One thing I would like more people to understand is that drawing realistically and drawing stylised/cartoonish are two very different skills. Someone who is good at realism and can't draw a comic would still be a good artist. Similarly I think mangakas shouldn't have to draw realistically or painterly to be conisdered great artists

    • @jessicalee9224

Only Tite Kubo comes close, able to make creative and vibrant characters in a more serious style, but Oda's style that is more cartoonish actually allows for MORE creativity. You never really realize how much they've changed until you look back at a picture or, in this case, a volume from 5, 10, even 20 years ago. Ever since I've started watching/reading One Piece, it's like the story has been with me throughout all those years. This may sound very cheesy, but Oda's become a huge inspiration to me as an upcoming writer. Not in a sense of improving my drawing skills, but just to improve on my writing in general. It's funny looking back on 17 years worth of practice and seeing just how terrible many of my stories turned out, and it's because of people like Oda that I've taken steps to improve on my own works. I doubt any of my books will become as popular as Harry Potter or The Lord of the Rings, or even the Percy Jackson series. But in all honesty, that doesn't matter to me. Giving others the opportunity to enter the worlds I've created and experience the adventures the characters go through is more than enough. In the end, I want to provide an out for those who may be going through tough times, or just want to shut off their brain and enjoy a fantastical tale.

If there's one thing about One Piece that I find tends to be pretty underappreciated is the art.
One Piece's style and exaggeration has been such a massive influence on my own art up until now that it kind of saddens me when all I've heard from other people online about it's art are negatives and dislike.
I could just be surrounded by specific people who don't find One Piece to be that appealing. And it's also not to say that it's objectively the best artstyle in any manga ever.
I just wish to see more love for One Piece's art due to how influential it was to me and how much negativity I see when it comes to the style. Or anything about One Piece for that matter... I should probably surround myself with more people who actually like One Piece...

    • @paijwa
      @paijwa 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

People just haven't spent time learning art and don't see when something is technically good or not, they see the detail and style, not the fundamental skill. One Piece has a more simplistic and different artstyle than your usual manga, so people will use that to suggest the art is bad, when it in reality is far from it from a technical standpoint.
Like, people will say Kingdom has better art because it's a lot more detailed, but it's just strictly worse if you look at it based on perspective, proportions, composition, clarity, and form especially. If anyone thinks Kingdom is better drawn they're smoking crack is what I'm saying.
Now if we're talking about Vagabond and the later part of Berserk, it's pretty safe to say that the art is much better from a technical standpoint, they have a lot of detail, but the detail is on top of very good fundamentals. Anatomy and proportions look correct, perspective is better, values make more sense and etc. People just have no clue.

I feel you bro. Tbh i haven't been into one piece for as long as many people here, but it has quickly become kind of my dream artstyle. All the bold designs and super exaggerated expressions are something i always wanted to incorporate more in my drawings, and One piece is the perfect example. Seeing people deem it as "ugly art" makes me very angry and sad, cuz not only it ignores all the love and skill put into it, it's kinda like saying the kind of art i aspire to make is bad too :(
Ofc i won't (and can't) copy it, and I've already accepted i can't make stories and characters as great as Oda's, but I wish more people would stop saying simple/different = bad and appreciate it more.

6:46 Saying that early One Piece was paper animated or cell-animated is a common misconception. I've seen some behind-the-scenes stuff. And yes, even in 1999, and 2000, they were drawing digitally. They had these bulky, pressure-touch pads that reeked of Windows XP, but they did it. Once you realize this, it becomes extremely noticeable that old One Piece was not cell animated. There's no film shake, no film grain, no shadow underneath a character's cell. (There's sometimes interlacing or rainbow effects, but that's a product of CRT TVs, not cell animation.) The One Piece: Special Edition remasters are essentially really well-made upscales. There's no 16mm to do a new transfer with.
The only thing in One Piece that's hand-drawn is the backgrounds. But from what I can tell, that's still being done today.
The first few One Piece films were cell animated, as mentioned. But not the series itself.

Oda deserves all the fame and praise he gets. I wish he never had to work again but at the same time no one else could bring us what we've all fallen in love with. He is definitely one of the great legends of history and will not be forgotten, much like our historical shakespears, platos, and so on. I somehow love the early One Piece art the most. There's something about it that makes it very special to me, as the style amazed me when i watched it for the first time. Same goes for Manga, i simply love the rubber-like look of characters, with hands and feet being so big compared to arms and legs. Maybe it has to do with my love of 90's Anime. I also noticed a trend that many late 90's shounen used somewhat cartoony look. Trigun, Jing the King of Bandits, Rave Master, Shaman King, early Naruto and One Piece, they all share some similarity with there being some militaristic-looking armor, some cowboy western feel, and characters looking very exagerrated and zany. I can also mention anime like CyberTeam in Akihabara, Saber Marionette J, Space Pirate Mito... There's something zany about late 90's anime that makes me love it a lot ^_^

Could have mentioned Nobuhiro Watsuki in terms of inspirations since Oda worked as his assistant. Shaman King's Hiroyuki Takei also worked alongside Oda as Watsuki's assistant. He has some incredible detail and very accurate anatomy that you can often see maybe not in the stray alley cat or dog in the background, but often the monkey, giraffe, bird, whale, or lion on the cover page.

