“Kindness and generosity” as the most important human qualities coming from a Harvard Professor of Finance. Boy! That gives me hope. I feel and so appreciate the deep wisdom and spirituality of Mr. Desai’s Indian heritage shining through. Thank you gentlemen ~

It always amazes me and fills my heart with pride when I see Indian people or people of Indian origin do well abroad and really make a name for themselves. Such a big moment for our Country when we look at such distinguished and accomplished people embossing our name on the world stage.

20 years in financial services tells me the Harvard professor knows what he's talking about. :-). It's easy to get started. Keep a part of everything you earn and invest it so it grows (Mihir mentioned index funds) and/or pays you money (Mihir mentioned treasuries). Make sure you are contributing to any company plan, at least enough to get the match. Learn as you go.
Three books to check out in addition to The Wisdom of Finance
Rich Dad, Poor Dad -mentioned in the show
    The Richest Man in Babylon
    The Millionaire Next Door
Way to expand the guest list Lewis.

how would one exactly invest in an index fund or purchase a bond? I know what they are, but don't know how to execute a transaction! appreciate your recommendations!

    • @mikeforseth
      @mikeforseth 7 ปีที่แล้ว +8

You will need an account to do the transaction in. Research more about index funds so that you know which fund(s) you want to invest in, Then you could open an online brokerage account or an account with a mutual fund family. This can normally be done in a few minutes online. You deposit funds to the account and then you can make a trade to purchase the investments you choose. Depending on the account and investments you can automate the deposit of additional funds and the purchase of additional shares. When you make regular purchases of an investment, you take advantage of something called dollar cost averaging. I'm sure you tiube can teach you all about that. Best of luck,

Great takeaways from this inspiring conversation; (1) While we are not equally talented/gifted, it is our duty (not an option) to make the most of what you have given. (2) Don't stigmatise failure, accept that it happens and start on a clean slate. (3) The power of Generosity and kindness are generally underestimated in life. (4) Your biggest leverage is your reputation.

I follow closely everything that is happening at Harvard Business School and really appreciate his interview , very powerful. Thanks Lewis ! Everything he said is right , I have young children and absolutely teach them this mindset if finance. It’s interesting because I also had a grandfather from Italy that kept a handwritten ledger as did his wife and my great aunt. My grandfather also taught me from an early age to look back in history and glean from history principles of finance and life. I also really appreciate how he blends a variety of stories, history and the Bible and convert to finance and leveraging resources ! Yes the story of the parables , exactly! I always say it to my clients and my kids how can we turn $1 in to $10 aka , talents , resources , gifts and so on. Wonderful interview !

*Let me share a few things I learned from these 2 bro's and made notes of:*
    1. *You don't know who is struggling with what, and what they're good at. Don't push too hard. People are incredible in different ways and you don't know, and you shouldn't pretend to know.* Filmpje
    People remember stories!
Stories help people tell the world.
    *Facts tell, stories tell*
    2. Reputation gives you the right to do things you have no right to do (good reputation).
    3. What does it mean to be smart? ATTITUDE & work ethic. Hard workers who are hungry & smart. That is really powerful

On the story of the talent he mentioned, the second was given 2 talents not 3 and that story do not only symbolises finance and gifts; it is also a foreshadow of what Heaven and Hell looks like, when you read it 'meditatively'.

12:00 Save more and compromise today for a better future/retirement - no one does this for a reason. No one wants to go sky diving at age 60. I think at that age, those who have amassed wealth by foregoing pleasure in their youth regret more than those who lived their best years with unoptimised retirement plans.
