  • In this video I show you step by step how to change your serpentine belt in a 2003-2008 Toyota Corolla. This should be a similar process on the Toyota Matrix and other Year Corollas. People also refer to this belt as a drive belt or v belt or alternator belt. You will need a 10mm socket and socket wrench, a 10mm open ended wrench, a serpentine belt tool, and a new serpentine belt.

    Came to this video after wondering how the hell I install my serpentine belt in newly restored engine for a 2004 Toyota Corolla, LOL, the thing is I thought the belt would go under that timing flap protruding from the timing cover but then a quick look at your pro drawing of the belt was enough to makes me sight in relieve, LOL. My engine is still out of the bay, I wanted to put it in completed but the compressor still in the bay as AC is sealed, so belt would have to go in after engine is in. Got the same tool as you do here. Gearwrench rocks. Have one from Harbor freight too but can not compare the 2. Thanks for the video.

      If you are talking about that rectangular piece of metal, I was looking at that too. My belt snapped. So, I wasn't able to see how it was originally. Replacing the belt may be the easy part. When the belt snapped off, it cause a coolant leak somewhere. I need to locate where. I think it might have hit a hose in the front, but, it wasn't obvious where the leak was coming from.

    I hear a squeaky noise at low revs when the AC is on. Lasts like 1-2sec until the revs go over 1500. Not idling, only when pulling away. Think it might be the belt or a faulty pulley?

    Jack up the car, USE A JACK STAND, then do most of the work putting the belt on from underneath.
    I just got done with this job. I fought that stupid belt for 2 solid hours and got nowhere. Then I jacked my car up and I got the belt on in 7 minutes. I can't believe all these videos are telling people to do this from the top, when it's SO MUCH easier to do from below.
    I get that a lot of people won't have a jack and stand to do this, but it's almost worth it to go out and buy them just for this job. I would have given up if I hadn't tried it this way.

    Wow, talk about making a simple repair difficult. You don't need to disconnect the battery, you don't even need to remove the plastic trim, and you really don't need to buy a special tool for the tensioner. All you need to have is a 19mm socket and a breaker bar. That's it. With that one tool you can do this repair in less than 10 minutes.

    I just replaced my 2005 Corolla serpentine belt today. Advice: Use the VIN number to get the correct belt. The guy at the parts store went off the normal information of Year and Model, gave me a belt that was slightly too long. After wrestling to get get the new belt on with its prepackaged tight bends, finally getting around and on all the pulleys, I discovered the belt tensioner was not going to tighten it properly. So disappointing! Thus another trip back to the store. This time I gave the VIN number and Hello Kiddos, this belt was the right belt. Why didn’t this guy show the difficulty getting the belt on? Because he knows the new belt doesn’t go back on as easily as the old one came off as! That’s why! BTW, the old and original serpentine belt had 176K miles on it! A wing and Prayer! Wings and Prayers!

    I was driving my car the other day and I got a battery light on the desh. I figured it was the heat of the day getting to the battery or the alternator. Eventually the motors started chugging and I had to pull off on the freeway. After I got home with a tow, and pop the hood, I saw that my serpentine belt was completely obliterated/gone/strings. I guess I had been driving with no belt for a while and just battery power was firing the spark plugs. What's the worst that could happen. I'm going to replace the belt today sept 14, 2023. Crappy few years it has been :[

    Todd, yr recommended tools, it seems it does not work on our 2005 Corolla, because the socket with 19 blot could not fit into the belt screw! It looks its have a side-long- metal box over there and the room is too small for the wrench to put into. Can you tell us how to go further?

    • @neillarsen6037

      @@neillarsen6037 I'm planning on working on this tomorrow. On a 2007 Corolla S. I agree that it looked like there wasn't enough room for a socket. It looked like a wrench would be needed instead.

    • @idmhead0160
      @idmhead0160 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@neillarsen6037 Did you figure it out? I found out there is a separate bolt shaped piece of metal on the tensioner arm itself. That one is 19mm. This is separate from the bolt that attaches the tensioner itself to the engine, which appears to be 17mm. That one is too close to the side of the engine compartment to use a socket on. The one that you're supposed to use has enough room. It's not really a real bolt. It's a piece of metal that is part of the tension that is shaped like a bolt.

    The plástic cover over.valves needs to be removed to avoid breaking it abdt to allow better work space. The belt tensioner can be resolve with a long breaker bar. The battery + terminal needs to be removed to avoid engine start while someone is working up front. Safety always😊😊

    • @hanknmosul
      @hanknmosul 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don't think so. That bolt is the tensioner pivot bolt, and as you said, it sits right below the tensioner bolt. The tensioner bolt is a little harder to see because it sits back a little further and above the pivot bolt. The pivot bolt (which you don't want to use) sticks out furthest and "looks like" the one you want, but it isn't. Look hard above that pivot bolt, and you will spy the real 19mm bolt that you want. I think the pivot bolt is a 17mm.