Am I the only one who questions the change of Luffy's head but can't put a finger on what it is? From what I can tell (at least in the anime) his eyebrows are missing the majority of time and are replaced by the outline of them through shadows, his face is rounder, and his hair doesn't follow the same formula as in the past. His appearance is supposed to be leaning towards a Brazilian, which is more apparent in how he first looked compared to his future appearance. Idk, I'm not sure if I have a problem with it now, but I liked it better before.

One thing about Oda… it takes a great artist who understands reality and form, to twist it so easily and have it be attractive. It’s harder to make a great caricature than it is to make a realistic drawing. Knowing what you can push, how far, what you want the viewer to feel… etc. those take a keen eye and skilled hand.
People think of exaggerated art as somehow lesser or easier, but it’s absolutely a separate skill and one that requires a whole basis of knowledge in traditional art. Kinda like people saying a Vet isn’t a real doctor… they have to learn all of the same stuff about how a body works, how to fix it, medications, surgery… etc.. and then they need to learn even more to adapt it to multiple species… human doctors only need to know how to fix one type of hairless ape, but vets need to know how to set a broken leg on a dog, accurately medicate a massive horse, perform surgery on a snake and diagnose cancer in a birb!
Caricature and exaggerated art is the same thing… you need to understand the body, anatomy, and proper traditional art so you can twist it and morph it so it makes sense! When we see Luffy all stretched out, fighting a huge character with bizarre proportions at some weird angle… it looks and feels right. We think… “oh damn! Cool! Kick his ass Luffy!” but we don’t think about how perspective and angles with a normal human form is hard enough but keeping the odd proportions accurate and recognizable at odd perspectives is just crazy difficult! Oda doesn’t hold back with the insane character designs either… so keeping them all accurate, on model, and instantly readable during all kinds of fights and scenes is a damn miracle!

I wouldn't say the art (simply) got better... Oda was actually always a good draftsman. Some mangaka start with a low level (Beelzebub comes to mind).
Oda was always good. Look at how he drew hands in the first few volumes. He already had a strong grasp of anatomy and perspective. The style evolved that's for sure. He became faster andmore efficient and was able to put more details before the deadline.
There are things I like more in his earlier art (the more cartoony aspects) and things I love more now.
Also, most artists actually can draw realistic pieces if they want too. Real life drawing is a key asect to improving as an artist.
To be able to draw Luffy and Co, Oda first learnt how to draw realistic people.

The story is still what keeps this manga number one, but the art have declined over the years as the popularity and longevity of this series became a crutch for one person to really consistently spew out weekly. I honestly feel a little upset when I hear people compare One Piece to Naruto. There is not a single aspect of Naruto that is in the same weight class as One Piece. Quality is more important than quantity, sure, but One Piece has only ever *improved* in quality, whereas Naruto was good for around 11 volumes before becoming completely unreadable.
Oda is increadibly talented, and not just with the artwork. He's been kicking around ideas in his head for literally his entire life that make in into his masterpiece in one form or another... and *all* with a quality story surrounding those ideas that never stops evolving. The man is practically a machine of perpetual energy, and I hope his health holds up.
I want Oda to have a long life making what he wants to make. The death of Miura really puts a highlight on how overworked these people are. Miura wrote the greatest story of *all* time, and even when he slowed down production to a trickle, it still wasn't enough, and it literally consumed his life. I was always an advocate for how I'd rather he slowly make his vision come to fruition properly and ethically rather than it be rushed and unhealthy for him, but it seems the long hours of overworking for so many years had accumulated too much damage for it to matter much anymore. He was only 54, don't forget.
All that is to say, people, don't get upset if Oda needs more time off as he ages. He needs "me" time, and he's got a family who would love to see him more often, too. His health comes before One Piece, because his health enables One Piece to exist at all.

As much flaws as Naruto has, come on now, it didn't become unreadable after 11 volumes. I agree that it's not in the same ballpark as One Piece but still, Naruto had great peaks but was let down by plot holes and poor writing.

Naruto and Neji's fight is literally 100% about how people are only capable of being the best if they're genetically born that way. Naruto says believes otherwise... and then the series goes on to undermine everything by revealing that Naruto has the strongest possible bloodline powers in the setting on top of the convenient plot powers that make him as powerful as the plot needs him to be for him to win with no effort. Also Neji completely annihilated Naruto, Naruto won by cheating with fox magic, and everyone in the stands cheers on Naruto because he's "so skilled" and such... in a fight that he only won because he allowed himself to get possessed and mindlessly overpower his opponent... who then nonsensically gets KOed by a single punch. Lee versus Gaara was the best fight because it was the only fight that stood up for the series alleged theme without being hypocritical.

@@Poet482 Yes I know, I have seen that video before, that doesn't mean it became shit after this point. There were still great arcs after that but everything culminated in a poorly planned and poorly written final arc.

I was hoping for more comparisons between the artstyles of the different periods of one piece and an more in-depth look and analysis of said artstyle.

Having only caught a few episodes of One Piece on tv as a kid, the manga art does look impressive. Still gives me archive panic, it would be an investment to read.
Great video as usual, of course
