an OG Jane v2 will be a collector's item, even more so 10 years later (not many boards these days use a micro usb port gawd). No one can set a price for it by then.
      Plus, it's a little hypocritical to support Kalam since he only copies hyped boards right? What Kalam and the like is doing now is to clone KCs, TGRs, Unikorn (maybe kohaku soon) and nothing really obscure. What about someone who wants a cheaper vega or a cheaper thera or cheaper class 65/80? Those are discontinued, good boards too and aren't coming back anytime soon but I don't see him copying those less popular boards eh? No one's gonna copy an unknown brand, cloners are just gonna clone the famous ones for profit.
      If Kalam has a quarterly poll from his community to decide what keyboard he should clone next, maybe there's a case for cloning. Like how Magic Lantern unlocks cinematic features for older Canon cameras. It doesn't hurt Canon and it only benefits older users of the camera. Until then, any kind of cloning will just be labelled as immoral and opportunistic. It really boils down to morals at the end of the day.

      @@twofu967 as what I experienced by myself and approvement from many hobbyist, Kalam Jane and Jane ME sound literally the same and Kalam Jane a bit better. It have internal brass weight for pulling down some frequency of the high pit noise from the top mount and the switches. Some new boards in 2023 and maybe 2024 are cool but none of them fit with my taste at all due to foam or similarity of sound profile. This hobby is saturated compared to 4-5 years ago and people have to pack it with gimmicky features to catch new customer attention. If you say buying clone is killing this hobby so resellers and flippers are killing this hobby faster than clone boards.

    I'll still recommend most friends to just get clone sets , the difference is soo little nowadays, sadly not everyone can drop 100$ for an original keycap set
    And honestly, community wise, I do find the keyboard modding community sometimes a little toxic, since its now blending in with PCMR toxicity, so I prefer just building keyboards for pleasure and satisfaction, not for showing off

    • @benfromsg
      @benfromsg  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      Personally, I have issues with clones, I can't get over owning one, that's why I don't even look at them. I can't get over the moral aspect of it, less of the financial factor.
      I don't disagree with you if say, I am buying a clone set to use for myself, and I'm not showing nor influencing anyone to buy anything. But that's hardly the case right, if someone comes over to your office desk or home, and sees an interesting keyboard, then he/she will have to reveal at some point that they have no issues with piracy. The issue depends more on morality than anything cuz like I said, there are much cheaper pbt keysets that don't break the bank. If you can't shell out 80 or 90 bucks, then just save a month or two for it, it's not too difficult to save an extra 40 or so, over a cloned set that's like 30 or 40 usd from Taobao for it right? If 40 bucks is making you think twice about buying something.... there are more important things in life that needs that money. Keyboards are the last things to buy.

    • @ryanrocksize5
      @ryanrocksize5 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@benfromsg sadly when it comes to the overall market in Malaysia, it's flooded with practically 90% of the things readily available are clone keycaps, even from a physical shop and our major online shopping platforms, it's hard to justify the need for getting originals when the price hike is quite huge
      I can completely assume and be proven right if atleast 95% of the keyboard community here are using clone keycaps because of the ease of acquiring them and our salaries being not as high as individuals in the US region.... or SG region aswell
      Just to add:
      I know keycap cloning is morally wrong , but nowadays the quality is soo close , and clone keycaps quality are becoming more premium, eventually these companies will start to hire their own artists to work on new creations for a fraction of the price , cutting out a chunk of the market when artists slowly move away from new keycap creation due to lack of demand for "original" keycaps. Never forget the amount of buying power China has in making new art sets , especially since they're king for cheap labor.

    Why there's clone? Simple answer, that's the demand. Why clone is come to a way that may threatening the original's business? Thats really leave a lot of questions that they need solve it. I'm not born in silver spoon or high income individual then even worse, live in a country that has a really bad currency.
    But I still appreciate the quality, design, exclusivity and etc. But the only thing I cant really understand is why just a set of plastic injection moulded products so damn long to finish the production? Anyway to shorten or improve the lead time? Should keycaps business need to remodel in order to fit the social demand?
    What piss me off the most on these keycap GB is very bad in terms of control of the process. Simply change color code because color doesnt match the render, new color code totally make no sense and not matching the render image. Super long lead time, no one give a damn and even worse committed deadline that never been fulfilled.
    My GMK Norse suppose to delivered on Jan and end up postponed all the way to August. I have no goddamn idea where's the manufacturing standards. But anyway, I told myself never ever join any keycap GB. Just look for whatever GMK or other brands stock ready. Now slowly more enjoy getting PBTfans keycaps since they actually ABS, not PBT. and they always having extra in stocks.

    • @benfromsg
      @benfromsg  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't have all the answers but I do have some thoughts on what you said.
      1) clones only threaten the original's business because the hobby is small. if a group of 100 has 50 clone buyers that makes 50% compared to 50 out of 1000. Unless the hobby grows to a sizable number, the percentage of clones will remain huge. If you take a look at the recent debacle, demand is plummeting and alot of GMK sets are flooding the aftermarket. Some prices are even lower than pre-covid days. And as a result, the number of clone makers also start to dwindle (minus kalam of course, because of their reputation) since their profit margin is squeezed.
      2) Unfortunately, there aren't any easy fixes for reducing lead time. Manufacturers like GMK/SP/ePBT etc have a fixed number of machines to handle production and believe it or not, they aren't at the size of larger conglomerates to be able to invest in the unknown so GBs are run instead where people actually commit their money before production starts. Imagine if GMK themselves made 10000 sets of GMK Xylophone (a made up keyset name) but only 100 are sold, their loss there is huge. Compared to say 5000 GB orders are collected even before production starts.
      3) In terms of QC, it takes time and GMK only make alterations if the creator is not satisfied e.g. GMK Tako where the gold accent was so hard to get right. If the creators didn't have the decency to color check *cough* GMK navy *cough* against their renders, then it makes them look bad, not the manufacturer.
      4) Would you believe it if I told you that PBT should cost more expensive than ABS? Based on raw material cost and production difficulty, PBT is heaps harder to get right. But because ABS is so soft inherently, it's much easier to mix and create a wider spectrum of colors. The availability of different colors drives demand and feeds back into their pricing.
      Alot of these issues will be mitigated if the hobby is as large as luxury watches/cars/handbags. It helps that the demand is coming down now since we are almost back to normalcy, not to mention the accompanying economic downturn. So there is a larger in-stock supply of GMK sets. And keep in mind, we are only discussing GMK keysets here. These issues are NOT shared by keyboard case makers. Moreover like I said in the video, if you are okay with PBT stuff, what's the high prices of GMK to you?
      Thanks for the comment though! I like these kinds of discussions with the few audience that leave them. You are hard to come by! Appreciate you!
